Usually that kind of machine is loaded with candy..and if you land on the red then the sides will align out so nothing falls off the edge.

Oh I've actually seen a push game with such wings before, kinda.
There's an Australian couple whose videos I used to watch. Their arcade had a candy push game which held chocolate bars and candy instead of gems and keychains. The lower platform had flaps that would go up once you hit a certain target, kinda like the wings on this one, just attached to the platform instead. But then there was also an ever higher bonus level when not only the flaps would go up, but the higher platform would push out a lot, sweeping a whole bunch of candy into the chute. Sure, afterwards you'd need to pick up a lot to have stuff on the platform again, but if your platform had been really full and you stopped afterwards that would have made for quite the win.
I don't remember which target had it, I think both of these were the flaps went up, but there were tubes of candy at the sides of the machine (instead of a dome it was a box type of arcade game) and unless it was stuck it would send candy from those tubes flying onto the platforms.
The jackpot was a compartment at the top of the machine filled with two regular bags of candy and some additional loose chocolate bars and candies and when you hit it it'd fall right into the price shoot.
