  • We took a Fall drive into the beautiful Cataloochee Valley.
Cataloochee is located in a very remote section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, on the NC side of the Park. It features many historic structures, a peaceful river, elk sightings, and also a small 27 site campground.
It is one of the most beautiful places to see Fall color.

We were just there October 20th. It's an absolutely must see in one's lifetime. A bull elk walked within 20ft of us and bugled. Also saw a calf nursing.

I have not been here in a few years. You sure chose a beautiful time to go!
The words in the cemetery that y’all spoke were true and it’s so nice to take that opportunity to say them. I see many many cemeteries on hills here. I always assumed they put them there because it’s such a beautiful final resting spot for their loved ones. 🎶”Go rest high on that mountain…”🎶
I always get very contemplative in old cemeteries and old homesites. I always wonder about the people and realize they were once young and had a life… I think we all have a purpose , no matter how large or small, and it’s interesting how God uses us. Yall are doing good work in sharing your videos.

I see the sign about moving the rocks-
Ive wondered about allll these painted rocks etc on Etsy and all the rocks in landscaping etc and have actually wondered about the effects of people taking rocks home. Lol I mean, I’ve done my share of it coming up here- not so much from a river- but still. It was just the first sign I’ve seen addressing the rocks and I think it was for the salamanders, but anyway, funny thought I’ve had.
Ive wondered about that house color also. Im assuming the park found paint chips and matched it. Many colors fade and oxidize over time and I wonder if that color was originally a darker color. Or even a green. Would have most likely been a dark green. I know in the fabric dyeing and using natural pigments, as the age, they can change to almost an entirely different color spectrum. Just food for thought that I had. Im sure the park looked at paint chips, but I wonder how far they took the research from there.

I don’t have an arch yet either! Have y’all built one yet?!?! Lol
Shoot… my house is probably the size of half the upstairs lol
Yes all that milled lumber and all that was a nice house back then. I’ll have to look that place up one day. I need to ride over there. Seems like there was a spring house next to that house but I could be confusing it with another Place.
Ive often wondered about taking the road from Cosby. I saw it on the map and assumed it was a dirt road. I wondered if it was open and possible to go that way. I also wondered if it would be worth it, if there’s anything to see on it along the way.
      This was a great video

    • @NCMemoryMakers

Yes, the Fall is probably the most beautiful time to go there. We decided we wanted to make a Fall video there, months ago. We had gone once before, 2 years back, and loved it.
And yes, we want to also use our channel to glorify God and give the Gospel, and standing in a cemetery is a great time to do that. I did a Gospel presentation back in December, when we were in Los Angeles, standing at the grave of Don Knotts. We had visited Westwood Village Cemetery there in LA, and saw the graves of many famous celebrities. I told Shawnasi there was no way I was going to pass up that opportunity to talk about life, death, and eternity.
Not sure if you had subscribed then, but it was back in December.

@@cumberlandquiltchic1 I think you are correct, because there was a white building that we could see over in the woods next to the house, and I do think there was a spring there.
We took the road from Cosby once. I'm glad to say we did it, but it was very long, and I think we'll just come in from Maggie Valley from now on.

Cemeteries back then were put on sides of mountains or hills where they could keep watch over the vallies.

    • @NCMemoryMakers

      @@pamcamp1396 That is true.
If the color in Cataloochee is not what you are hoping for, I would suggest riding through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Highway 441. You have a wide range of elevation there, and you are bound to see peak colors somewhere.
Once you get up high, the colors will be past peak, of course. But you should go through some very colorful areas on the way up. And maybe even consider Cades Cove, as it's lower elevation than Cataloochee.
Hope Cataloochee still has some great color, though.

Cemetery is on the top of the mountain for a reason. Flat surface that won't flood. Valleys can become flooded and also reason no homes are built there.

    • @NCMemoryMakers
      @NCMemoryMakers  ปีที่แล้ว

They're actually are home places in the valley, though. They are not necessarily in the lowest areas, but they are not up on hills, either. I'm not saying they shouldn't elevate the cemeteries a little bit. But I don't know why it was up such a steep incline. This one was incredibly steep, and I would imagine it took some doing to get the bodies and the headstones up there.

@@NCMemoryMakers I grew up in the mountains of East KY. People there don't consider the climb to be a problem. They love the view and think it's a beautiful place for the cemetery. Sure, there are homes in bottom areas, but people know what floods and won't build there.
