When I was a teenager I would go to this great comic book shop in Cleveland. It was run by Tony Isabella who wrote this What If comic. Before it came out, he told a friend of mine and I the plot. (Who knew from spoilers back then.). I will never forget him telling us the dramatic ending with JJJ storming the wedding and Spider-Man having to escape. So cool.
This had to be one of the best example of a Monkey's Paw style wish. Peter got what he wanted, but in the end it came at a terrible and unforeseeable cost. On one level, this was a great story, and it makes you want to see what happens next. On the other hand, why can't poor Peter Parker catch a break?
Same man, same. I love MJ but if Gwen had a chance to survive maybe MJ and Harry could have been a happy couple and the four of them could all still be close...

Robbie and Gwen could get the Fantastic Four involved in reshaping Peter’s public image since he was on good terms with them and they’d be able to protect Aunt May and Gwen. Or maybe Professor X would have been an ally to Peter since he might appear as a very public “mutant” figure. Gwen being an aspiring bio-chemist would be something to work with if she and Professor X did ally and publicly oppose poor treatment of mutants. All Peter’s villains going after him and him losing his dual identity would be a problem though but the fantastic four have the same lifestyle and live comfortably and held romantic relationships during the time this was written. Peter should likely be able to.
I like how Robbie Lay's it in on Jonah how selfish and petty his decision was. Jonah may finally dealt a fatal blow to spider man but not before losing 2 of his best employees and probably lose the respect of his other employees that liked Peter.
This was a great What If issue to pick up back in the day - added bonus that the legendary Gil Kane did the artwork since he also did the artwork on ASM 121 - the original "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" story.
This reminds me of a Spider-man/Carnage comic where he does marry Gwen, but his daughter MayDay Parker who has been infected by the Carnage symbiote, confronts older Peter. She reveals that she hates him because when he was with MJ he found out she got pregnant and he left her and she became homeless. She then finds out that he has a son with Gwen and he becomes Spider-man. That's all I remember but it's a really heavy comic

I feel like if this was the actual main Story we would see an arc or two about Peter as a full on fugitive vigilante and seeing how multiple side characters are affected by it like JJ seeing how the villains are not only going after Peter but people that where close to him too including JJ and his own family, we would see Gwen and Robbie work on trying to help Peter maybe with the help of the fantastic four and a certain really good lawyer and finally maybe have harry and Norman work together to help make up for Norman's mistake by having Harry become a hero too.
And maybe the Avengers would pitch in to help too? As for the really good lawyer you’re alluding to- his last name wouldn’t have been Murdock would it? (Who of course DID defend Peter in SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME).
Well, no problem for me becouse I hate the clone saga becouse I fell so sorry for the clone Gwen and Peter in this saga. I espacialy hated how the others are jurks to bouth Peter (well he was a jerk to but I can understan his reaction no body would can hold his own sanety when you're deat gril-frien sudenly cam of no where and alive) and clone Gwen becouse she was actually a victim too in this mayhem. And of all people I hated MJ and aunt May the most they bouth where the biggest jurks there espacialy MJ who never though how confused Peter is just now and don't know how to deal with this situation now and acted as a victim who is cheated by her boy-friend. 🙄
Since everyone knew his identity, Peter could go to Dr Strange and cast a spell so that everyone may forget he is Spider-Man. Problem solved, as long as Peter stays quiet this time unlike what happened in the movie

Imagine if this storyline continued as an elseworld type of story like Renew Your Vows, it would have been great. Imagine Peter on the run, avoiding the cops with a different spider suit, fighting foes to protect his loved one, then it ending with a battle where "Spider-Man" is going after J. Jonah Jameson with the real Peter Parker intervene and defeats the fake Spider-Man who turns out to be the Chameleon. Even after all JJJ has done to Peter, he still saved him. I wouldn't say it would change his mind about Peter, but he would just come out to the press that the source he's gotten from the Green Goblin to be false, and that Spider-Man is not a menace but someone trying to get by in life. The only thing I hate is that JJJ trusts the proof given by the Green Goblin, the person who has done more bad as both Norman and Goblin, the one who's goal is to become the crime boss of all of New York, the person who has attempted to kill people and Spider-Man saves them, the same Spider-Man who has been there to save people from the horrors of Green Goblin. JJJ trusts a murderous bastard's proof

That's sooo true tho. Like, my excitement for keeping up with comics has gone down ever since comics have been trying to bring real world problems into their stories, but you guys keep me hopeful about future stories and you also make it sound really interesting
Same, he’s friends with the Fantastic Four who are heroes whose identities are common knowledge and Robbie is on his side and can show that the Bugle’s claims of him being a menace are wrong. I like to think that Gwen might, in this what-if universe, would have allied with Professor X in human-mutant relations since the world knows that she, an ordinary human woman, married Peter who for all the public knows could have mutant genes. She was an aspiring biochemist. And even if not those possibilities he probably could disguise himself and he and Gwen could be together eventually.
What I think would be cool, is if Gwen's death happened when Peter gained the Black Suit. But it was the suit concealing that she had reservations, and was getting through to him about getting rid of the suit

It’s crazy how much Spider-Man’s life would have unraveled if Gwen had survived on that fateful night. It’s great that Peter and Gwen got married, but the exposure of his identity is unfortunate.
Crazy that I actually had this very issue as a kid (I'm a late 70s/early 80s baby lol). I think about all the Spidey comics I had back then that I wish I still had now and also wished I knew about taking care of my stuff as a kid. Oh well lol.
Apparently, in one universe, Gwen is met by Spider-Gwen, who warns her against doing what would lead to her capture by GG! It works, and some years down the line, THIS Gwen becomes a detective and the host of Carnage!🙂
Peter would’ve always ended up with MJ in canon because one of the main reasons why Gwen died is because Stan Lee and writers alike saw a sore in popularity for MJ’s character and her romance with Peter, thus making Gwen dispensable.
Also, Gwen seems like a naggy-bitch. If someone suggested to her that she take up martial arts for adapting to Spidey's lifestyle (so that she stays safe), she will refuse for fear turning ugly (MJ trained under multiple experts, including Captain America. And seriously, aren't police officers supposed to be training their kids to be able to defend themselves?!)!😐😠😡
I think they should have done something like this. Have Peter Parker save Gwen Stacy, but then she finds out that he's Spider-Man and then we see how their relationship changes. Don't have them get married right away. I think it would better than fridging her.

There's another What If Story, in which Spider-Man kept his six arms and was able to prevent the death of Gwen Stacy. (What If...? Vol.1 #42). He later becomes recognized as the world-spokesperson of the physically-challenged.
In Mexico, they ignored Gwen's death and began to make their own Spidey comics with her still alive and married to Peter. Also Peter has black hair for some reason.

The story writter to this what if story had back at this time a very strong agreemant about this story with marvel becouse marvel and the artist and writter have different ideas and thoughs about it and it came never to a real end becouse the artist and writter decided to leve bevoer it was finshed.
I feel like if this what if timeline got expanded upon it would have been a more adventurous route for Peter’s life to have the whole world know his identity and Robbie and Gwen aiding him. Maybe he’d fake an identity a la Ben Reilly. It would still be interesting. If only this a what if were continued upon. I always liked Gwen more than MJ for how she and Peter have a lot in common and natural chemistry where as his thing with MJ felt very much built off the foundation of tragic events and the two never had anything connecting them in terms of chemistry or compatibility before Gwen died. It’s why every adaptation has to change MJ to be an earthy girl next door rather than a flirty bad girl like she was pre-Gwen dying.

Gwen is better than MJ, it's always surprising how most of the MJ-FANS have forgoth that MJ was bevoer Gwen had died not this good person espacialy how she was to Harry when she was dating him. I feel like people forget that, yes, the 60s and 70s comics weren't as great at writing love interests as they tend to be now, Gwen did have a lot going on for her as a character and I liked that she loved Peter Parker first and foremost. She was a good friend and the relationship with her father gave her added depth (being raised by a New York police chief strengthened her understanding of justice and duty). Rather than the writer giving focus onto what was established about Gwen in the comics he killed her off and pretended it was cause she wasn't an interesting character, and I don't really think that was the best option; though in the long run... I do think her character's legacy is better than any Spider-Man character in the long run. She gets adapted well consistently outside the comics. Her brief appearance in the 90s cartoon was awesome (in an alternate dimension she was Iron Spider's wife and was kind of like the Pepper Potts to his Tony Stark and she helped the 90s cartoon Peter defeat Spider-Carnage), she was really lovable in TSSM. And fantastically portrayed by Emma Stone in the Amazing Spider-man movies. She even got to have an alternate universe version where she's Spider-Gwen/Spider-Woman/Ghost Spider. She gets to be a main character in the Spiderverse movies and is amazing. She's in more cartoons now too as a main focus character. She's basically the most popular female webslinger.
@@Nightman221k it's good to know that I'm not the only one who really read alle the chapter/issue where Gwen appeared in 60's/70's of TASM Comics and didn't over see the actuall real facts about Gwen and MJ characters, actions, backrounds and how theyer relationship with Peter was in that time. I'm also annoyed how many people espacialy the MJ-FANS sad Gwen was just boring and has no personality who "dosen't love Peter" and MJ was better from the start. If they had really read it thoroughly they wouldn't have forgotten MJ's previous selfish behavior and attitude twards the people and friends around her. But I most agree Aunt May was sometimes histerical but I can also understand why she was like that after Ben (her husband) died she only have Peter her nephew (who is more like a son to her) the only family who is left now and as a photgrapher for Spider-Man he is also always in constant danger. Nobody would there stay calm about something like this.
I'm gonna be honest, I really hate how some of these comics end. They just refuse to ever let Peter have his simple/happy ending. And I'm gonna have to disagree on your take that "which is exactly what you expect from a good Spiderman story", because I really don't think he has to even have a difficult ending for it to be good.
Gwen has powers of her own since before Peter was bitten in my fanfiction, and she learned very soon about his powers, so there is a great chance for her to live in my story.

When are you going to do history of Marvel's Sandman and Kurt Conners the Lizard since they made a live action comeback in Spider-Man No Way Home along with the Elementals who were mentioned in Spider-Man Far From Home?
What I would have changed for this story was Peter Parker to go to Doctor Strange and have him have all the people forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man.
If I was a writer for Marvel comics given free reign to do just ONE idea and given freedom to be as elaborate as I wanted to be … I’d do a timeline based off this What If story. Have it by my own little pocket universe where Gwen and Peter are allied with other heroes after his identity is exposed and strengthen his connections with the Fantastic Four and the X-men through it or maybe have them try to create new civilian identities to still have normal lives. IDK I find the premise so cool! Plus you have time established timeline to work with with things like Miles Warren/the Jackel having become obsessed with Gwen and having stolen her and Peter’s DNA you could get a better version of the Clone Saga or at least one where Warren is different since he’d be triggered out of jealousy for Peter and Gwen marrying rather than grieving his dead student. Or things like the Black suit saga and Venom but with a unique timeline where you can twist it like what if in this universe where Norman was alive during Peter’s split with the symbiote if the symbiote seeks out Norman since he ruined Peter’s life already.
What do you think is the best thing about this comic book event and who do you think is the best character? How do you think Spider-Man is going to get out of this situation so that he can be with his Aunt and the love of his life? The Sam Raimi films ruined the character of MJ for me, whether that was his choice or the studios I don't truly know, so I will always prefer worlds where Pete and Gwen stay together, or as another contender for best Spidey gf, Black Cat. Though as an ammendment, I will say I absolutely loved Renew Your Vows, and it gave me respect for the MJ character again. Though this new Spider-Man run is ruining it all over again.

I like 616 Gwen a lot too. She had potential that Gerry Conway didn’t try to make use of. Her family life is intriguing with her dad being a officer and not having a mom in the picture and her interest in becoming a scientific when, back then, women weren’t really common in that field of study. And her protectiveness of Peter and the way she saw his good nature WITHOUT knowing he was Spider-man showed that she really did recognize and love him for who he was as Peter. The man he was at his heart, not the costume or the powers.

Why is it that only Spider-Man characters can’t come back to life. We got Uncle Ben and Gwen Stacy.
The only characters in Pete’s life who return from the dead are his enemies. It’s so unfair.

It’s crazy how much Spider-Man’s life would have unraveled if Gwen had survived on that fateful night. It’s great that Peter and Gwen got married, but the exposure of his identity is unfortunate.
Crazy that I actually had this very issue as a kid (I'm a late 70s/early 80s baby lol). I think about all the Spidey comics I had back then that I wish I still had now and also wished I knew about taking care of my stuff as a kid. Oh well lol.

Peter would’ve always ended up with MJ in canon because one of the main reasons why Gwen died is because Stan Lee and writers alike saw a sore in popularity for MJ’s character and her romance with Peter, thus making Gwen dispensable.

The story writter to this what if story had back at this time a very strong agreemant about this story with marvel becouse marvel and the artist and writter have different ideas and thoughs about it and it came never to a real end becouse the artist and writter decided to leve bevoer it was finshed.
I feel like if this what if timeline got expanded upon it would have been a more adventurous route for Peter’s life to have the whole world know his identity and Robbie and Gwen aiding him. Maybe he’d fake an identity a la Ben Reilly. It would still be interesting. If only this a what if were continued upon. I always liked Gwen more than MJ for how she and Peter have a lot in common and natural chemistry where as his thing with MJ felt very much built off the foundation of tragic events and the two never had anything connecting them in terms of chemistry or compatibility before Gwen died. It’s why every adaptation has to change MJ to be an earthy girl next door rather than a flirty bad girl like she was pre-Gwen dying.

I feel like people forget that, yes, the 60s and 70s comics weren't as great at writing love interests as they tend to be now, Gwen did have a lot going on for her as a character and I liked that she loved Peter Parker first and foremost. She was a good friend and the relationship with her father gave her added depth (being raised by a New York police chief strengthened her understanding of justice and duty). Rather than the writer giving focus onto what was established about Gwen in the comics he killed her off and pretended it was cause she wasn't an interesting character, and I don't really think that was the best option; though in the long run... I do think her character's legacy is better than any Spider-Man character in the long run. She gets adapted well consistently outside the comics. Her brief appearance in the 90s cartoon was awesome (in an alternate dimension she was Iron Spider's wife and was kind of like the Pepper Potts to his Tony Stark and she helped the 90s cartoon Peter defeat Spider-Carnage), she was really lovable in TSSM. And fantastically portrayed by Emma Stone in the Amazing Spider-man movies. She even got to have an alternate universe version where she's Spider-Gwen/Spider-Woman/Ghost Spider. She gets to be a main character in the Spiderverse movies and is amazing. She's in more cartoons now too as a main focus character. She's basically the most popular female webslinger.
@@Nightman221k it's good to know that I'm not the only one who really read alle the chapter/issue where Gwen appeared in 60's/70's of TASM Comics and didn't over see the actuall real facts about Gwen and MJ characters, actions, backrounds and how theyer relationship with Peter was in that time. I'm also annoyed how many people espacialy the MJ-FANS sad Gwen was just boring and has no personality who "dosen't love Peter" and MJ was better from the start. If they had really read it thoroughly they wouldn't have forgotten MJ's previous selfish behavior and attitude twards the people and friends around her.
But I most agree Aunt May was sometimes histerical but I can also understand why she was like that after Ben (her husband) died she only have Peter her nephew (who is more like a son to her) the only family who is left now and as a photgrapher for Spider-Man he is also always in constant danger. Nobody would there stay calm about something like this.

I'm gonna be honest, I really hate how some of these comics end. They just refuse to ever let Peter have his simple/happy ending. And I'm gonna have to disagree on your take that "which is exactly what you expect from a good Spiderman story", because I really don't think he has to even have a difficult ending for it to be good.

If I was a writer for Marvel comics given free reign to do just ONE idea and given freedom to be as elaborate as I wanted to be … I’d do a timeline based off this What If story. Have it by my own little pocket universe where Gwen and Peter are allied with other heroes after his identity is exposed and strengthen his connections with the Fantastic Four and the X-men through it or maybe have them try to create new civilian identities to still have normal lives. IDK I find the premise so cool! Plus you have time established timeline to work with with things like Miles Warren/the Jackel having become obsessed with Gwen and having stolen her and Peter’s DNA you could get a better version of the Clone Saga or at least one where Warren is different since he’d be triggered out of jealousy for Peter and Gwen marrying rather than grieving his dead student. Or things like the Black suit saga and Venom but with a unique timeline where you can twist it like what if in this universe where Norman was alive during Peter’s split with the symbiote if the symbiote seeks out Norman since he ruined Peter’s life already.

I feel like he would spend an arc or two as a fugitive until something happens that will let him come back.
They answered this question in one panel of Twisted Toyfare Theater. In one word; Awsome!
The Sam Raimi films ruined the character of MJ for me, whether that was his choice or the studios I don't truly know, so I will always prefer worlds where Pete and Gwen stay together, or as another contender for best Spidey gf, Black Cat.
Though as an ammendment, I will say I absolutely loved Renew Your Vows, and it gave me respect for the MJ character again. Though this new Spider-Man run is ruining it all over again.

I like 616 Gwen a lot too. She had potential that Gerry Conway didn’t try to make use of. Her family life is intriguing with her dad being a officer and not having a mom in the picture and her interest in becoming a scientific when, back then, women weren’t really common in that field of study. And her protectiveness of Peter and the way she saw his good nature WITHOUT knowing he was Spider-man showed that she really did recognize and love him for who he was as Peter. The man he was at his heart, not the costume or the powers.
