      I had a similar experience with a squirrel. Apparently the birdshot just knocked him out, put him in my game bag in the jacket. Me and my buddy were crossing over a tree bridge. It was at that moment the squirrel woke up, I didn't know what the heck was going on, and so I freaked out and fell in the water. The squirrel finally made his way out and jumped off my head to the bank. Lol ended up getting scratch up pretty good, a couple of stitches and a rabbi shot later I learned the valuable lesson of making sure they are in fact dead before I pick them up.

      I’ve had a decapitated rabbit kick hard 45 minutes later (my dog leaves presents on the doorstep... I guess it’s the thought that counts right?), so anyways, a headless zombie rabbit kicking when I picked it up almost made me pee myself, that was almost slightly traumatic. So just an FYI for anyone reading, rabbits will suddenly convulse at random times after dead.
      You can make them drop and slide to a stop instantly with a headshot, but even if you wait 20 minutes (because it did freak me out previously, so I waited), when you pick them up like by the legs even though they didn’t so much as twitch before they will randomly kick hard and flail about (which got that thing tossed like an Olympic thrower like 40 ft in the air followed by my scream as a kid... then waited another 10 minutes and it did it a second time... yeah they just do that). They are dead, just don’t panic (you’ll totally panic, so by that I just mean don’t let people see you, haha!)

And then the duster coat that I found the actual cape on the shoulders that makes a duster coat a duster coat the cape wasn't that long so when it does rain outside and the water goes to whisk away partially runs down the lower small of your back.
    But you are correct sir we live in an age where were more fashion oriented then function oriented.

    Just watched your coat video and subscribed laughing because I just bought a version of that jacket last weekend at an estate sale. I left the matching pants there but I've been craving to grab a shotgun throw it over my arm and walk out for a hike taking whatever game happened to come my way and remember what it was like when my stepdad and his crew came down to camp. I look at those pictures and I'm transported back to a wonderful time. A time when Marbles knives still held an edge, if your old man gave you a few shells they were of the paper hull variety no one had heard of Gore-Tex and your boots were only waterproof if you put enough oil on them or they were rubber bottomed. And where's the hunters survival kit fit in there top shirt pocket in a Prince Albert can. There was as much smoke coming from the hunters as from the campfire. I'm still amazed how many guys killed deer and yet didn't have sent free clothes and an old burled pipe or a stogie was likely riding in their jacket pocket. That jacket has a dark brown blood stain on the cuff along with breakfast grease stains a little egg and the smell of country ham on the sleeve. That game pouch lets you carry a World War II canteen of hot coffee along with a couple sandwiches wrapped in wax paper then wrapped in aluminum foil. That's what that jacket means to me.
    I was thrilled to open up the game pocket and still find feathers from the previous owners hunt along with the plane ticket and matches from both the East Coast Woods and the Midwest Plains in another pocket I found his rubber match safe with waterproof matches and a set of World War II Aviator glasses he must have used for shooting glasses. I took the name on the plane ticket to the internet and found the man's obituary with a picture of him and a little of his history. Now I can take the memory of him and all my other Hunting Buddies along as I continue to write the history of this hunting jacket. Hopefully I will live up to all of these fine men's standards. Thanks for the memory guys . Simon

    Hey I got the brown one you showed off! Picked it up off ebay for about the price you mentioned. Couldn't figure out what the game bag was, glad you explained. Having tried a new shooting jacket it just doesn't hold up to the quality of a jacket made in the 60s for some reason. Mine had twigs and leaves in the pockets so I know it came from a good home lol

    I never did much bird hunting, but there have been many a rabbit and squirrel in the game pouch. Good for warming your hands on a cold winter hunt.

    A hunting jacket with handwarmer pockets and cartridge pockets is pretty standard in the UK. A game pocket not so much but to be honest you're not going to fit more than one pheasant or rabbit or a couple of woodpigeon in there anyway. You need a game bag for that or some string.

    • @srspower
      @srspower 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5
