@ it’s no problem man. My favorite video you have done on the DKC series is the “Beautiful Loneliness” video. For many years I tried to explain that feeling the game gives me and that hits the nail on the head. The isolated atmosphere you feel in the rainy jungle levels and the snow levels on the mountain. It truly feels you are there with Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong living the adventure through their eyes.
None of the donkey kong games beats Diddy's Quest. the levels in that game is absolutely phenomenal. Some of those levels where you were half under water, half over water, was mindblowing to me back then. And just the level creativity has not been reached since, not even in tropical freeze. but I agree.. It's nice to have them all on one console.. That is up until nintendo releases a new console, and shuts down the old store, to make room for the new store, so we can buy it all again for the 7th time 😖
Donkey Kong is clearly a key brand for Nintendo moving forward. Not only featuring in the 2023 Mario Movie, but also being the theme around the first expansion for Nintendo world is based.
I'm excited to play the 3ds levels for the first time and it just feels good to have this game physically on switch. Hopefully we get a new game soon too.
I'm excited for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, too! Nice to see someone else feeling the same. I think the game is getting a bit of a raw deal from some folks, so let me throw in my two cents. First, this isn't just some lazy port, y'know? The devs have really put in the work to make this the ultimate version of Returns. They've brought over the 3DS levels and remade them to fit with the Wii levels (they didn’t just plop them in). That's no small feat. Plus, they've given the whole game a visual glow-up with new lighting and textures. It's not just a fresh coat of paint, it's a real step up. Sure, there's been some talk about the $60 price tag, especially when you compare it to something like Metroid Prime Remastered. But let's give credit where it's due. They could've just ported the Nvidia Shield version (which is literally the Wii game in HD) and called it a day, but instead, they've gone the extra mile to make this version truly definitive. I get it if you're bummed we're not getting a brand new DK game. It's been ages since Tropical Freeze. But I think it's clear that Nintendo hasn't forgotten about our favorite tie-wearing ape. Aside from a new game, they're clearly investing in the DK brand, and I'd bet my last banana that Returns HD isn't the only thing they've got in the works. DK's a big deal, after all. He might not be quite on Mario's level, but he's up there. Nintendo knows what they've got, and they're not about to let him gather dust. You don't build theme park expansions for IPs you're planning to ignore/leave to die. At the end of the day, I'm excited to replay Returns after all this time and I look forward to what's next.

I gave in and pre-ordered last night. I held out on Tropical Freeze for literal years because of the price tag and dearth of discount opportunities, but when I finally DID play it…I regretted that decision. It’s just outstanding. So I won’t make the same mistake twice.
Here's my theory: Kids are going to say that they want to play Donkey Kong after going to Universal soon. Having all five games on one console makes it easy on parents looking to buy the game. Soon after that, a brand new game will release. Since the next console will be (from what I understand) backwards compatible, the Switch versions of these game will still be valid for any casual gamers wishing to go back and play the previous entries. There's also something about Nintendo's stance on emulation and that they really can't get rid of it if anyone wants something more to think about.
My issue with this game, aside from being forced to use motion controls, is that I don't get to play as Diddy. It's the same issue I have with Tropical Freeze. I liked switching between characters and taking advantage of their skill sets. I despise having the second character act as a sentient backpack dependent upon inputting the correct button combination at precisely the right time. In my opinion, the ONLY redeeming factor to Returns AND Tropical Freeze are the sillhouette stages.
I never had a wii, so this will be a day one buy for me. Don't love the $60 price tag, but DK and mario platforming games are the reason I own a switch.

I eventually got it on 3DS one year during Black Friday but I never could beat it and my 3DS now needs a new battery. I plan to get this, maybe not exactly at launch but soon, and I agree with it being the definitive version. Next year I plan to replay all the DK country games. I also got new (used) DK bongos so I've been replaying Jungle Beat this past week as a primer for my 2025 goal.
This is like BDSP where if you have the game on the original hardware you're like, why do I need this? But if you DON'T, this game being remastered for the Switch is really good news
I think DK games should try to emulate that 90s cg pre-rendered feel, like what the fan-made DKC4 looks. The graphics for the retro studios games don't look bad, but they're not appealing to me.
Beginning of the year I was begging for this to happen, definitive edition is RIGHT. Now all the switch needs is 64 and Jungle Beat And let's be honest, Wiis are annoying to turn on
The motion control was the main reason that I didn't like to play wii games. The later part of this game was unplayable for me. Same reason why I really disliked Skyward Sword. Now I can finally play this and get to enjoy playing it.
I’m totally with you, I’m happy to see this game getting love from Nintendo. Twice in fact as it was remastered on 3DS and now on Switch as well and seeing this game in HD and having this on the console just like in Wii but you can play without motion controls and the 3DS levels are there is something I always wished the Wii version had. Regardless of some graphical problems and the game being priced at $60, I’m just excited to go back to my childhood after not playing this for about a decade for me now and it’s also amazing that we’re able to play all the DK Country games on Switch and this is the definitive version of DKC Returns.

Literally, any game that they bring to the Nintendo switch, they have to include a non motion control option for that title because of the Nintendo Switch Lite.

I feel the same way with remakes of great past games or remasters. I never get overly excited about them like I used to for older games because it's nothing new. It's the same game we've played just with a paint job etc. We're in the era of constant remakes and remasters and not enough new original games.

I have played Returns only through the 3ds as I missed the wii version. I did get it later in a store though used. Now without either version, my original plan was to reevaluate the tikis as enemies while playing it again since haters call the tikis boring or bland.

I really hope they give us a hybrid option between button and motion controls, with buttons for rolling and groundpounding and the like, and motion for the beat down segments (like at the very start of the game, or when you finish off a boss). Because man was that satisfying to do on the Wii.

it's shocking that the remaster made for this game is not as stunning as metroid prime remastered and on top of that this is $60 while prime remastered was $40.

im also looking forward to DKC4, after being so disappointed by Astrobot which was laughable easy with boring leveldesign and mediocre graphics and soundtrack… yeah, controller features were nice and a lot of Sony fanservice, but the imo important aspects of a platformer were 7/10 at best

I'm excited too, I've only played the game before through emulation, I always felt bad about that. I'm glad to finally be able to give Nintendo my money for a game that has given me hours of entertainment. Plus, they did the same exact thing for Pikmin before releasing Pikmin 4.
It may not have new content, but it at least has the content from the 3DS version plus button controls and for the most part a clean enough remaster so those alone make it and the definitive version of the game and, the fact that people genuinely only want to look at negative stuff about every single game release these days (understandable with some that do genuinely justifiably deserve it of course) and don't want to appreciate the positives about anything, not even the good things about rereleases is just lame and disappointing I understand that it's been tiring getting the same 2 DK games being rereleased left and right and we all want a new game, but Returns needed and I mean, NEEDED a definitive version because neither the Wii original or the 3DS version were the best ways to play it and despite some areas looking kind of off, it's still a solid looking remaster, no remaster is simple to do at all as it takes a while to HD every single aspect of a game including so many models, textures, and assets, and the fact that we even have DK content coming up in general with all the droughts this franchise has been having for a decade plus, it should be a GREAT thing that Nintendo still cares about it rather than not doing anything with it at all.

I loved DKCR but it's odd to me that anybody would defend the forced motion controls. People who enjoy them can use them, but people who don't shouldn't need to in a game that doesn't use them meaningfully. I know from working on the Classic Controller hack for the original Wii version that the shakes exist in a purely binary state, they are literally just buttons. It would have been a five minute job for Retro to hook them up to physical buttons and open the game up to more players. Baffling.
Thank you for this comment. I completely agree and like I said, if they gave the player a CHOICE to use buttons or motion controls, I 100% understand. But forcing me to shake my remote may seem like a small thing but it just drives me crazy.
We dont have DK64 on Switch... we dont have the entire franchise... This port costs more than when the original came out back then on the Wii + it was under "Nintendo Selects" so it costed 20 dollars really quick This is just a quick cashgrab As someone who played Tropical Freeze in 2014 back than on the Wii U, I have been waiting for 10 YEARS for a new entry. This is a spit in the face... The Switch is the console with the longest life cycle of every Nintendo system and we didn't get a single new DKC...

I don't care much about the graphics updates, and I already played the Wii AND 3DS versions, so I'm probably gonna pass. It IS nice that the entire DKC franchise is on one system now, though. If we get more content exclusive to this version in this version (which I don't see any signs of), I might buy it.
I very much would rather have a fully realized 3D remake of the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy on the Switch, with the same rendering treatment as the Crash N' Sane Trilogy, rather than... this. 😒
When they announced donkey kong country returns on switch, I thought myself why they did not include this game with tropical freeze when tropical freeze released on system. They requre to pay 60 dollars for tropical freeze, for the game that was released 4 years earlier on wii u. The same question I had when captain toad and mario 3d world were released separately.
Im currently playing DKC Returns on my Ayn Odin Pro 2 using Dolphing emulator 4X native resolution... The Switch version looks worse... The swwitch version has overall less details

I really hope they give us a hybrid option between button and motion controls, with buttons for rolling and groundpounding and the like, and motion for the beat down segments (like at the very start of the game, or when you finish off a boss). Because man was that satisfying to do on the Wii.

im also looking forward to DKC4, after being so disappointed by Astrobot which was laughable easy with boring leveldesign and mediocre graphics and soundtrack… yeah, controller features were nice and a lot of Sony fanservice, but the imo important aspects of a platformer were 7/10 at best

I'm excited too, I've only played the game before through emulation, I always felt bad about that. I'm glad to finally be able to give Nintendo my money for a game that has given me hours of entertainment. Plus, they did the same exact thing for Pikmin before releasing Pikmin 4.

It may not have new content, but it at least has the content from the 3DS version plus button controls and for the most part a clean enough remaster so those alone make it and the definitive version of the game and, the fact that people genuinely only want to look at negative stuff about every single game release these days (understandable with some that do genuinely justifiably deserve it of course) and don't want to appreciate the positives about anything, not even the good things about rereleases is just lame and disappointing
I understand that it's been tiring getting the same 2 DK games being rereleased left and right and we all want a new game, but Returns needed and I mean, NEEDED a definitive version because neither the Wii original or the 3DS version were the best ways to play it and despite some areas looking kind of off, it's still a solid looking remaster, no remaster is simple to do at all as it takes a while to HD every single aspect of a game including so many models, textures, and assets, and the fact that we even have DK content coming up in general with all the droughts this franchise has been having for a decade plus, it should be a GREAT thing that Nintendo still cares about it rather than not doing anything with it at all.

Im glad most of the DKC games are on switch ….BUTTTTT as someone who enjoyed all versions of DKC3 a lot and vastly prefers the GBA version Im sad that version isn’t avaible yet

I loved DKCR but it's odd to me that anybody would defend the forced motion controls. People who enjoy them can use them, but people who don't shouldn't need to in a game that doesn't use them meaningfully.
I know from working on the Classic Controller hack for the original Wii version that the shakes exist in a purely binary state, they are literally just buttons. It would have been a five minute job for Retro to hook them up to physical buttons and open the game up to more players. Baffling.
Thank you for this comment. I completely agree and like I said, if they gave the player a CHOICE to use buttons or motion controls, I 100% understand. But forcing me to shake my remote may seem like a small thing but it just drives me crazy.

This port costs more than when the original came out back then on the Wii + it was under "Nintendo Selects" so it costed 20 dollars really quick

I don't care much about the graphics updates, and I already played the Wii AND 3DS versions, so I'm probably gonna pass. It IS nice that the entire DKC franchise is on one system now, though. If we get more content exclusive to this version in this version (which I don't see any signs of), I might buy it.

When they announced donkey kong country returns on switch, I thought myself why they did not include this game with tropical freeze when tropical freeze released on system. They requre to pay 60 dollars for tropical freeze, for the game that was released 4 years earlier on wii u.
The same question I had when captain toad and mario 3d world were released separately.

The Returns series sucked, levels goes on for way too long and the enemies design looks like crap compared to the first two games.
