Of all the wood grain tutorials I’ve watched, yours seem the most doable. I just stripped 2 cups where I used 3 colors of inks. The cups turned out so dark, the black Jack Daniels decal didn’t show up. I’m going to try your technique with Ranger Caramel. I appreciate the way you keep explaining as you go without extra chit chat. Looking forward to binging on your videos.
So glad you found it helpful! I just released another wood grain video this past Sunday. Be sure to check it out as well.. very similar but I try to explain as I go. Thanks SO much for watching!!! :)
Thanks for this! I did not think this would be a technique I'd struggle with but I just haven't been able to make one I was happy with. I believe your tip on spritzing the brush and how you do the bottom is going to really help me. Thank you!!
Awesome... hang in there! Alcohol inks are pretty forgiving... I know I mention that if you get any runs off to the side it can "ruin" it but you can definitely use the brush and alcohol to work it out. Thanks so much for watching!!
I wanted to do a wood grain, and you would not believe the number of videos I tried and then gave up on because they were either just music and image (I need talking, at least for the actual tutorial bit!) or just... difficult. Thank you for being you! I think I'm confident enough to try it now.
This makes me so happy to hear! This is why I do what I do! Thank you so much for sharing this with me! I really appreciate you watching! I just started a Tumbler group on FB! I would love for you to join… Tumbler Talk with Karen Baskett DIYer
Thanks so much! You can do it Patti...just keep working at it! After I finished filming this video I accidentally knocked the cup over hadn't even had a chance to seal it yet... scratched the inks up pretty bad :( BUT bc alcohol inks are so forgiving I was able to just touch it up and it looks as good as new! About to epoxy it right now!! Just keep that in mind... if you mess up just spray your brush with the 91% alcohol and swipe over it again... and keep on going! :)
I love your videos. The way you talk through things makes them seem so easy to do. Mistakes are a part of how we learn and I love that you include them! 😁 Also a bonus to your videos is no annoying music! 💥
LOL thanks so much! If you turn up the volume there actually is music... hopefully just not annoying! Yes I think mistakes are important and I just try to prevent you from making the same ones. Thanks for watching!
@@karenbaskettdiyer No, its not...😁 Also your voice is "soft" and easy to listen to. I have a prepped white cup just waiting for something...maybe woodgrain! Thanks!
What paint do you use to prep your tumblers? Do you sand before paint or after or not at all? Mine have been cracking under the alcohol ink when I leave the ink to dry🤔
To be honest I’ve only made 1 tumbler in the last 2 years. To answer your questions… sanding is the most important step. Getting that factory coating off so that water sheets off and doesn’t bead up when it hits the surface. I mostly used Rustoleum 2x paint… preferably matte finish. But if your using Crystalac top coat products you have to allow that base coat to gas off for 48 hours. Otherwise it can cause everything to go wrong on down the line.
No I haven’t experienced that before but I have had others say they have. I’ve often wondered if it has to do with the dry time…? Did it happen to you?
Thank you so much for this video…I am making a ‘baseball bat” tumbler that’s is split half wood grain half white with the baseball stitching. I have a few question. Which ink would you use to get that light color that a wood bat has? 9subscribed and liked) Good luck with your channel …great videos! 😊
Thanks so much Lisa! To be honest with you… I had to pack up all my inks and tumbler supplies a few days ago for our big move. I can’t even go look to see what color is what.. lol. I will need to rewatch the video myself to see which ink colors I even used lol my life is crazy right now 🤦♀️
Hi Trisha… I sprayed the brush randomly throughout the whole process. Just sort of when I felt like I needed to spread what was already there or create bigger wood grain texture. The inks are pretty forgiving. Thanks for watching!
I am obsessed with the woodgrain and peekaboo and glitter!!! so easy my 5 year old grandson likes to help
Those are so fun and pretty!!!
Thank goodness! Someone FINALLY said that they use a sealer so the alcohol ink and resin don't resist each other and cause fish eyes. Thank you!
Oh yes sealer for sure!!
Wow the bottom of that one does look realistic 😊WOW I’m impressed!😇
Thanks so much 😊
Great tip on wiggling the brush back and forth! Love your videos, thank you for taking the time to share them.
LOL well... it's true.. wiggle wiggle!! LOL You are so very welcome! I love doing these videos and helping others! Thanks for watching!!!!

Once you spray the clear and is completely dry,say a couple days later can you hand wash the cup with no effects to the clear and inks
THX
I wouldn’t trust just a clear coat. Definitely want to epoxy or if you are a Crystalac user.. use your top coat.
What paint do you use to prep your tumblers? Do you sand before paint or after or not at all? Mine have been cracking under the alcohol ink when I leave the ink to dry🤔

Thx. Have you ever had the ink take on a greenish cast with Rustooleum clear?
No I haven’t experienced that before but I have had others say they have. I’ve often wondered if it has to do with the dry time…? Did it happen to you?
@@karenbaskettdiyer yes.
Sheesh.. that’s a bummer. Sorry to hear that.
Also, can I put a decal directly on the ink or should I seal it and epoxy it first?
You might could put vinyl directly on… I’d just be SUPER careful! You could risk lifting you’re ink and paint though.
Told you watching all your older videos lol. When you added the mod podge did you let it dry before adding the ink?
Oldie but goodie! It was mostly dry if I remember correctly.
Hello!!! What do you use to paint the tumbler first? The white paint
Hi! I used Rustoleum matte white.
Thank You!!!!

How long do you let the sealant dry before continuing?
Are you talking about the spray clear coat? If so.. 48 hours is best. If you talking about the Crystalac you can add a layer every 4 hours. 😊
What did you use to prime the cup? The alcohol ink ate through my primer
I just clean it with Dawn dish soap and sandpaper. Then I base coat it with white Rustoleum spray paint.
@@karenbaskettdiyer if I’m using epoxy do you still recommend spraying it with the clear gloss before epoxying it?
Where do you get your paint brush for this technique
The chip brush is just from lowes. But I believe you might can get them at the dollar store as well.
Do you have to sand the cup before you spray it?
Yes… sorry if I didn’t make that clear. Always prep and sand your tumblers before painting or starting any layers😊
Absolutely beautiful! Did you spray your brush with alcohol before you started? Or was it just on the bottom part? Wasn’t sure if I missed that part.
Hi Trisha… I sprayed the brush randomly throughout the whole process. Just sort of when I felt like I needed to spread what was already there or create bigger wood grain texture. The inks are pretty forgiving. Thanks for watching!

Where do you get the decals
For these I used Cricut design space and cut them.
Where are you getting those little stubby cups from?
I get those from Amazon.
@@karenbaskettdiyer Thank you. Your wood grains are amazing.
@@Funfactsunearthed Thanks SO much!!!!
What did of brush are you using?
It’s called a chip brush. The bristles are pretty firm. You can buy them pretty much anywhere that paint supplies and craft supplies are sold 😊
