It's Big! LEGO Space Shuttle Orbiter at Minifig Scale.

- A close-up look at my custom built 1/37 scale Space Shuttle Orbiter, built with LEGO bricks.
Here I talk about the current version of the model and some of the modifications I hope to make in the future. Some of the features shown include:
* Brick built nose countours and crew compartment windows
* removable forward RCS pod
* detailed flight deck and mid deck with room for minifigs; includes removable roof and side panel for playability
* operable side hatch
* opening payload bay doors
* poseable Canadarm and Ku-band antenna
* poseable SSMEs
* poseable elevons and split rudder
* retractable landing gear
This is the most realistic shuttle Lego model ever!
Really cool! Makes me wonder what a minifig scale crew dragon would look like!

That's incredible. I built a roughly minifig-scale shuttle and put it up on LEGO ideas a few years ago, and I was pretty impressed with myself. This puts it to shame! Your attention to detail and dedication to keeping everything so scale is mind-blowing.
Thanks Sam! I came across your IDEAS entry when working on my model and was very impressed. you solved some if the design challenges elegantly. It's a shame LEGO did not take your entry and run with it!
I liked seeing the inclusion of the oms ports as actual bricks on that build. The overhead shot of it was fantastic too. I think that eventually lego will most likely be interested in larger shuttle sets.
Thanks Jameson! The RCS portion of the OMS pod was a challenge and I'm pleased with how it turned out.
THIS IS AMAZING, i wish Lego could make this a kit, even tho it would be expensive as fuck, it doesn't have the nose problem like the recent Discovery, super well built, and you can even PLAY ON IT, like c'mon Lego, you did Apollo, now do the Space Shuttle!

This is really accurate and really well done. I’m very impressed with the way you got the irregular shapes on the orbiter. Fyi, the joysticks in reality were very small, so the cockpit is still very accurate to the real thing.

thanks! I don't think I mentioned it in the video but I estimate I spent 300 hrs over a few years on the first version, this includes bricklink ordering and part sorting time, and design time too.

Amazing! This is soooooo accurate to the real Space Shuttle. Love the attention to detail. Btw you have amazing talent.
Perhaps it could save you a bit of trouble to know that the real orbiters gear was not hydraulically retractable since it is a glider. Gear was retracted up by maintenance after a landing.
interesting, i knew the forward gear doors had to be closed manually but hadn't thought about the gear retraction itself. that would simplyify things. thanks

@@theglitch9325 I actually like the cockpit windows cause they made a custom part for that. I think the set is worth the money, i built mine yesterday
@@matyasnovak9539 yea, i dont "hate" them, but its a little too round in my opinion, the real space shuttle has some small edges and other things that the window piece cant show, but overall i like the set
Thanks! I agree, I don't think LEGO would ever make a shuttle this large as a set. The latest offering had great potential but somehow they found a way to botch that. Fortunately it's lego so any body can try their hand at correcting the most glaring mistakes (except that weird window print!).
I would totally buy the instructions to build this, and then cash out my 401K on the thousands of bricks required to build this!!!! 😂

Hey, once you get everything working properly, I kindmof want to see a glued together version ride some modle rocket engines activated at the altitude a balloon for sending things to "space' (actually to the stratosphere) pops. Bonus points for remote control. Extra bonus points for camera in the flight deck looking out the front streaming to something near you. You don't have to, but I kind of want to see what would happen.

Thanks! AFAIK the mid-deck is configurable for up to 6 seats (3 in the sleep station position) but typically had only 3 configured when a mission had 7 crew (4 on flight deck). Regardless, I don't think this model has nearly enough room for those 3 extra seats :(
i want to make the iss on minifigure scale one day. but by the time that i have enough bricks/money the iss probably doesn't excist anymore... where do you get all your bricks from?
there are many ways to get parts in addition to what i have on hand already: bricklink is a major source, but as a member of a LUG we do drafts and also have access to Lugbulk.
This is awesome, would you ever consider doing an X-71 from Armageddon?

about half the bricks were already in my collection. i bought the SaturnV set for white curved slopes and other misc parts. the rest was acquired via the used brick marketplace bricklink.com

yes, if you check my hubble video, it contains a partially completed SRB.
Who cares if the oms motors are to big. This model is still probably the best out there.

Is there a way to have this have instructions. I would love to build this from brinklink pieces no matter what the cost
If there was enough demand maybe I would produce instructions for the entire model. It would require quite a time investment. In addition there are a couple of areas that are being redesigned for structural integrity, so it would have to wait anyway. I have considered doing instructions for for just the nose section (everything forward of the payload bay).
but you can buy liquid glue and put that glue in all the pieces, to make the cpace shuttle more strong

How big is this in like feet or something? Just wondering because I built a little shuttle and it might be the same size as this one.but I'm not entirely sure

how did you design this? asking for a friend.
I overlayed elevations of the orbiter with a grid at the appropriate spacing, using paint.net, so that I could determine the required brick and plate positions. The choice of grid size was based on the brick-built hatch which was done first. I also used many reference photos to figure out various contours.

hi David, glad you like it! sorry, the model is not for sale, and unfortunately the time and cost to source the thousands of parts, assemble, package and ship would be exorbitant... not something I'm prepared to do at this time.
Tbh, i'd internally glue all non-moving parts on this together.
blasphemy :) also, if I'd done that I could not take it apart to make improvements.
Eh, true. Then i'd keep it in a sealed glass case, in an underground cement bunker.

@@celilol82 you could source bricks from the used marketplace, or direct from LEGO (e.g. pick-a-brick). it's a painstaking process. the current model relies a few old parts that are no longer made so some of the refinements include redesigning to eliminate those dependencies.

@@michaelp9061 Some people have expressed interest. I've considered selling instructions once the design is refined. As for complete kits, that will not happen, the time required to source, count, package, and ship parts would make it too cost prohibitive.
SpaceflightBricks agreed. The for an average person getting the parts needed is nearly impossible. If one day lego decides to release your design do you get royalties? I hope you do cuz I have watched the video again and again and saying to myself this is the way it should be made.

not really: theirs is half the size, and I don't think they used any of my original ideas.
