I vividly remember sitting on my father’s knee when he sang this to me. I also remember crying about the old man dying. Later in life I learned my father was an orphan and had no father, let alone a grandfather to remember. The song still brings me to tears. I remember you Papa.

When I was a small child and woke up with bad dreams, my father would sing this to me to get me back to sleep. I'm an old man now, and never learned the words, but I've never forgotten the tune. You've given me back something that I lost five decades ago.
    Thank you.

I'm glad you found it and that it could bring you comfort. I recently learned that grandfather clocks got their name from this song. All these years I thought it was the other way around!

Actually, my comment was a reference to a horror video game wherein a security guard would have to keep winding up a music box singing to the tune of the Grandfather Clock to keep a haunted marionette at bay. Had to edit my comment after seeing this video again on a bigger screen. I noticed something odd and amusing: It's the _same man_ playing all the instruments! (Through modern video editing.) And I liked how all the musicians are very serious. It does remind me of a time back in the 1960's when the older folk in my extended family in Maine got together and played very old traditional songs with mandolins, fiddles, banjos, etc. I still say this is the best rendition I ever heard of "Grandfather's Clock".
