Well there's a reason Mephiles acts different. The script for this game is closer to his Japanese version, who was more theatrical and fond of wordplay than his English version who was played more as cold with bouts of rage when things don't go his way. The 'raise the curtain on this macabre play' I believe is a direct quote from the Japanese script of 06.
An environment detail and a way they use the white space to tell a bit of the story is that every other boss and level are up in white space. On the timeline. Yet Mephiles is the only one that’s hidden away. A split underneath the timeline. As if, white space and the timeline itself are trying to seal the only entity that in an alternate time, succeeded in tearing time and space apart. AND THAT TO ME IS SO COOL!
It's also interesting that white space couldn't fully impact that section of the world either, as it's the only FULLY colored section of the world that's only barred away.
I like how this version of Mephiles sounds desperate to re-enter the timeline, as evidenced by Robbie's performance. He went from deviously sophisticated to a cornered rabid dog. I was thrown off at first but I enjoyed this regardless.
As much as Dan Green does a more intimidating performance, I think Robbie Daymond does a good job at showing Mephiles’s desperation to become real again.
@@BHH71700 Actor in a Secondary Playable Character Role winner for 2017, baybee! ALWAYS be angry that The Game Awards still has one category for acting.
@@BHH71700 yeah. With how Sega wants nothing to do with the 4Kids voice cast these days barring Mike Pollock (I’m guessing that’s why Goku didn’t win the audition) as well as the direction they were going with Mephiles, Robbie was a very good call. Heck, Gareth calls Mephiles a different character here, but I also think that was the point. This isn’t the same Mephiles we knew in Sonic 06 where he was cold, calculating, manipulative, and basically immortal with practically no way to actually stop him for good. This is someone who just no longer exists and wants to be real again. He’s only pretending to be confident when he can tell that this isn’t the same Shadow he fought before- this is someone who can’t be affected by the mind games Mephiles loved to use in addition to Shadow’s confidence being majorly boosted between being with Maria again and being significantly more powerful with the black doom powers he was granted. My only real problem with this is that it makes Black Doom seem anticlimactic as an end. Don’t get me wrong. The final boss is still a very fun time, but even Mephiles was powerless to defeat Shadow. What the heck is Black Doom gonna do to Shadow when forced servitude is clearly not gonna work any better than the end of Shadow 05? Still, that’s just a nitpick (sorry for the rant. I just love this game so much).
People have shown that the simple act of adding a filter to Robbie Daymond's Memphis Tennessee voice makes him sound genuinely perfect. I dont blame Robbie or his performance at all.
Pour one out for every actor (including, under my dream system, Daymond, the almost certain Actor in a Secondary Playable Character Role 2017 winner) who could have been nominated and won if The Game Awards had a sane system of performance categorization. I will ALWAYS stump for Actor and Actress in a Sole/Primary Playable Character Role, Actor and Actress in a Secondary Playable Character Role and Actor and Actress in an NPC Role.
About wanting Dan Green to return as Mephiles, do note that Dan Green has semi retired from voice acting to take of his sons after his wife passed away in 2011. While he does have the occasional acting credit (most recently he was in a Code Geass anime from this year), he mostly works in the production side of things now so of all the actors from the 4Kids cast he was the least likely to come back for Shadow Generations.
@@LiaManila That’s not true, yes he did take a break after his wife sadly passed, but Dan Green isn’t semi retired, he’s still a working voice actor, I doubt he’d turn down a job if he got the call.
@LiaManila I watch alot of Yu-Gi-Oh World Tournament live action duel where each voice acting play out a character & do a duel and I can say Dan Green still got the voice of Yugi and Atem just the same as it was. Heck. He did one this year in Houston where he faces against his grandpa.
Someone did actually ask him after Mephiles was revealed to be returning, and he said he didn't even get a chance to reaudition. (Black Doom's original VA mentioned he did get the offer)
I do believe they’ve planted the seed for Mephiles to return in a future game, they make it clear he’s trapped in a void outside of time & is trying to get back into the timeline.
@@TheMarioman121 Oh...Oh, I'd love it if the Sonic 06 remake goes in that direction, especially since it would mean we'd effectively get a new game that uses the foundation of 06 to craft an entirely new experience.
The simple reason why companies don't remake bad games is because of their reputation. Many possible consumers will look at how the original game was received, see it was mostly negatively, and not bother buying the game. It's the same reason why companies don't remake bad movies. They know remaking something that was already considered good would make them a lot of money while remaking something considered bad will result in likely profit loss.
Well if there is enough of a fan demand like the Metroid 2 remake then it can happen as long as it's not in copyright hell like the Zelda CD-i games as no one knows who owns the copyright to those games so it can't even be remade even if Nintendo wanted to please the fans or realistically shut them up. And yes i called the original Metroid 2 a bad game and it kinda is as back in the day the second game in the series is always the worst with the 3rd being considered the best as Super Metroid and A Link to the Past are the 3rd games in their series and are considered the best of the respective series. And god dammit Nintendo remake Zelda 2 already as we seen how good the Metroid 2 remake y'all did was So in short if there is enough demand then they are willing to risk it, and there really is no way to tell if there is enough demand other than Piracy as that is why they remade Metroid 2 as they took down the popular AM2R and then to quell the backlash remade the damn game as otherwise they wouldn't Hell even Bubsy got a remake because enough of a demand for it was met in the game "Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back" back in 2017, well to be fair i don't exactly know if it is a remake but fact of the matter is a terrible franchise came back because of enough demand revived it even if some of the demand were just meming for it's return
@@AzureGreatheart To be fair over time mockery turns into people wanting a new one or a remake, especially with the state of most modern games these days not being that great. But the most funny thing is there are genuinely Zelda fans who wants the CD-i Zelda games to be remade They even point out the similarities to Wand of Gamelon, Echoes of Wisdom, and Zelda's Adventure from the clothes to the plot and the wand really. Like they actually want a remake Though for Bubsy I am surprised people actually bought the new one. Still there are a time and a place to remake crap into stuff people want and current times is the best time to do it, as again just look at the state of triple A games these days and you would understand why anyone would rather buy Bubsy over that slop When presented with two pieces of crap one would rather if they had to pick to pick the less stinky one
@@JohnnyYeTaecanUktena The reason they took down AM2R was because they were already remaking Metroid 2. There's no way they could have made the game in the time frame between AM2R's release and Samus Return's unveiling next year.
I love Maria’s contextualizing of Shadow’s name by saying “a shadow tells you where to find the light”, feels like a proper in-universe reason for why he was named as such and not just “he was designed as a classic 90’s anti-hero with an edgy name, doesn’t get any deeper than that”.
There was an in-universe reason with the project title, which got called that because a shadow is something vague and untouchable, like the immortality that the project was aiming for. So it can also represent Shadow's uncertainty about his purpose, which then gets recontextualized with Maria's interpretation.
If I remember correctly, Mephiles' lines about a "macabre play" is directly from the Japanese version of 06 Also, if they made his voice a bit deeper with a filter, he would sound better in my opinion
I loved when Maria showed up at the end and said the title right before Black Doom was annihilated by the light emanating from Shadow. Then the part where Sonic and Gerald stay behind to seal the Black Comet of Darkness was a real tearjerker...
To give context to the Tomb Raider mention, Crystal Dynamics is expensive to run due to location and when it got sold to Embracer and it’s financials were published as part of the sale it was shown that the studio barely made money at all most years, so Sqaure’s initial concern was based on “what if sales are all front loaded like many games after this game cost so much “ it eventually sold enough tho and square were satisfied
Headcanon: At the end of the fight, all the memories of 06 came flooding back to Shadow and that’s why he specifically said “There is no future for you. Ever.” He remembered just how fucked the timeline got because of this literal monster made from his own shade and made sure that this time, he stayed in the damn scepter.
I know the guys talked over it, but that Maria cutscene is so freaking good. I think Frontiers made a good point to try and make the characters be more genuine, like with Sonic and Knuckles having a heart to heart. So its so interesting to see Maria being panicked over Shadow's obsession with vengeance and trying to bring him back before he goes to far. Its a bit cheesy yes, but it is such a sweet moment. I "hope" that Shadow will keep parts of that development in the future, but who's to say.
She also says the line "This isn't who you are" Which I swear is referencing shadow at the of shadow of the hedgehog levels routes going "This is who I am"
I like Robbie as Mephiles, I just think he could've gone alot harder with the performance. Robbie has shown that he can go hard as crazy and unhinged and menacing in other roles. He hits it well in his "I WANT... TO EXIST!" line, I just wish he had more of that energy throughout. maybe channeling Mephiles' Japanese delivery.
22:25 i can only think of a few industry games that got popular almost immediately thanks to word of mouth within a month and met or exceeded expectations: Apex Legends (Respawn Entertainment, owned by publisher EA), HellDivers 2 (Arrowhead Studios, publisher Sony), and Hi-Fi Rush (Tango Gameworks, formerly owned by Bethesda). the last oen was originally sent out ot die and was shadow dropped early 2023. they had no idea hwo big htat game was gonna be (also the main character is voiced by this mephiles)
I actually really like how Mephiles was handled in this game. He went from being more controlled and level headed to desperate after realizing he was gonna be erased from time again.
As someone who really hated Sonic '06 and actively dunks on it today, I would absolutely be on board with a remake of '06. As long as the game isn't buggy, I guarantee it would do well.
He's closer to his theatrical Japanese version, but this take also works as a follow-up to his first outing since...Well, he ultimately failed and has been given this once-in-a-lifetime chance to restore his existence. If he sounds different than his original depiction, it's because he's desperate to exist again and isn't going to waste time with mind games.
Sonic Frontiers does just show that it doesn't matter how much power your console, PC or whatever machine you use has got; if the game is not made well or optimised well, the extra power is mostly worthless. Sure it'll run better with more power, but it won't get rid of all of the issues like the pop-in.
@@Kingdom850 I get that it’s unavoidable, but this one of the many reasons why Frontiers is going to age the worst out all Sonic HE2 in terms of Visuals. It’s a GLARING issue combined with the inconsistent art direction and poor asset reuse. Final Horizon was the absolute worst with this.
@@zigslotheon what the hell? "Giant empty hub areas" don't make any of those games open world. Why do you think that. They're segmented by loading screen transitions to get to one level from another. An open world by design has no segmented load screens. You get into the huge map and travel anywhere you want. Also you're hilarious if you think current Sonic Team is the exact same staff that made those games nearly 20 years ago.
0:18 To be fair, I only bought it because I wanted to play it on the go. But now that the Steam Deck exists, I can agree with that, lol. Also, Memphis Tennessee is the best boss in the game.
If Sega and Sonic Team decided they wanted to go through with an 06 Remake, it would truly do them so much to bring ChaosX and their team along for the journey in developing it mechanically. Don’t think there’s any other way to go about it considering the shift the entire community has made on its legacy based on that fan game.
I say they ought to work with ChaosX' team to convert Project X into a console release and have Ian Flynn rewrite the story. I mean, Project 06 has already done the work of making the actual game, so all we need now are the Bosses and the story that ties everything together...And if Flynn's detractors complain about him revising the script of Sonic 06, I will gladly remind them that 06's original story was a mess despite the good moments it had.
It's one thing to rework existing assets for something like a remaster or a fan game. It's another to have to help develop completely new assets for a remake. I sincerely doubt ChaosX would be brought onto the development team and Sega would just force it in house.
@@Kingdom850 Agreed but I still would consider them a reliable asset. ChaosX had never played the base game and made a better one from scrap. Feel like that alone should at least be recognized by Sonic Team and if not pick them up for direct involvement, at least communicate in an advisory form perhaps.
@ZeDLoCs Reliable asset how? Again, a remake would require new assets, not the old ones from nearly twenty years ago that they've been using for Project 06. It's not the same thing. It's not like when Whitehead and his team made Mania using an engine he created for his fan projects and would later use on the mobile ports of the classic Sonic games. Sonic Team would want to make a 06 remake in Hedgehog Engine 2, and I doubt ChaosX has experience with that engine. Not to mention the possibility of Sonic Team retooling the gameplay in an 06 remake as well. There's too many factors to consider here and none of them are as simple as "bring this guy in".
@ not an asset in terms of graphical assets like textures, but an asset to gauge and communicate with during the development process. Hence a kind of Advisory relationship.
13:30 You guys had Mike Pollock on your channel for an interview a long time ago, and he said that unlike Japan where you have a voice role for life, in 'Murica you have to re-audition for it every time a new game is released because "what if someone else wants to try?"
@@IJReviewss And they have. Plus, that review was...12 YEARS AGO?! Yeah, safe to say Clement has matured since then...Holy crap, it's been 12 years since he reviewed Sonic 06.
The issue with the 06 remake from a gameplay standpoint was that fans were worried as to whether or not CURRENT Sonic Team would be capable of remaking it while still keeping true to the potential of 06 & some of the good stuff that are actually in that game. Like adding physics/leaning to the rails, keeping the ranking system, fixing Sonic's gems & his spindash to be similar to SA1/2, & having the characters play mostly same just without the bugs & some stuff added to their moveset that were suppose to be there in the original game. Like P-06 does most of this already. Or would they just remake it and make it like Sonic Frontiers/Shadow Gens with the boost gameplay & the spinboost, no physics on rails, & more of a time scoring system. It WOULD be a better game (none of the glitches, gamebreaking mechanics, or the terrible loading screens) but it wouldn't be an 06 remake & more of a Frontiers 3. Which in that case they would be better off making a different game. Or maybe just revisit Soleanna in general & tell a different story with a different gameplay attached to it.
I felt bad for Mephiles, that last line from about wanting to exist is played with such clear pain and desperation. Shadow’s VA meanwhile sounds so cold and sinister about how he doesn’t belong in any future. Sonic voice acting is so odd these days that I honestly can’t tell what’s intentional anymore.
The whole fight's writing is entirely intentional. For Mephiles, he's fighting to restore his own existence...But Shadow has no idea who this doppelganger is. All he knows is that this demon tried to kill him, is clearly a dangerous threat, and is ultimately standing between him and defeating Black Doom, so his response is appropriate. Plus, even at his best, Shadow is a ruthless pragmatist. If he's faced with a threat to the world, he'll destroy it without hesitation.
@smashmaster521 I see your point and I think even Heroes Shadow would probably say something similar. But my point is about the voice acting. Shadow just sounds way more evil to me than Mephiles, even with the vocal filter mod.
Also Chai from Hi-Fi Rush, a couple of characters in the modern WarioWare series... and some (psycho) pretty-boy detective with a knack for "delicious pancakes" in Persona 5.... can't remember the name. (jk, i know it's Akechi)
if i had a nickel for every time an english tuxedo mask voice actor went on to play spider-man in some fashion, i'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
I will say, it’s amazing that they brought Mephiles back, I honestly thought we’d never see this character again, his new boss fight is fantastic, however I really don’t like his new voice, no shade to Robbie Daymond, but the direction is not good, he just sounds a regular guy, he doesn’t have the sinister vibe that Dan Green gave the character in 06.
The way I view Memphis Tennessee's personality shift is that in 06 he was this calculating puppet master who had literally eons to plan out his next moves. In this game, he's desperate with no time at all, he just need to get back in the timeline, and so his voice and personality reflect that.
A sleeper hit from Square i would say is The Guardians of the Galaxy game. That game was such a sleeper hit and its a shame we'll most likely never get a sequel
As long as it was just 06 they wanted to remake I would be fine with it (*cough or Sonic Riders *cough cough). If they built it from the ground up with the modern character designs and animation, took out all of the crappy side missions, and beat the ugly off of Elise’s character design, I’d be ok to play.
I can get the eyebrow raise with mephiles new direction/voice but considering he’s aware he loses in 06 and is desperate to return to the timeline in any fashion I can get the choice of Robbie Daymond since his performance as goro akechi shows he’s really good at playing desperation which fits the character in this context tho I do admit it would have been interesting to hear dan green lose his composure in his mephiles voice and 70% of my giving this a thumbs up is because I recently became addicted to persona lol
@@JJ_R to me, 06 made the Chaos Emeralds look way too broken. Like ok, 1 can enhance time stop through specific users (making it look like you're teleporting) and 7 = "miracle", super form and/or open up rift between dimensions (with an equal or larger power source on the other side), but a mere 2 already gives you time travel? I call bs power scaling-wise. I get the narrative needed the emeralds because super forms but why completely neglect the mcguffins specifically made for time travel? Hell, why not let Silver use those to time travel nowadays instead of Fast Friends Forever's stupid "random portal appears in front of Silver with no explanation whatsoever because why would we want the TIME TRAVELER to actually be able to TIME TRAVEL?".
I’m gonna be the odd person out and say that I actually love both Mephiles voices. Dan Green’s menacing baritone fit his colder personality in the 2006 English script, and Robbie Daymond’s take goes very well with the more over the top lines the character has here and the sheer desperation Mephiles has to kill Shadow and… exist. Plus, he literally sounds like Goro Akechi and I find that hilarious because (Persona 5 spoiler). And it would be remiss of me not to mention that Dan Green sadly retired from voice work a long time ago. On the subject of a 2006 remake, I think fans already proved that could be done and Sonic Team themselves should make a (mostly) original 2006-style game that is actually good on its own merits.
I love the battle with Mephiles so much! Since Elise blew out the Flame of Solaris, thus erasing Mephiles from the current timeline, he is now desperate to not only defeat Shadow(given their past history) but to restore himself in the timestream! The added touch of Shadow not remembering Mephiles and that making Mephiles angrier is so good!
Robbie Daymond can actually go pretty deep when given the chance; he was Kenshiro in the Yakuza studios Fist of the North Star game and he sounds near unrecognizable. I'm surprised they had him stick so close to his normal register as Mephiles.
I too was upset when I heard Mephiles' voice and I realized it wasn't Dan Green anymore, but the more I heard it, the more I appreciate the different take on the character.
...I never thought about that. I always remembered Kingdom Hearts' quote about "the closer you stand to light, the greater your shadow becomes" as an idiom for your darkness growing bigger. But I never thought about Maria's quote here saying "a shadow shows you where to find the light". I am so gonna use that for my next book!
The reason that Dan Green never reprised Mephiles was that he had sorta retired from voice acting lately and there’s a rumor that he doesn’t remember playing Mephiles at all. Don’t quote me on that though.
10:42 Mephiles: Shadow, we meet again. Shadow: Who are you, and how do you know I'm Shadow? Mephiles: ... Oh... Right... 14:55 I don't think you _can_ do that story right. Besides, what would you even call it? 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 (202X)?' 23:07 As Steph Sterlin argues frequently, the problem isn't the cost of making games, the problem is the cost of executives. Those are the people enacting those layoffs because the games weren't successful _enough._ Not 'Unsuccessful.' 'Not successful enough.'
you knowing Seeing Mephiles in this game makes me wish Sega didn't force Ian Flynn to scrap the original idea for Shadow fall where Black Doom and Mephiles team up against shadow that would have been cool.
The Shadow Generations trailer showcasing the Doom powers was also the first instance of the Supporting Me remix...that was when it had lyrics. And still, they were not present in the game proper. I'm sure we're gonna get the remix in its entirety by the time the _official_ OST comes out, but still, what a missed opportunity. lol
Sonic fans: Yay! Mephiles is back! Does that mean he's going to, maybe, appear in future games...? SEGA: There is no future for him... EVER Sonic fans:😥 But seriously, I wouldn't mind if he somehow returned, no matter how ridiculous the reason
I want someone to make a fan animation of Shadow cradling Maria's corpse and screaming, "I should've been the one to fill your dark soul with LIIIIIGHHHTTTT!"
7:22 Huh, turns out we get to play Nights Into Dreams AND Superman 64. This new(?) type of ring which turn occasionally invisible/deactivated still feel very weird to me. Not only do we have invisible springs in this universe but invisible rings as well.
I love how they handled Mephiles here. As half of a being that can also control and destroy time, he's well aware that he was banished to a splinter time with no beginning or end, he's trapped in limbo, completely alone, not even having Iblis there with him. And the one being he probably hates more than anything else suddenly pops in due to the Time Eater fuckery, and he sees his one chance to return to the main timeline by killing Shadow. He's still hammy but an undercurrent of desperation and terror flows through it and comes to the surface in the final part of the fight, he desperately wants to escape and exist, and Shadow slams the door shut on him, forever. And Shadow doesn't even remember Mephiles, another massive blow to his already fractured psyche. Also, notice that you need FOUR keys to unlock the door to Mephiles instead of three. Even the timeline itself doesn't want him coming back.
No time was spent on the actual boss fight but im just gonna say it, mephiles isnt just the best boss fight in Shadow gens its one of if not the best boss fight in the series. I will die on that hill. Also to bring up another game studio in the topic of unrealistic expectations and all that: Hi-Fi rush is a legitimate perfect video game, like a 10/10 everyone and their mother should play it. And Tango Games wanted to make a sequel, but Microsoft shut them down and that was so upsetting, luckily they got aquired by another company so hopefully that sequel happens.
This video’s comment is how I found out that Mephiles in this game is voices by Robbie Daymond. And now I have the image stuck my head of Goro Akechi killing Sonic.
Remaking Sonic 06 would be awesome, but at the same time do we need a reminder of a game that did so much long term damage to the franchise? I have to agree with Ted on this, it's better to use the time and money to remake a game that's more fondly remembered than a game that left such a severe stain on the franchise that's still being talked about today. And Sonic 06 is turning 20 years old in a couple years. And I'm with Gareth, I'd prefer to have Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 remade first.
Shadow to Black Doom: "I destroyed you once... and I'll do it again!" Also Shadow: "Professor what did he mean by "our last encounter?" Guess Doom Powers come with memory loss lol
I can immediately give a good example here on regard about studios ditching games and what NOT to do. "Alan Wake 1" came out on the same time as Red Dead Redemption, and only sold 10% of what RDD did. The studio still believed that AW had a chance, and made a re-release later as well as implemented it in their next game, "CONTROL", of where the success of a cult classic started to show up. It took AW years to be sold proper in bulk, but once it was done, their creators got a good implication "we should make a second one". Meanwhile, well... We got Fallout because original creators of Wasteland 1 did not believe it would be worth it to make a sequel. They only made Wasteland 2 **25 years later** after Fallout had become a massive hit up to New Vegas by then and realized "oh crap this genre would've actually sold like hotcakes..!"
17:12: Oh Clement, I was there in Mega Man's funeral (Secret Level). Nobody showed up. At this point, he's a forgotten, dead franchise and we'll have to accept that. Didn't you know? The Mega Man Fanbase imploded so good luck getting a fanmade remake of X6 as well since a good bunch of them are narcissists.
I've said this before, I wonder if Robbie Daymond's Mephiles would be better if he used his Happy Chaos voice from Guilty Gear. That line, "Time to open the curtain on this macabre play", is a total Happy Chaos line.
I Ted's point of why it's a good idea to remake games people have fond memories of. My problem is that seems to be the only thing devs ever do because they know it's easy money. Rather than also remaking games that didn't do well.
The only reason why they're entertaining the idea of an 06 remake is because Silver hasn't appeared in enough mainline games to warrant a Silver Generations.
Dan's kind of retired from voice acting these days, the last time I heard him do anything voice related was in pokemon a few years ago where he voiced characters in two episodes, but i've not heard a peep out of him since then...at least not in anything main stream I watch that he would be involved with. Now as for Mephiles new voice, Robbie i think does a good job, since it sounds like his Goro Akechi voice, and considering that Mephiles is acting desperate here instead of his calm and collected self from 06 i've got no problem with the behavior he's taking here either.
Another decently successful original game was Hi Fi Rush from Tango Gameworks and Microsoft decided because they didn't get Skyrim numbers they axed the studio even though the game was shown to have been profitable in the overall picture. It makes me wonder who the suits are to make decisions like this.
I’d love to see the Final Fantasy VII Resident Evil treatment for Sonic 06. As an 06 fan, I agree: Sonic Adventures 1 and 2 should be remade before 06.
There IS something in the back of my head playing frontiers and knowing it was also on switch which made me think it was scaled down in some aspects, like-- If gens had to come out for 360, ps3 and wii. Imagine if that was a plan. I feels so thankful that didn't happen. I know it needs to be on switch but this might sound mean but I wish switch wasn't a SKU
Like I said before, the Japanese version of the Mephiles boss fight does a better job of keeping Mephiles in character while also selling the seething rage and desperation he feels towards Shadow. His JP VA just does a great job, especially his final line. Robbie's is just lacking in portraying Mephiles' original character while also not really selling his emotion until the final line in which case he doesn't sound angry, he sounds sad and desperate. My issue with Robbie isn't even inherently that he doesn't sound like Dan Green, its that he doesn't sound like either Dan or Mephiles' Japanese voice. My biggest worry with a potential 06 remake is that rather than trying to fix the flaws present in 06s story, they will make a completely different game and call it 06. Like I don't even like 06, but there are story elements there worth keeping. Gerald was already old when he first made Shadow. Its a safe assumption to say he wouldn't live another 50 years. I think its a pretty safe assumption to say that Gerald recorded the message for Shadow before anything went wrong with GUN as a way to make up for basically selling out humanity. The message he recorded when he was insane was the last thing he ever said before being executed.
Which makes me wonder how he survived in the third Sonic movie - unless flashbacks depict him around Eggman's age. In any case, bringing him back at all to meet his grandson was a dumb idea, and I'm not looking forward to how they justify it.
I think we're more likely to see a Sonic 06 "follow-up" than a Sonic 06 remake, kinda like what Shadow Gens is to Shadow 05. It seems Sega and Sonic Team have no interest in "fixing" a bad game (or rather, a game that sold poorly and will probably sell even worse the second time,) but they'll definitely scavenge it for parts.
@@SonicTheCutehog True, but those initial sales came with the context of being "the very first HD Sonic game on one of the very first HD consoles;" not "that one horrible Sonic game everybody talks about but nobody wants to play." The market interest seems to be less than zero right now.
Honestly i hope mephilis is brought back through time shenanigans as shadows pure evil rival, cause sonic has like 10 rivals, but only 1 in the games has stayed evil, that being metal
They will never remake the bad games because it won't sell. Everyone says it would do better but even then what would you as an average consumer be more excited for? A remake of SA 1&2 or 06? Especially after years of youtubers saying its bad why would anyone give it the time of day? I will never get why people get so obsessed over that idea when its doomed to fail.
I get the comments on mephilis being different, but honestly, I actually found metal sonic's voice being different to be even more "oh wow that's different," especially the filter
The Sonic game I would love to see remade most is Heroes. I love the team mechanic as a concept, the overall aesthetic is what I consider the series' best, the soundtrack of course is fantastic, and the story of Metal Sonic rebelling against Eggman and becoming the big bad has a lot of potential. It's all just held back by the poor writing (despite that being a guilty pleasure of mine), inconsistent quality of voice performances, the controls, and the Chaotix story's tedious mission structure. Seeing how beautiful Rail Canyon looks in Shadow Gens and how Seaside Hill holds up visually in Sonic Gens is just reinforcing my desire for a Heroes remake.
11:45 As much as I prefer Ryan Drummond as Neo Metal, he wants absolutely nothing to do with Sega after just being cast aside for Jason Griffith without even being given a chance.
he's said he'd return to the role of sonic if given the chance in interviews in the past, but he's not leaving his union or being paid a pittance to do so. which basically means never, but not because of the replacement. dude's good friends even with griffith now, no hard feelings towards the guy at all, they regularly interacted on twitter and at cons last i heard
I tend to disagree when anyone says the soundtrack for Shadow Generations is mid, or that they aren't fans of it... EXCEPT for both Chaos Island themes. Especially Act 1. I could not care less if the point of the remix was to fuse the Island theme with a cyberspace vibe, cause 1) that's not an excuse for it to be very messy & 2) you're not even in Cyberspace. Act 2 I'm fine with, cause it actually sounds good. Just super weak compared to the rest of the soundtrack.
I'll say Chaos Island sounds better in this game...But that's because I didn't care for Frontiers' OST outside of the Titan themes. It's why I swapped out Chaos Island's music for Undefeatable (Act 1) and Flame Core - The Volcano (Act 2).
I'm actually the opposite with Chaos Island's music, Act 1 sounds great to me (considering Dropoholic is one of my favorite Cyberspace tracks it's not surprising), but Act 2 is honestly one of my least favorite tracks in Shadow Generations.
I never knew that.
Interesting
And people would still say it's bad writing.
i'm guessing that's also the reason for the cheesy "shadow tag" line
@@ctpp64 Actually no, so there's no direct translation for that one, in Japan he just uses some other game.
Plus its the only boss that needs 4 keys to access
My mind never made that connection when initially playing the boss fight but I love the idea of that!
Mephiles: You took everything from me.
Shadow: I don’t even know who you are
As much as Dan Green does a more intimidating performance, I think Robbie Daymond does a good job at showing Mephiles’s desperation to become real again.
Daymond is really good at playing these types of characters

I don't know, every time I hear Robbie Daymond all I can hear is the psycho swordsmith from demon slayer
People have shown that the simple act of adding a filter to Robbie Daymond's Memphis Tennessee voice makes him sound genuinely perfect. I dont blame Robbie or his performance at all.
Which is why, there’s a mod for that!
His performance is fantastic actually it’s just Mephiles voice is normally really deep
Because he is indeed part lizard
And in the Friend Zone
Pour one out for every actor (including, under my dream system, Daymond, the almost certain Actor in a Secondary Playable Character Role 2017 winner) who could have been nominated and won if The Game Awards had a sane system of performance categorization. I will ALWAYS stump for Actor and Actress in a Sole/Primary Playable Character Role, Actor and Actress in a Secondary Playable Character Role and Actor and Actress in an NPC Role.
06 Mephiles didn't have a filter afaik so that's probably why they didn't take that route
@@LiaManila
That’s not true, yes he did take a break after his wife sadly passed, but Dan Green isn’t semi retired, he’s still a working voice actor, I doubt he’d turn down a job if he got the call.
@ Ah it seems i misremembered, i saw his filmography post 2011 being much much smaller than it was prior so i guess i just assumed my bad lol
If he still has it for yugi, then he certainly still would have it for mephiles and knuckles @@jaretco6423
Oh god, that just makes me imagine an 06 remake in the style of the FF7 Remakes. And I both love and hate the mental image of that.

But then you get the Crow remade and it's just as shit as the original.
And god dammit Nintendo remake Zelda 2 already as we seen how good the Metroid 2 remake y'all did was
So in short if there is enough demand then they are willing to risk it, and there really is no way to tell if there is enough demand other than Piracy as that is why they remade Metroid 2 as they took down the popular AM2R and then to quell the backlash remade the damn game as otherwise they wouldn't
Hell even Bubsy got a remake because enough of a demand for it was met in the game "Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back" back in 2017, well to be fair i don't exactly know if it is a remake but fact of the matter is a terrible franchise came back because of enough demand revived it even if some of the demand were just meming for it's return
@@JohnnyYeTaecanUktenaWas there demand for Bubsy though? I feel like the developers just mistook the mockery for people actually wanting a new one.
@@AzureGreatheart To be fair over time mockery turns into people wanting a new one or a remake, especially with the state of most modern games these days not being that great. But the most funny thing is there are genuinely Zelda fans who wants the CD-i Zelda games to be remade
They even point out the similarities to Wand of Gamelon, Echoes of Wisdom, and Zelda's Adventure from the clothes to the plot and the wand really. Like they actually want a remake
Though for Bubsy I am surprised people actually bought the new one. Still there are a time and a place to remake crap into stuff people want and current times is the best time to do it, as again just look at the state of triple A games these days and you would understand why anyone would rather buy Bubsy over that slop
When presented with two pieces of crap one would rather if they had to pick to pick the less stinky one
I gotta say, I been watching brainscratch for over ten years. I love this commentary and I’m so happy you are all still doing this together.
If I remember correctly, Mephiles' lines about a "macabre play" is directly from the Japanese version of 06
Also, if they made his voice a bit deeper with a filter, he would sound better in my opinion
I loved when Maria showed up at the end and said the title right before Black Doom was annihilated by the light emanating from Shadow. Then the part where Sonic and Gerald stay behind to seal the Black Comet of Darkness was a real tearjerker...
Mephiles: Remember me Shadow?
Shadow: No
4:51 Johnny actually mentioned this during his Sonic X Shadow Generations review.
He didn't have Maria to tell him this isn't who he is last time. It's so big that he gets to actually talk with Maria again.
Sega likes to revert back to status quo after every storyline so I kinda doubt Shadow's keeping anything from this game. Just look at the IDW comics.
Something I noticed about that cutscene was that apparently Shadow had yet to fight Black Doom according to the cutscene
@@Shantae1188 he did fight him, i just think he was trying to hide that fact from maria and gerald

No, Mephiles speaks the same way. “Macabre Play”… “You forgive humanity this folly then?” That’s the same Mephiles, and it’s so cool.

@@Kingdom850Unleashed? 06? Adventure 1?

Yeah I could have sworn he said at the end of his 3 hour review from 2012 he didn't want sonic team to focus on remaking 06 and now he's all for it?

My man. I thought I was the only one who recognized that truth.
To piss you off, Gareth. Mephiles is voiced by Robbie Daymond, who is Tuxedo Mask in the Viz dub of Sailor Moon. Hah!
Also Chai from Hi-Fi Rush, a couple of characters in the modern WarioWare series...

To be fair it's hard to be sinister when you're desperately focused on killing Shadow so you can return to existence.
The way I view Memphis Tennessee's personality shift is that in 06 he was this calculating puppet master who had literally eons to plan out his next moves. In this game, he's desperate with no time at all, he just need to get back in the timeline, and so his voice and personality reflect that.
"There's no future for you. *Ever."*
I'm going to say this here. Whoever is playing this not using Chaos Control is bugging the shit out of me.
If we do get a remake of ‘06, I want the Chaos Emeralds to be replaced with the Time Stones, the artifacts that are known for time travel!
We're never letting that reference from Sonic Generations 2024 go, are we?
If anything, the change from Chaos Emeralds to Time Stones would make that reference make more sense.
@@JJ_R It would make reviving Sonic make sense as well minus the kissing part
@@JJ_R to me, 06 made the Chaos Emeralds look way too broken.

It's weird seeing Black Doom move so much. Dude was practically T posing in Shadow 05.

So why didn’t Ryan just cut out him doing Rail Canyon again since we already saw it?
Up to the descent to Doom's Eye.
Four is also associated with Death in japanese culture too.
Shadow to Black Doom: "I destroyed you once... and I'll do it again!"
Also Shadow: "Professor what did he mean by "our last encounter?" Guess Doom Powers come with memory loss lol
That line, "Time to open the curtain on this macabre play", is a total Happy Chaos line.
as someone naive that bought Sonic Frontier on switch day 1. i'll tell you 1 thing.
i'm faster than the textures.
Did you guys ever expect that Mega Man and Black Doom would have something in common before this year?
I Ted's point of why it's a good idea to remake games people have fond memories of. My problem is that seems to be the only thing devs ever do because they know it's easy money. Rather than also remaking games that didn't do well.
The only reason why they're entertaining the idea of an 06 remake is because Silver hasn't appeared in enough mainline games to warrant a Silver Generations.
I say the music for Chaos Island act 2 sounds like something from Mega Man 11
Dan's kind of retired from voice acting these days, the last time I heard him do anything voice related was in pokemon a few years ago where he voiced characters in two episodes, but i've not heard a peep out of him since then...at least not in anything main stream I watch that he would be involved with.
Now as for Mephiles new voice, Robbie i think does a good job, since it sounds like his Goro Akechi voice, and considering that Mephiles is acting desperate here instead of his calm and collected self from 06 i've got no problem with the behavior he's taking here either.
17:20 give us an SA1/2/Heroes remake call it the Dreamcast Trilogy!
Another decently successful original game was Hi Fi Rush from Tango Gameworks and Microsoft decided because they didn't get Skyrim numbers they axed the studio even though the game was shown to have been profitable in the overall picture. It makes me wonder who the suits are to make decisions like this.
But then KRAFTON (the PUBG folks) saved Tango Gameworks and Hi-Fi Rush
@CHECKthisvid Given their recent history the future for Tango Gameworks is questionable at best.
I got this game on the Xbox One. I actually enjoy that version a lot.
06 was a Platinum Hit on the Xbox 360, it didn't sell poorly
@@SonicTheCutehog True, but those initial sales came with the context of being "the very first HD Sonic game on one of the very first HD consoles;" not "that one horrible Sonic game everybody talks about but nobody wants to play." The market interest seems to be less than zero right now.
@ I know, I'm just saying it didn't sell poorly
Gareth, Gareth, Gareth.....Robby Daymond is great as Mephiles
Honestly i hope mephilis is brought back through time shenanigans as shadows pure evil rival, cause sonic has like 10 rivals, but only 1 in the games has stayed evil, that being metal
They will never remake the bad games because it won't sell. Everyone says it would do better but even then what would you as an average consumer be more excited for? A remake of SA 1&2 or 06? Especially after years of youtubers saying its bad why would anyone give it the time of day? I will never get why people get so obsessed over that idea when its doomed to fail.
I like most of the remixes, and also I think Mephiles’ voice actor did well tbh.
The only characters that remember the events of 06 are Mephiles & maybe Sonic?
Ah yes, the part that contains "The Move That Kills Sonic"
I did actually buy Sonic Frontiers on Switch. I had a great time actually
Mephiles’ fight was so cool, but he gave me the least trouble out of all the bosses. S rank on my first try.
honestly not counting black doom Metal Overlord is the toughest of the normal bosses imo.
Same, but that just made him more satisfying to fight, especially on Hard Mode.
I should've saved you.
...I SHOULD HAVE FILLED YOUR DARK SOUL WITH LIGHT
{LAAAIGHT!}
I've never heard the OG of Chaos Island or played Sonic Frontiers so I don't mind EDM remix of the song.

As much as I prefer Ryan Drummond as Neo Metal, he wants absolutely nothing to do with Sega after just being cast aside for Jason Griffith without even being given a chance.
That plus Sega telling him he had to leave his union if he wanted to return as Sonic.
@ Ryan probably wouldn’t return even then.
he's said he'd return to the role of sonic if given the chance in interviews in the past, but he's not leaving his union or being paid a pittance to do so. which basically means never, but not because of the replacement. dude's good friends even with griffith now, no hard feelings towards the guy at all, they regularly interacted on twitter and at cons last i heard
@@peliukun8164 I don’t think the scandals surrounding him with EmuEmi do him any favors either.
Mephiles..you wouldnt have been erased if you werent successful at killing Sonic
@@smashmaster521 I think I did Volcano for Act 1 and I wanna say Sky Troops for Act 2. I don't remember what I did for that one.
@@koopaeliminator4148 Sky Troops fits Rail Canyon Act 2 better if you ask me.
I'm actually the opposite with Chaos Island's music, Act 1 sounds great to me (considering Dropoholic is one of my favorite Cyberspace tracks it's not surprising), but Act 2 is honestly one of my least favorite tracks in Shadow Generations.
