NOMEANSNO old riffs tested out on small Fender Frontman amp with Schecter Tele.

  • Stumbled across an eerily familiar sound while playing through the wee Fender Frontman amp that I rescued from the streets a few weeks back. It was oddly like reuniting with an old friend. Here’s three NMN bits with “that” guitar/amp sound, that I dug out of my distant memory:
    The Day Everything Became Nothing, The Tower, and Rags And Bones.

    Had the pleasure of being in one you bands that supported Nomeansno in Manchester UK in the early 90s, 92 I think. I was drummer for the Slum Turkeys . Great Times. We also supported you in Newport Wales

    My brother sent me this and a few licks in, without seeing the title, I thought, "Hm. That guy's playing these exactly like if he played them a zillion times live." You can see muscle memory right away. Economy of motion. Very nice.

    So cool to see these riffs by themselves. There's so many little touches that I didn't realize made the songs what I really enjoy!

    Thanks Andy this is absolutely wonderful! Nomeansno from your time in the band is my absolute favorite band of all time. I occasionally play the lottery for one reason, so I could afford to send dump truck loads of money to your houses until you agree to play one more show.

    Best most underknown band ever. I have been a fan since the late 80s and been listening ever since, unlike anything, adrenaline inducing raw intensity combined with mind bending, gripping and provocative music and lyrics...especially live.

    Oh, you're actually the dude from the band? Sorry, I didn't know 'til I read the comments. I love Wrong. Great friggin album, that for some reason isn't on Spotify! I didn't immediately recognize the first one, but I knew instantly when you went into "The Tower." And I went "yes!" out loud when I heard you start "Rags and Bones." What a friggn' song. The higher part, that kick-ass chord thing right before the chorus, that has got to be one of the catchiest guitar parts ever. Sorry for not knowing you guys well enough that I recognized your name. I don't know any of your names. But Wrong is a classic. Why the hell is it not on Spotify?? Other stuff by you guys is. Wtf.
    You still sound awesome, btw.

    What amp(s) were you using back then? NMN (especially your era) totally shaped my musical madness. Your sister (I think?) tried to video call you from a show a few years ago where I was wearing the "kill everyone now" shirt that I had bought at a BC show in 89/90. (I'm in Tacoma, WA)

    Sounds killer! Sounds weird to hear these riffs by themselves after hearing the original songs so much. Any chance you could tell me how to get this sound? What settings did you have dialed in? Would love to replicate this sound.

    Nothing short of perfection :) . Just a small question, have you always had humbucker pickups in your Telecasters?

    • @blankfrank07
      @blankfrank07  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks! I played two Telecasters in my time in NMN. My 'main' guitar was a Schecter from the early 80s. That had two Schecter Superock humbuckers. The other Tele that I had was a black mid to late 70s Fender Telecaster Custom that I bought to use as a backup guitar for live shows. It had a neck humbucker and a single coil pickup at the bridge, both original. I swapped out the single coil for a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails. I did use that Tele from time to time live (for instance, when my I broke a string or my Schecter was in the shop) but, to be honest, I never thought it sounded as good as my Schecter did.
      Hope that answers your question!
      Cheers,
      Andy

    Ÿeah I mean the Wright Brothers along with watt/hurley (minutemen) are the most formidable rhythm section of punk/ post modern history HOWEVER Kerr made the early NMN something special....no disrespect or disregard to Holliston and nmn post '91 but it was not youth that made the difference, most consider Kerr Era nmn special for a reason, as well as he was an integral part of the sound and songwriting process, Holliston was basically just filling out the sound and was playing on top of the music as opposed to Kerr being a part of the music, as well as lending energy I just don't think they ever regained again
