I found at an abandoned house in my brothers neighborhood ( we know the guy) some black plastic pots left on the side deck next to a giant juniper tree ( or cedar) and seeds dropped in the pots over the years and had trees growing in them ( about 4 feet tall) I’ve had them in my backyard growing :) Score!

I just rescued 2 for Lowe's for $2 each. Fingers crossed they don't die, if they do, at least they had a better chance here than in the Lowe's clearance rack that doesn't get watered. Ever If they do make it I think we will just end up planting them in the yard & just let them take a few years to destress. I myself have C-PTSD, if anyone knows how long destressing from the damage people can cause I sure do.
Hey Jason, I'm new to bonsai and I am working on a Juniper...I have had it about 2 years and I repotted it about six months ago. Being in Arizona and living in an apartment, I've decided to use indoor UV lighting. I usually run both blue and red lighting for about 6 hours a day. I've been having some difficulties, though...there are a few brown leaves scattered throughout. I've tried pruning brown leaves a few times in the past but I'm always worried those spots won't grow back. I usually water it every night. I'm just not sure if I'm watering it wrong or if I'm lighting it too much...Google is not much help. Every time I try to research bonsai maintenance, I get contradicting information.

Hello Jason, thank you for sharing this really helpful video. When repotting a Juniper from a garden centre pot, can I ask if it is safe to remove all the old soil or do I need to leave most of the root ball intact please? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

My bonsai has some parts turning hard and they fall off, I’ve just noticed its also getting yellow. I water it on a regular basis and make sure it gets enough water. Im not sure what to do since it’s my first Bonsai..

I have owned my juniper (procumbens nana, I believe) for just over half a year. It’s a small, young thing. I will admit that I bought it without reading up on bonsai care and at first did not water it as often as it needed to be, and didn’t realize that it needed constant humidity. As a result, most of the plant has taken on a dull, lime-green hue with some yellowed, light-brown tips. It doesn’t seemed sprouted anything new in a while, but it is indoors and it is the middle of winter. I’ve taken it out of direct sunlight and moved it to further back away from the window to give it some reprieve and my humidity kit is on its way, but I was wondering if I should move the juniper to full shade. Or is my bonsai too far gone, and I should learn my lesson and try over? Please let me know! I’m desperate to save this little guy, and I’m kicking myself for not realizing all of these things sooner!
Where do you live? First and foremost, It should be grown outdoors. Even up north. How often are you watering? It should also have sun light above 40f. Below 40 junipers go into a dormancy period and below 32f thry can be kept in a cold frame, but need to be checked on from time to time. I have bonsai family in Michigan that keep them in garages, but those are dormant until may. Down in Florida, thry should be kept outdoors. Always . No exceptions. Except for short term viewing. ( 2 to 3 days max)
@@SchleysBonsai I live in Iowa, so it's in the low 30's right now, often gets below that. So I have it in the house right now, and the thermostat is set at 73. I water it about every three-four days.
@@jessicaalbright5535 it may be hard to keep it happy right now. Normally the trees are kept outside and just protected from the worst of the winter by putting them in a cold frame or in a winter shelter. Keeping it indoors may be difficult, even temporarily. Since it hasn't had time to adjust to cooler temps, do you have a cooler area that you can transition it to? You'll need a 3 week transition temp of say 50f before you can bring it into dormancy outdoors. If you try to keep indoors till spring, it's going to be an uphill battle. Many mist the juniper foliage 3 times a week, and water weekly, but again, I don't suggest you grow junipers indoors. It just never seems to work out and the owner is disheartened so much they get out of the hobby. That doesn't help an already tiny community in the US for sure. Frankly it's the reason we are doing juniper videos as thry are a misunderstood species for bonsai to most beginners. Good luck!
@@jessicaalbright5535 I don't know if you're in any way near the problem anymore, but J think the underlying idea is that junipers expect to be outside in the winter, as they need quite a lot of light. Your windowsill would help with light, but not so much with reaching dormancy. If you crack your window in the winter... at least turn off your hear first, eh?
What is the best type of plant pot to develop a 1-2 year old Juniper? I have a Juniper Kit coming from a nursery-it has a bonsai pot, but, I am not sure about the pot for it. And what would be the best soil? -for development.
@@carolficorilli9768 I wouldn't rush getting it into a finished pot for a few years. And bonsai soil is always the best long term growing medium, but don't over pot too big, or too small. A one to 2 year old juniper probably should start on a 6"- 8" grow pot for the first year
i just got one from a nursery and it has browning in between its little branches and the foliage rather than from its leaves inward if that makes sense. what could this indicate and what should i do? thank you in advance!

Just like a comment I just read from 5 months ago my grandparents bought me a bonsai for my birthday last year in June off amazon, my juniper has brown yellowing foliage. I don’t know how to care for it I just water it as much as the paper says. Can you please give me suggestions on products to care for it? It’s also showing roots above the soil. I am brand new to bonsai and am thinking maybe a juniper wasn’t the best choice. I did notice that there are a couple of spots on my new juniper that is brown/yellow at the beginning of the branch, should these be trimmed off so the tree doesn’t put energy towards healing it or should I leave them?
How is your care? How long have you owned it? Where is it growing? Full sun? Shade? How often are you watering? These are all questions I'll have to know before I answer you.
Ive seen a few people put ficus in enclosed terrariums that gave a bonsai look. The issue is, if it's an enclosed environment with a lot of humidity, there is no air flow, so fungus tends to kill off everything. Ive Seen some terrariums last decades, but not with trees in them, and not when you're going back into them repeatedly. That can introduce new fungal spores.

Where do you live? You can collect the live ones. Leave foliage on them, and try to get as much of the root ball as you can. If you cut all green off, thry will die 100%
What fungi and pesticide do you recommend? When i bought the house, there is a Blue tip juniper (spiral) in my yard outside. Its been 2 years and great. this year the leaves turned brown and look like they have black spots on the tip. Also there was 2 dwarf plants next to it ( about 3 feet apart) that died as well. do you think something is wrong with the soil, as in fungi? Do you think I can save the Juniper and dwarfs? When we moved in, we laid weed control tarp and rubber type mulch to control weed growth in that area. We live in South Texas. The bottom of the tree is still green with a little browning inside but all the top half is brown and has me concerned. I have seen so many videos, spider mites, blight, worm bags, etc. I want to save the tree if possible.
Hi. I have a juniper procumbens nana aged 3 years. I have noticed it has been 4/5 months the new growth of the juniper is turning pale green. Recently it is white ish pale green on outside buds but inside it's green. There are lots of dead needles inside. It hasn't been repotted for 2 years. it still has lots of foliage but bit less compare to last year. What should I do? When is the best time to repot.
@@SchleysBonsai I normally water once in evening. And sometimes in morning during hot days. I use organic fertilizer vermicompost bonemeal, once a month. Soil is nursey soil. I haven't changed the soil for a year.

I’ve tried watering less but the tree has continued to yellow. Given the time of year I do not want to repot as the tree is weak but I don’t know what to do to fix this issue. Please help🙏🏻
I certainly hope your Bonsai is still alive. Watering should be done when the soil look slightly dry or fully dry. There's no set schedule. In most cases though depending on where you live and type of temps etc. If it's a drier climate and higher temps you'll have to keep in mind to water it possibly daily. I own two Juniper Bonsai. One was gifted to me it's 3 years old the other I found some stock and made a Juniper Bonsai out of it myself that ones 33 years old. I have 6 other trees of different species potted in potting soil that I'm currently letting mature properly before turning them into full Bonsai. If you have any other questions I'll be glad to help.
Do you have any advice for removing branches without leaving a scar? I’m not planning on pruning any branches anytime soon but I’d like to know how to do it correctly before I need to.
My juniper's trunk has white mold on the trunk, and the foliage is not as bright green as it used to. The foliage it's starting to turn yellow/brownish from the bottom. I got it almost a month ago, I water it 3 days a week and since I got it I've fertilized it twice. I'm not sure of what's wrong with it or what to do.

Hi there, I’ve had a juniper bonsai for about 4 months already and I had gone on a trip for a week about 2 weeks ago. When I had come back, I realized I had left my bonsai at my window sill (it’s currently winter where I am and my room gets pretty cold) and my bonsai seemed dried out. The top of the tree is yellow-ish green and the rest are a lighter green but the light green parts fall off whenever something touches it even the lightest amount of force. Do I still have a chance of recovery? If so any tips? What should I do?

@@SchleysBonsai It's outside on a metal shelf. It receives about 6 hours of direct sun but it's on the Texas heat all day long (90-110'F). I'm watering every night, once a day and misting the branches too.
Hey idk if you can help me but I messed up pruning last year and cut off a bunch of the growing tips, now a year later everywhere I pruned has dieback and is a pale and brittle green, there's some soft and healthy tips left but the tree is really struggling, what should I do?
Leave it be. Allow it to recover itself. All you can do is fertilize it and water it and giving it proper sunlight. Like he said if it's struggling you just need to be patient. No wiring it or cutting it or anything. Just the essentials of water and feed aka fertilize.
Yes. Outdoors all the time. In the rainy season they love it. If The bonsai soil is correct and has perfect drainage, the tree just grows faster. If it rains nonstop for more than 3 days you'll want to put it under an eve to let it dry out for a day or two, but then back out in full sun after. In the summer I water most junipers daily
Jason Schley I have this juniper that’s looking very dry. Someone gave it to me after being inside for over a year since they bought it. Never been repotted. I watched you videos yesterday till 2 AM trying to figure out what to do but I don’t know if it’s still alive. I repotted yesterday and put some egg shells and coffee grounds because someone told me it’s like a fertilizer. I would love to get your opinion with some fotos of the tree because I’m so worried it’s dead or dying fast. Do you think it’s correct to use that fertilizer? I don’t have access to much because of the situation with coronavirus everything is closed. Thank you for the reply
Sometimes it takes a few weeks for a juniper that is dead to actually brown out. If foliage is crunchy and falls off to the touch it's probably already dead, at least in that area of the tree

Yeah, you're right. That's what the owner paid for it before it was even put in thr proper mix 2 years ago and put in a trainer to establish vigor. He got it from a hobbyist who was proud of their trees apparently. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching

That's not necessarily root rot . What soil is it in? where are you keeping it? where do you live? How often are you watering?
Would it be possible to have mine indoors with a grow light on a timer? And me obviously watering it..
Most Bonsai need to be outside. They rarely survive inside if ever. Tropical bonsai are ok inside but all the others only survive outside.

One was gifted to me it's 3 years old the other I found some stock and made a Juniper Bonsai out of it myself that ones 33 years old. I have 6 other trees of different species potted in potting soil that I'm currently letting mature properly before turning them into full Bonsai. If you have any other questions I'll be glad to help.
Do you have any advice for removing branches without leaving a scar? I’m not planning on pruning any branches anytime soon but I’d like to know how to do it correctly before I need to.
Typically, with a juniper you'd create a jin, not a flat or concave cut for it to roll over like with a deciduous tree
My juniper's trunk has white mold on the trunk, and the foliage is not as bright green as it used to. The foliage it's starting to turn yellow/brownish from the bottom. I got it almost a month ago, I water it 3 days a week and since I got it I've fertilized it twice. I'm not sure of what's wrong with it or what to do.
Where are you growing it? Where do you live? What kind of soil is it in?
@@SchleysBonsai I'm growing it outside, it gets a good amount of sun and in the afternoon shade. I live in New York(long insland) it's been very hot and sunny lately. About the soil, I'm not sure. It was a gift and they got it from a flower website. They told me I should use a fungicide, is this okay?
@@dianasandoval9165 you should be watering daily in bonsai soil as every few days in hot days isn't quite enough.

@@dianasandoval9165 once it stabilizes, trim off dead foliage and brush the trunk with a toothbrush and vinegar. Or a brass brush if it's deadwood
Hi there, I’ve had a juniper bonsai for about 4 months already and I had gone on a trip for a week about 2 weeks ago. When I had come back, I realized I had left my bonsai at my window sill (it’s currently winter where I am and my room gets pretty cold) and my bonsai seemed dried out. The top of the tree is yellow-ish green and the rest are a lighter green but the light green parts fall off whenever something touches it even the lightest amount of force. Do I still have a chance of recovery? If so any tips? What should I do?

How often are you watering and where did you put it?
@@SchleysBonsai It's outside on a metal shelf. It receives about 6 hours of direct sun but it's on the Texas heat all day long (90-110'F). I'm watering every night, once a day and misting the branches too.
Hey idk if you can help me but I messed up pruning last year and cut off a bunch of the growing tips, now a year later everywhere I pruned has dieback and is a pale and brittle green, there's some soft and healthy tips left but the tree is really struggling, what should I do?
Leave it be. Allow it to recover itself. All you can do is fertilize it and water it and giving it proper sunlight. Like he said if it's struggling you just need to be patient. No wiring it or cutting it or anything. Just the essentials of water and feed aka fertilize.
I have a question. I have a procumbens nana and its leaves are a grayish or brownish green is that normal and if not how could I fix that

Yes. Outdoors all the time. In the rainy season they love it. If The bonsai soil is correct and has perfect drainage, the tree just grows faster.
If it rains nonstop for more than 3 days you'll want to put it under an eve to let it dry out for a day or two, but then back out in full sun after. In the summer I water most junipers daily
Jason Schley I have this juniper that’s looking very dry. Someone gave it to me after being inside for over a year since they bought it. Never been repotted. I watched you videos yesterday till 2 AM trying to figure out what to do but I don’t know if it’s still alive. I repotted yesterday and put some egg shells and coffee grounds because someone told me it’s like a fertilizer. I would love to get your opinion with some fotos of the tree because I’m so worried it’s dead or dying fast. Do you think it’s correct to use that fertilizer? I don’t have access to much because of the situation with coronavirus everything is closed. Thank you for the reply
By the way I live in Ecuador and we get Teo seasons. Summer and rainy seasons. The temperatures never go to extremes like winter or summer in the USA
The Foliage on my juniper bonsai got hard and crusty and it falls off easy. What could be wrong with it ?
Those sections where it's crunchy are dead. It may still be green because it takes a while for the green to turn brown

Why is my bonsai brittle but not brown
Sometimes it takes a few weeks for a juniper that is dead to actually brown out. If foliage is crunchy and falls off to the touch it's probably already dead, at least in that area of the tree

200$ for that tree? Even it was healthy that’s way too much. I find trees older than that with great movement at nurseries for 125$.
Yeah, you're right. That's what the owner paid for it before it was even put in thr proper mix 2 years ago and put in a trainer to establish vigor. He got it from a hobbyist who was proud of their trees apparently.
