Welcome to Linux, Astrid. Linux got me about 20 years ago, when I saw that this OS is crazy modular. It can be made into whatever you want it to be. It just works, no strings attached.
yeah issue now is they made gaming on linux possible. Honestly I've been getting bored of gaming have been since a teen but I don't enjoy as much anymore, OW2 is fun for 2 matches then I get off. I maybe play that game 2 a week at maximum. Honestly learning about linux and getting better at it is way more fun and rewarding. This is another nerd speaking haha.
As a full time Linux user, it makes me so happy to see someone else also talk positively about Linux! I love Linux too! That freedom, liberty, open source, nothing beats that! :)

start off by dual booting, install ubuntu or some other beginner-friendly linux distro on another drive or partition and have fun! As long as you've got the interest for learning a whole different operating system, you'll do just fine!
You're getting a lot of advice to dual boot. I do not recommend this. I recommend a dedicated Linux machine. I would recommend finding a machine that's older, like what you or a family member just upgraded from, and try daily driving. Windows has an unfortunate habit of messing up the boot config for other OSes. Don't go too old doing this, hardware is always hardware, and Linux definitely benefits from better hardware. But I think you'll have less frustration this way than dual boot.
yoo this is so interesting!! i've never really considered moving away from windows cause i don't know much about computers, but i'm getting a new PC soon and i'd love to play around with it and make it my own. so i'll definitely be looking into linux!
I'd recommend QEMU/KVM with the virt-manager interface over virtual box, it is far more performant since it runs in the kernel. The setup takes a few minutes though.

you just described my decent into linux to a T. I used a little ubuntu in college in a virtual machine, totally forgot about it. Then with windows 7/8/8.1 becoming unsupported on top of other frustrations with windows, I was suggested linux in a comment, and then suddenly I was reading all these linux articles learning more about it. Linux and open source ideologically spoke to me too, it re-lit my joy in tinkering with computer things. I installed linux mint onto the PC I built this past winter, no windows, just to force myself to daily drive. It's so nice! I'm thinking about which old laptop of mine I can wipe to distro-hop, and working on a plan to switch all my personal computers to some flavor of linux. I'm all in as well! Also, I like your website! Very fun looking :)
The one thing I've noticed the most about linux coming from windows, is the fact that answers to problems and bugs are more readily available and more reliable. You can actually tinker with your machine and apply and test fixes. With windows I feel like my options are to either live with the problem (no solutions to be found online) or completely reinstall the operating system. (Lose a bunch of time.)
I have to ask, I LOVE your panel, how did you make the spacing between icons smaller? I've made my panel size 20 but icons still have more spacing than you do.
debian gang debian gang!!! the only thing that makes debian less beginner friendly is the rtfm philosophy when i installed debian for some reason it installed the spanish and italian user's manual instead of the english one i decided to use linux for the customisation that it allows! only issues i have had so far is external hardware support (i can't transfer files to my kindle and my pen tablet won't work without a driver that doesn't come in the debian repo and the website looks hella dodgy) personally i like xfce because of how insanely fast it is on my machine
Well, they're all basically Linux for servers plus video, audio, and a desktop environment. I'm on Debian with just xserver, a window manager, and pipewire. Beautiful...
I duel booted Linux on my MacBook to have a way to play game. I booted off a USB drive, which was nice cause it was portable and I could boot off any computer. But ended up not being a good idea since using a USB drive meant that the read/write time was slow
Somebody has put the Android version of Minecraft Bedrock on Linux, so somebody could probably put the Android version or Roblox on Linux, either that or you can use Waydroid, dual boot Windows, or use a Windows VM with GPU passthrough.
hmm yeah i just hate the tracking shit in windows and like idk it just kinda feels gross idk. i dont care about open source or whatever that much like i prefer using it when avaliable and for some stuff its way better and i like that theres more like random apps i feel like like simple small open source stuff. idk that sort of stuff is harder to find on windows.
I guess the system just isn't my usual approach to OS, but it's nice to see someone going through it talking like a regular person, much easier to digest. Quite interesting. Also kdenlive? Never heard of that, thanks, been looking for a better opensource video editor.
yippee yay wahoo i love linux, would you consider setting up a lil irc or matrix channel for people to chat in? could be fun also, most games with problematic anticheat will detect if they're running in a vm and complain about it, fortnite especially is notorious for it iirc, so youd probably just be better booting windows for those games

Some day I will come back to Linux again. I've been using Arch as a daily more than 1.5y, but few weeks ago I've moved back to Windows.. I love Linux and KDE as a DE, but constantly fixing issues after updates just to play with friends is exhausting. There's always something that blocks you to enjoy the system. (NVIDIA or Kernel or gamescope or wine...). I do play Star Citizen and League of Legends most of the time and time to time I check the new games. There's always something not working... again and again..
goddamn, Im right now considering of ordering a new SSD and install Arch onto it and daily drive it while also having left my second SSD with Windows But I also have an Nvidia GPU specifically the RTX 2060 and Ive also heard Nvidia on Linux sucks, honestly considering getting the RX 5700XT at some point so far im gonna try and install Arch onto my 64G USB tomorrow and see
@@hyperkun Go for it. I have an older refurbished RX 550, yes, it's a way older GPU, but due to the nature of AMD, the open-source drivers and Mesa built in, runs out of the box fine. I'm sure it's gonna be the case for that RX 5700 XT as well.

Easier to guarantee privacy and security as well as to control every aspect of your computer. If you use Windows there's no guarantee on privacy or security right from the start and you won't know everything that runs on your system.
@@anon_y_mousseLinux also guarantees you something Windows doesn't: unconditional ownership of your computer. No need to sign in to your Microsoft account to use the hardware you pay for. But hey, I'm biased as someone who hasn't touched Windows on a personal computer for around two years. Don't take my word for it.
I guess if you don't want to use windows 11 then linux may be your only choice. I mean you could continue using windows 10 after the end of support date but you won't get security updates and stuff.
If you love linux, you'll need to do at least an Arch install, if not a Gentoo/LFS, so you can understand how things work at a lower level. Brodie Robertson did an LFS stream if you want to watch instead of compile.
the safe open source software argument isn't holding up that well after the .xz backdoor, but don't get me wrong I still love linux, my only current concern is that my primary computer is a macbook pro 2021, and yes I tried asahi linux and daily drove it for like 7 months last year but there were still too many problems and proton also doesn't work (because of the m1), after my macbook is retired I'll probably make the switch to an amd framework-labtop, and go linux full time.
Actually it is holding yup better every day, that's exactly how open-source works, that's the old "test based vs obfuscation based" argument, i will go even further: How fast it was solved shows exactly why you should use OSS. I don't know where you get this idea from but PUBLIC codes have way more PUBLIC vulnerabilities and they have way more PUBLIC power in order to solve it. In 3 days everything was back to normal, there was no damage at all AND KB5034441 still there.
Because it's open source the exploit was caught fairly quickly. If it had happened with closed source then no one would have known about it for months, if at all. Since you can't audit closed source, there's no way to know for certain that there aren't multiple exploits already. Come to think of it, that might explain why so many people say they get better performance when they switch to Linux.
When Linux touches your heart, it stays there forever.
...The longing of "I want my computer to belong to me" is too strong.

And I love the fact that I can get a laptop from 2006 to run about as well as a chromebook from today, while being... well.. a laptop from 2006!!
I have to ask, I LOVE your panel, how did you make the spacing between icons smaller? I've made my panel size 20 but icons still have more spacing than you do.
my uni makes us write our cs exams in linux and it’s an absolute nightmare (but tbf it might be because the version is so old)
debian gang debian gang!!!
the only thing that makes debian less beginner friendly is the rtfm philosophy
when i installed debian for some reason it installed the spanish and italian user's manual instead of the english one
i decided to use linux for the customisation that it allows! only issues i have had so far is external hardware support (i can't transfer files to my kindle and my pen tablet won't work without a driver that doesn't come in the debian repo and the website looks hella dodgy)
personally i like xfce because of how insanely fast it is on my machine
would love to hear you talk abt running linux for servers, tried setting one up a few weeks ago and wanted to tear my eyes out lol
Somebody has put the Android version of Minecraft Bedrock on Linux, so somebody could probably put the Android version or Roblox on Linux, either that or you can use Waydroid, dual boot Windows, or use a Windows VM with GPU passthrough.
hmm yeah i just hate the tracking shit in windows and like idk it just kinda feels gross idk. i dont care about open source or whatever that much like i prefer using it when avaliable and for some stuff its way better and i like that theres more like random apps i feel like like simple small open source stuff. idk that sort of stuff is harder to find on windows.
how did you configure your kde-plasma? It's beautiful
on my neofetch on my website (insect.christmas/philosophy) you can see some configuration options I think. It's a combo of psion, gruvbox and breeze.
As someone who has been using quite a few different flavors of Linux since 2008, welcomw to our silly family.
Also ao envious of your voice NGL 😅
tbh if it wasn't so late at night for me i would switch to linux right this second
I agree w/ all this, unfortunately I went with intel and nvidia (i5 13500K, 4070ti) so it's been a bit challenging with the drivers...
Windows 10's forced updates pushed me into Linux. I've been happy. It is great to just have freedom and control your experience.
I guess the system just isn't my usual approach to OS, but it's nice to see someone going through it talking like a regular person, much easier to digest. Quite interesting. Also kdenlive? Never heard of that, thanks, been looking for a better opensource video editor.
yippee yay wahoo i love linux, would you consider setting up a lil irc or matrix channel for people to chat in? could be fun
also, most games with problematic anticheat will detect if they're running in a vm and complain about it, fortnite especially is notorious for it iirc, so youd probably just be better booting windows for those games
> truuuueee fuuuuuck fortnite
> we actually had an irc channel going for a bit (i think ##insectchristmas on libera but i can't remember), but i haven't tried it in a bit. could be fun. is matrix cool?
@@astridztar ooh I'll hop on that, matrix is ok i think, it's got lots of the stuff discord has over irc like saving chat history, voice chat profile pictures etc but it's all free and open source, i haven't massively gotten into it myself because i don't really know many people on there but it's pretty cool from what I've used of it
it's based on the whole activitypub thing mastodon uses if you're into that
@@astridztar i've tried to respond to this comment twice now and every time i do it youtube deletes my comment
anyway, will check out the irc! matrix is pretty cool, it's alot like discord but free and open source and selfhosted and not bloated, it's on the activitypub thing mastodon uses if you're into that
i haven't found too many cool people on there though, so i've not been on it too much
@astridztar i've tried to respond to this comment 3 times now and every time i do it youtube deletes my comment

it's ok, it's like discord but free, opensource, self hosted etc, it's a little bit jank but it isn't too bad and it's on the activitypub stuff mastodon uses if you're into that, haven't explored public servers too much so haven't found too many cool people on there (also, youtube keeps deleting my comments whenever i try to reply to you for whatever reason?) did just join the irc and there's nobody else in there unfortunately :c
adjust your libreoffice icons to work with a dark theme please, there is an option to set them to breeze-dark for example, should work just fine.
thank you, i was getting annoyed about that too
might try using that KDE editor since premiere fucking kills my ram, cool video.
how did you get curse forge to work on linux?
i remember my first time..
i was sitting chilling gaming on my w i n d o w s laptop
and then my uncle came in, and said "hey, why dont you use linux" i responded "whats linux"
then it began, he recommended me linux mint, so i dual booted it with w11, booted into it and said "man that shit is dope"
now i use arch (btw)
u have a 7900 xt and still use a 1080p monitor?
I haven't tried switching to Linux since well before Proton existed. The death of Win10 might finally be my reason to go back... hmm
checked my top 100 Steam games (by hours played) on ProtonDB, only 2 were below Gold... holy shit
Show me how can I play Sea of Thieves or Valorant on Linux if my friends want to play with me. That's the only thing that holds me back from Linux.
those glittery stars look good on your firefox dude!
thx bro
>Libre Office, Audacity, VLC
amazing bait
hahahahahahah
Real Good video you posted. Allot of Linux users become Linux admins out in the real world. A person can make a good living doing that.
I really wanna switch to Linux but I use apps and hardware that is impossible to run on Linux so, no :(
Been using Linux since 1994. Seeing that Microsoft is on the board of directors of The Linux Foundation, I'm worried MS may mess Linux up somehow.
holy shit girl your specs are fucking baller fr fr
Why most hate it, just seeing that terminal window makes most OSX and Windows users throw up.
windows users throwing up in trash cans all day as they access onedrive
Welcome aboard.
Do u have a video out how to install cinnamon?
just like u do with other desktop environment i suppose just search on internet the package name and install depending on ur distro
Oh... Nvidia... Yeah i know your pain bro
goddamn, Im right now considering of ordering a new SSD and install Arch onto it and daily drive it while also having left my second SSD with Windows
But I also have an Nvidia GPU specifically the RTX 2060 and Ive also heard Nvidia on Linux sucks, honestly considering getting the RX 5700XT at some point
so far im gonna try and install Arch onto my 64G USB tomorrow and see
@@hyperkun Go for it. I have an older refurbished RX 550, yes, it's a way older GPU, but due to the nature of AMD, the open-source drivers and Mesa built in, runs out of the box fine. I'm sure it's gonna be the case for that RX 5700 XT as well.
Debian should license this video as an ad to get Windows users to switch, it made me download Debian xD
omg we have the same overwatch pfp
hell to the yeah i love linux
how many times did you say "Fucking"🤣
I had a boss once that couldn't say two sentences w/o using the f'n word!
POKEMON HOME SCREEN YES I LOVE POKEMON
ur site's so pretty!
Gang Gang homie!! I use EndevourOS
davinci resolve have linux support imo its better than kdenlive but its not oss and mpv is better and lighter than vlc its also more closer to the ideology of FOSS than vlc imo
I have seen alot of people move to mastodon instead of discord. Can't say I am a fan though.
?
Mastodon isn't a discord replacement. You sure you don't mean matrix?
@@deviantsemicolon618 , I cannot compare and contrast the two but only mention what I have been told. When I asked a youtuber why they did not have discord, they replied... "I opted to utilize mastodon for messaging functions because it is open source".
discord is pain.
google keeps deleting me post. 😡 I posted a compliment, but it seems that google don't like me complimenting people. 😡
I've been running Windows my whole life but recently I'm feeling more and more compelled to switch over to Linux. If it had HDR support and some of the games I play didn't have awful anti cheat I would switch over in a heartbeat.
I can confidently say as someone working in IT though: fuck microsoft
Thanks
btw perfect video
i love linux. Linux is awesome, and so is this video! ❤🎉🤩😍😎
I love it too
As a smooth brained, doesn’t really know anything about computers, casual windows user, why should I switch to Linux? She’s selling me something I know nothing about, could someone please dumb it down for me?
Easier to guarantee privacy and security as well as to control every aspect of your computer. If you use Windows there's no guarantee on privacy or security right from the start and you won't know everything that runs on your system.
@@anon_y_mousseLinux also guarantees you something Windows doesn't: unconditional ownership of your computer. No need to sign in to your Microsoft account to use the hardware you pay for.
But hey, I'm biased as someone who hasn't touched Windows on a personal computer for around two years. Don't take my word for it.
@@deviantsemicolon618 I started using it around 25 years ago, went exclusive 20 years ago and never looked back.
I guess if you don't want to use windows 11 then linux may be your only choice. I mean you could continue using windows 10 after the end of support date but you won't get security updates and stuff.
i liked this at the abit at ahah lol
lunix is just awesome
hey you should change your name to astrobased
OpenSuse Ftw
openSUSSY
bruh 5:30
before saying that, fix your icon theme if you're doing a video ;)
If you love linux, you'll need to do at least an Arch install, if not a Gentoo/LFS, so you can understand how things work at a lower level. Brodie Robertson did an LFS stream if you want to watch instead of compile.
debian gang yayaya
debian gnag :3
8 gb / 128gb
btw i love your website
nice vid
Linux
Based elaine fan
ok am switchi g u convinced me madame astrid now i just need 2 find a cool looking distro (am a picky bitch)
I tried linux mint recently and it was a struggle, i was confused af xD
Good for you for have the opposite exprience of me ^^
Wait you use Linux?? Niceee
based
this might be aztro
it's actually aztrosist wtf
the safe open source software argument isn't holding up that well after the .xz backdoor, but don't get me wrong I still love linux, my only current concern is that my primary computer is a macbook pro 2021, and yes I tried asahi linux and daily drove it for like 7 months last year but there were still too many problems and proton also doesn't work (because of the m1), after my macbook is retired I'll probably make the switch to an amd framework-labtop, and go linux full time.
Come to think of it, that might explain why so many people say they get better performance when they switch to Linux.
xz is only insecure in ssh, plus virtually all servers use linux as it's open source model has made it out-compete the rest
A single exploit that was patched quickly isn't the argument against open source software you think it is.
GNU/Linux is the first step on the path to BSD
I would love to contradict you... But now my main computer is a FreeBSD goddammit
i like the gnu gpl too much
libre software is better and tastier than open source
dude need a fucking counter
