  • This line is a 45mm gauge electrified garden tramway located in suburban Melbourne, built by Alexander Jamieson. In this video we follow a Bendigo Birney tram from the depot out to Grasslands terminus, and back as far as the waterfall. It was a bit of an eventful trip as you will see! For heaps more videos of this line, visit Alexander's channel here: / @melbournesparks3828

    What an amazingly long tramway. How long is the route? Are you using 12 volt supply or a much higher voltage to combat line losses. I presume you can get access for emergencies in those long tunnels.

      The overhead is 32v, which is reduced to 12v on board. Tunnel No.2 has an access hatch in the middle, and has certainly been used a few times! I'm not sure what the overall length is, but you can ask more questions directly to Alexander who built the line, his channel is here: th-cam.com/channels/US5FZ5EpoLrjbQNIWIOb8g.html

    Are there actual overhead switches for the trolley pantographs?

    • @Taitset
      @Taitset  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, like most real operations the pole just follows the path of the tram, which leads it onto the correct wire. Generally speaking only trolleybusses need actual switches in the overhead, as their paths are less predictable.

    wait... is the line enegized? i though the rails were the ones who gave power to the trains...

      Some people use track power, some people use battery power - this line uses overhead power! Returning via the track of course like on the real thing.

      It's modified from a US prototype RTR model. Follow the link in the description to Alexander's channel if you want to know more.

    What is that overhead at 0:36?

      Not quite sure, it's a shaft from some piece of machinery.

    Superb tramway, but can't help feeling that a little bit of pruning now and again
    would not come amiss, Don't rely on chickens all the time.

      I generally like the overgrown look, but in some places I am inclined to agree with you.
