According to Napoleon Bonaparte, the UK is a nation of shopkeepers. With that in mind, for this This Is Your Life sting, Michael is back on the cobbles of Weatherfield, hunting down one of the most iconic shopkeepers in the nation's TV history.
In a hilarious opening scene, Corrie legends Sally Webster (played by Sally Dynevor) and Fred Elliott (the late, great John Savident) set the stage for the sting. But as Fred might say, "It’s not-I say-it’s not me!” Nor is it Maud Grimes (Elizabeth Bradley), whom Fred humorously blames for not being in the spotlight for this one.
The true recipient of the big red book is someone whose legacy looms large in Weatherfield’s business community. First gracing the famous cobbles 36 years before this sting as a humble postal worker, he rose to prominence as the face of the Corner Shop long before its current owner, Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin).
At the time of this sting, he had recently returned to Corrie after a real-life health scare. On-screen, his character had been awarded an OBE for services to local government, held the title of Mayor of Weatherfield twice, and was beloved by the community. And while Sally Webster herself has served as Mayor, this TIYL isn’t about her either.
So, sit back and enjoy as Michael once again takes a risk by interrupting an actor mid-flow to surprise Bryan Mosley-better known to us all as the iconic Alf Roberts, OBE-with the Big Red Book
