I was wondering how you managed to communicate though? As a fellow social "anxietist" I wanted to ask if you fared well by just speaking English or did you have to whip out the translator from time to time?
English in the cities you’ll be just fine, also pointing is more than acceptable. You’ll probably become a master at sign language if you stay as long as I did too haha. Only time I ever needed to whip out the translator was in the lesser known areas like Kofu or at the hospital I went to where I had the luck of no one knowing any English lol. I think big tip just in case: download the Japanese keyboard, that came in clutch during my hospital visit lol
