Used to work in this mall at a now closed store. Haven't been inside MM in years and was surprised at how many empty stores there are. Sears, Pennys and Macys were big end stores too. Always crowded. The decorations were always nice. It is a shame to see the demise of a once vibrant shopping area. Thank you for filming this.
KYw news radio in Philadelphia used to announce that there were no parking spaces in the Montgomery Mall at the height of the Christmas season during the 1980s. This is a sobering sight.
That was my stomping ground. So many hours walking that mall. It's come full circle. The mall that killed main st Lansdale is now dead and main street is back! Thanks for taking me back Cap
As a kid in the 80s, I used to go here almost every weekend with my Big Sister who lived in North Wales at the time. My favorite store there was a little corner hobby shop named "One-Stop Hobbies". Anyone else remember that store? Anyway, just wanted to thank you for walk down memory lane, haven't been here since I was little! God Bless!
This is so sad. So many memories. Thank you for documenting all of this. I wish I had thought to take videos of what this mall was like on the weekends 20+ yrs ago. It was hustling and bustling. And TGI Fridays would have a 2+ hrs wait on Saturdays
@@johnprim yep I met my wife at Franklin Mills 49th St., Galleria, my old gum i spit out is still stuck on the sidewalk before you enter Burlington Coat Factory
This is sad Captain. It reminds me of the Granite Run Mall 5 or so years ago during Christmas. I remember a vacant space with a sign that read “When I grow up I want to be a restaurant” So depressing! Another victim of online shopping, IE Amazon like you said.
It's a crime what's happening to malls all across the area. I'm not really into shopping, but I always liked going to the malls. A piece of Americana lost.
Im surprised the escalators were running last time i was there they were shut off. I think Dicks and Walgreens are the only 2 still keeping that place a float
That’s the old Echelon Mall near the Ashland speedline station in South Jersey. That’s the mall I go to for Boscov’s. It’s called Voorhees Town Center now. I call it Echelon still.
Where I’m from in the Portland Oregon area we’ve got a mall that is absolutely thriving!! Two hours ago my wife and I were there and their was probably 10 thousand people there Christmas shopping. It’s called Washington Square . I have no idea what happened to these other malls around the country but this one’s doing great.
It's not just Amazon killing certain types of retail. Certain categories destroyed others. Technology Smartphones(over a thousand for many),air buds,iPads, Xbox, playstation and games, huge tvs. This items took a huge bite out other type retail. Amazon is a big part as well. For me I sold men's casual clothing n footwear. I couldn't compete with cheap imports like old navy,H n M etc. They Target...they would be selling stuff for what I paid for it. Fyi it's been announced that Amazon will be selling cars Hyundai soon. That will destroy dealerships and there are tons of jobs and other businesses attached to it. People want the cheapest price. Sadly it has dire consequences.
Simon is the mall owner who owns jc penny. They also own forever 21,Aeropostale,brooks brothers and Lucky brand. They are only putting off the evitable JC Penny will be kaput sooner than later and all malls but a select few A+ great ones will shutter. When you see non chain stores that's desperation. You can get into these bad malls for next to nothing in rent these days. The irony is between 2004-2010 malls wouldn't listen to pleas from established mom n pop stores to lower our rents because businesses was dropping so much. They wouldn't budge so many of us were forced to close or just pull out over night if we still had a lease. By 2013 they were begging for us to return because the big chains were downsizing. They killed the golden goose. We had 4 mall operations for close to or over 25years. They rather you close than reduce your rent. So honestly they have it coming.
I think that store you thought was a Suncoast video was really a Champs Sports. I ran that store for a few months before I got promoted to Plymouth Meeting Mall. I'm sure the store there is closed as well.
I lived on Verree Rd, move out. Week later the Cap does a vlog there. Live in Lansdale go shopping at this mall - the move away from there. a week later the Cap does a vlog
That's a fantastic toque you're wearing Jon. I have a similar one. I have a bunch of them from over the years. They're not very popular around here though. All you find around here is Leafs, Sens, Habs and the occasional Bruins or Red Wings. Welcome to small-town Canada. 🫡
Santa was so nice this year, sour Santa in past years didn’t help. Mainly we just go for Santa or Easter Bunny but that’s like two visits a year. I did walk here when weather was bad but now it’s so dead I don’t feel safe alone there anymore which is sad, I’ll only go with other adults. I’ve been followed in the parking lot before, you have to be careful.
I was at that mall with my dad. Even the food court was empty and we were there on a Saturday afternoon around 12pm. is it just me or does every mall have a Victoria secret.
Close to my house....wish I had known you would have been here - would have stopped by. This mall, sadly, has seen better days due to online shopping and strip malls in the area IMO. Anyway, thanks for the tour. Keep it going!!!!
Mall activity varies greatly from town to town. The Montgomery Mall has had funding problems for years. The neighborhood has a lot of folks at the fringe with little discretionary income to spare.
I was an assistant manager at the Champs Sports around 2002-05. It was a lively mall then and a fun place to work. It must be awful working here now. Amazon sucks but sometimes I use it cuz its just so damn convenient.
Sad. Spent a lot of time at that mall growing up, can’t believe how bad it is. Was always busy back then. Let alone Amazon, outlets really killed the malls. They are just outdoor malls, no longer discount stores like the outlets used to be known for.
Yes the Gen X and millennials have put them out of biz. They are too busy to go to the mall and now do the quick shopping on line…….. for everything even diapers delivered, everything.
It looks like a beautiful mall. Hopefully someday people will want to come out of their houses again like they do in Europe. Sitting on your butt online just isn't healthy.
This is too 😞 I live in Montgomery County and when I see this it makes me cringe. The economy is really bad and it shows in the retail industry. I can’t believe all these stores are closed thought I would never see this happen. Sad 😞
Cap sounds like a yutz from NE Philly. No offense. LOL. I live right down the street from the MM and I can confirm it’s fuckin’ dead. It went bankrupt in 2021 or 2022 and the owner just gave it back to the bank and walked away. The bank auctioned it off for a fraction of what was owed on it so the back took an huge loss. Some dope bought it and is trying to make it succeed as Mall. He sold off the Wegman’s that is adjacent to the mall to raise money. How it exists as a mall is mystery. It’s so pathetic. I heard the govt wants to demolish it and put up section 8 apartments! Yipes! There goes the neighborhood!
I’m from KoP, I never knew this even existed, looks like this is in North Wales? I first thought you meant Montgomeryville Mall😆Anyway, I was up in August and went to KoP mall, went into the Court section, it was empty! It’s been a long time since I’ve been in there, it’s so sad to see. When I was a teenager I basically lived at the mall.

Hey, Cap! You're right across the street from my house!👋
"Hey, Hun, let's get married at that dead mall"!! That alone is why I subscribed, lol. Go Birds!
fridays from 2010-2013 was so iconic in this mall for any kid in middle school
Aaw i remember this mall stayed packed full house espically holiday time .The times have changed the malls were the place to be when i was coming up.
“I think we’re alone now”, how appropriate. Alone in the dead mall.

Way more than just Amazon but for it's played a huge part
I visited the Montgomery Mall once for a school performance in 2001. We lived in Audubon, so King of Prussia was our preferred mall.
Oh I forgot to say that one of the old Howard Stern caller Captain Janks is from like 3 miles down the road.
Hey PHILLY CAPTAIN great video at the Montgomery Mall in North Wales, Pa around the Christmas holiday season..Enjoy on & TOODLES

There are too many malls in the Philly area. We have a few that are still doing extremely well, like King of Prussia Mall.
The Captain Christmas ....... There We Were !!!!!!!!!!!
You should check out the Q mart which is about 20 minutes from this mall.
Is the Q mart still a thing? I bought my first Chinese Star at the Q mart and took it to school and got caught 😅
@@TheGnomestead yup! It’s better than ever now. Clean and a lot of AWESOME stores. Plus you are supporting small business. Best beef jerky as well.

Same problem everywhere.
The rent for a store is so sky high it drives those businesses away
I used to manage the Disney Store in there for years until it closed.
It was never a very busy mall but definitely not as pathetic as it is now.
Hay Philly Captain! Could you please do a walk of the Berlin farmers market, aka the auction?
I was just there a few months ago. I hadn't been there in years and I got some great stuff.
This reminds me of the Echelon Mall in Voorhees, near me. Other than Boscov’s and a handful of stores, it’s a dead mall. Rather sad.

Thats not true. West of the mall is pretty beat but east and south are affluent.
That’s untrue. It depends which direction from the mall. The immediate neighborhood with single family homes is upper middle class.
