My old people use to make homes like this dug into the earth. Thermal insulation on three sides from the earth. The front door faced north east to maximise the sun We insulated the inside of the houses with Typha orientalis, commonly known as bulrush or cumbungi (or in my native language raupō). Raupō is a perennial herbaceous plant in the genus Typha. It is native to Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, China and the Russian Far East.
My grandmother was born in a house like this in 1913.

Kind of why these are typically built on a hill side so water naturally flows and doesn't pool... Also helps to extend the "roof" dirt from digging it out to help shed water away.
