A nacionalidade é só um papel, que tu até podes alterar se quiseres. A “etnia” é algo que não se muda, é a nossa herança e a nossa cultura.

    Funny enough, me and many other people in my area of Portugal, only exist today, because of this alliance. When Philippa of Lancaster came to marry with the portuguese king, she brought with her a knight that ended up marrying with a portuguese woman. I think you should have mentioned that at the start of WWII, Salazar and Churchill agreed that Portugal should remain neutral. By so doing, Germany had no reason to invade Madeira or the Azores, and thereby denying Germany access to a strategic base in the Atlantic. Portugal continued to trade with Germany so as not to provoke Germany. As you stated, Portugal's neutrality guaranteed Spain's neutrality. At the end of WWI, Churchill praised Portugal's role of neutrality declaring it a significant factor in the allies being able to win the war.

    A couple of points:
    During the Napoleonic Wars the British did have a major military base in Portugal, but it was used for more than defending Portugal. It was the base from which the Anglo-Portuguese Army pushed the French out of Spain (with Spanish help), and then invaded France over the Pyrenees.
    Although Portugal offered to enter WWII on the side of the British, it was London considered it more advantageous politically to have Portugal as a friendly neutral. However, the British decided to invoke the treaty in 1942 by requesting airbases on the Azores, which Portugal agreed to (Fascist Spain was no longer considered a threat). When Churchill announced this in Parliament and the treaty under which the request was made, there were gasps in the House.
    In a dangerous world, it is good to know who your friends really are.

    • @Gloriaimperial1
      @Gloriaimperial1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the war against Napoleon on the peninsula, most of the British victories were in Portugal. It is amazing how Britain sent such a small army (35,000-70000 soldiers, half Portuguese). Spain had 400,000 soldiers in arms. Of course the British army was useful there. But at the end of the war the British had had 35,000 dead. Spain half a million dead. (more than all the British killed in WWII). If we look at the fact that Napoleon's army (the best in Europe) had 300,000 soldiers there, it is easy to understand that most of the fighting was between those who had the most deaths: Spain (500000) and France (300000)
      Britain was not invaded because it was an island. Hitler's army, which reached Russia, would have taken a week to conquer England. The Normandy landing was made because the Russians had 27 million dead on the eastern front, and because the Spanish spy Joan Pujol deceived Hitler about the landing site. Although the allies had great courage in the final victory.
      The so-called fascist Spain, existed, to stop a Soviet Spain. Franco had accepted the Spanish republic, and loyal. But before the war, thousands of priests, nuns, and peaceful people were murdered, because the Spanish socialists and communists wanted to make a Russian revolution in Western Europe. As is logical Franco did not leave power, because he knew that this would bring another civil war

    That alliance made the Portuguese King John VI move to Rio (because of Napoleon) in 1808. Rio became the capital of the United Kingdom of Brazil, Portugal and Algarves, and that's when Brazilians started to see their land as a country. Interesting how an alliance made so long ago and so far from here shaped my national identity.

    • @MaSsiVeGaming1
      @MaSsiVeGaming1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was no such thing as the "United Kingdom of Brazil, Portugal and Algarves". It was the "United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves". And it only lasted 10 years. King John VI was a coward and traitor to Portugal, just like his successor.

    Nice video! However, there's one thing about the 1386 treaty of Windsor that not a lot of people know about. The military alliance actually went both ways. England sent a contingent of longbowmen to help fight the Spanish at the battle of Aljubarrota, and the Portuguese sent warships to the English which they used to fight the French, since at the time the English did not yet have a proper navy.
