    To clarify: The 50-minute chrome sticker application time was on a live stream with hundreds of viewers and I was trying to some degree to show what I was doing in lighting optimized for viewers, not me, while also narrating my thoughts & actions. Alone with full concentration surely would have been quicker.

    LEGO have a guide to the best way of applying stickers on their customer service page it is as follows:
    Our designers have shared this trick for applying decals: lightly spray a window cleaner on the surface of the parts to be decorated. This will allow you to adjust the decal without damaging it. Once you have the decal in the right place, use a flat edge to smooth out any bubbles and let it dry.
    I haven't yet tried this method of applying stickers so don't know how well it works or what the best cleaning solution to use is. This is coming straight from the LEGO website so I imagine it doesn't do any damage to parts of stickers but I would recommend trying it on less important stickers to practice before moving on to the more important ones.
    I just wish they put this in the instruction manuals because so many people don't know about this technique, including me until quite recently.

    • @millenniumf1138
      @millenniumf1138 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This advice is sound. I build filtration units and we use exactly the same technique on our decals. It really works well to make application a breeze, and our decals outsize the largest Lego sets.

    • @felanguicle
      @felanguicle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sticker application is a seriously tricky thing to get right, but definitely worth taking time to perfect.
      Having bought lots of second-hand LEGO sets with badly applied stickers, I've found the method of using tweezers to align the corners and keeping a consistent margin from one side works best for me.
      If any stickers are askew, you can use a hairdryer on low/medium heat to soften the glue and move the sticker using the above method, without causing too much damage.

    • @pance_9912
      @pance_9912 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've used this sticker technique on both Ninjago City and Ninjago City Gardens (was simply never interested in Docks), and I'd vouch for it 100%. It doesn't affect the adhesive in any way, and it was an absolute godsend when it came to the clear-backed stickers: making sure they were on right with no bubbles was essential, and this method did the trick.

    Hey Jang, this is, literally, the 5th time I have watched this review. The key difference this time, however, is that this time I had my very Discovery right next to me, I completed it last night. Having watched the launch of Columbia on TV as a 7-year old, I have been totally captivated the Space Shuttle program my whole life. I was gutted when the program was cancelled. But the joy in finally owning this piece, and Hubble to boot, it incredible. And the building experience, wow, probably my best ever. I am a serious AFOL, almost exclusively Star Wars, with the NASA Idea/Creator sets a close second. I have basically all the major Star Wars UCS and Master Builder sets, barring the hysterically priced Star Destroyer and Millenium Falcon. With that for context, this is for sure my favourite set to own and build to date. With the Tantive IV, Saturn V, Mos Eisley Cantina and Lunar Module filling out the Top 5. Anyway, this comment is already far longer than originally intended. Thanks for all you do for the Lego Community

    Great review as always.
    For applying this big silver stickers on curved surface I would definitely recommend Wet Application Method, using Water (500-800ml) + Baby Shampoo(5ml) solution. This combo is commonly used for application of all sorts of Vinyl on other items, MTB/road bikes, cars, etc. It worked great on this build, you have some time to adjust stickers, just wipe excess water with microfiber cloth and you are done. I finish this portion of the build, using this wet method fairly quickly, no stress or fear of applying stickers crooked.

    Very well done. I loved your commentary and was very much looking forward to what you had to say about this set. This is one AMAZING set! I have always wanted a large, detailed model of the Space Shuttle and this fits the bill Lego or purpose built model. Plus, you add all the play features, the sturdiness of the entire build and that phenomenal Hubble Space Telescope and I am more than satisfied with it. Work has been extremely busy so no time to puy my Shuttle together yet, but even having the box on display is pretty impressive. Again I am just in awe of how this set turned out. With the accuracy of this Space Shuttle and the previous Lego ISS, Lego Lunar Lander and Lego Saturn V, as display pieces on your shelf, Lego is giving purpose built models a run for their money. BTW I am not even bothered by the slight variation in the white color of the bricks because the outside of the actual Space Shuttle is made up of those individual tiles and for me this just adds to some bonus authenticity because not all those tiles match exactly as well especially the ones that where replaced. Thanks and well done.

    Very cool design. I wish I could buy this set! But right now I have to pick and chose. and I already have the Saturn V and that set is a lot closer to my heart.
    As a Canadian I think Lego could have included an extra printed peace for the Canadarm :( I know it they would not put on a small set like the ISS but this set is big enough that it could have been done and many Canadians are now moding their sets with a sticker or 3rd party part.

    I had to buy a special magnifier with light to do stickers because my eyes don't work as well as they used to, so sticker pain/dread is real. OTOH, I have had good luck with cutting stickers off the sheet with their backing still attached. This has allowed me to pre-position the sticker and just peel the backing off as I go. It looks like the this would work with the silver ones for sure.

    I keep the Hubble for mine displayed rising out of the cargo bay with the Canada arm, but I also put the full solar panels on it cause they don't store well. (it wasn't possible in reality, but it looks awesome) The "rolled" panels just sit loose in the bay. I don't enjoy the leftover Hubble stand and side part that just lay around. I thought they could have made the Hubble stand convert to the cargo bay stand without much fuss.
    This set and the Saturn V are my two all time favorite LEGO sets, for their incredible design and play features that enhance the experience of owning and talking about them with others. I very much hope we get more NASA space vehicles in the future. The IDEAS set of the various space probes is very attractive!

    I love this set. If you use a gray 1x2 plate w/horizontal clip and a couple extra pieces from the set you can make a very realistic Canadarm spacewalk apparatus for a minifig to service the Hubble just like STS-61 (minus it not being the Endevour) but still wicked cool. Scaling is close enough to display IMO

    Very nice set and review.
    I think many people who will buy that set would be NASA fans and I suppose they aren't familiar with sticker application which will be a big challenge, even an impossible task, there will be a lot of mistakes done on many of those sets.
    Jangbricks is very good at applying them and I learned a lot from his videos about the art of sticker application, it is now one of my favorite thing to do on a lego set because everybody can easily build a set following the instructions but the stickers is where you can be involve the most and even having a better looking model than Lego does suggest.

    I have this in my backlog and can’t wait to build it. Side note, having seen the Space Shuttle Discovery in person at the Smithsonian Annex near Dulles in DC, I can say that the variance in whites actually makes the Lego version even closer to the real deal then you realize. Looking at the real Discovery you can see a variety of shades of whites and blacks across its surface.

      Yeah that's a cool "accuracy" coincidence if you can think of it that way, but it's not in any way intentional and those same pieces are used in every other set that is definitely not supposed to have any variation. LEGO openly promises "only the best" in materials & production and charges absolute premium prices for their boxes of plastic parts so I can't excuse consistent inconsistency like that.

      I agree with everything you just said.....My 2020 Architecture Whitehouse has some of those same issues with white pieces being off shade compared to others.

    Great subject for lego.looks great.Stickers are not an issue for myself.Having built static models and r/c cars for a long time,I have applied much more difficult decals.Just take your time,and you will get there

    I didn't bother with the reflective stickers. Them not being 100% aligned would bother me more than not having them at all.

    I absolutely want this set. I have the Ideas Saturn V, the Creator Expert Lunar Lander, and the Ideas International Space Station (unfortunately, I don't have the Women of NASA set).
    This set would be an amazing addition to the overall display, representing some of the biggest milestones in Astronomy.

    This set is astronomical (pun intended), but man I don't have the space (this one is unintended) for such a huge display piece.

      Shikhar Jayswal annoying like he said lol but the rest of the build was great. Probs took me half an hour to apply the stickers.
