Thanks GTN...after 3 months of training, completed my first Tri today...an Olympic distance (Columbus, OH...USA). Turning 50 tomorrow. Thanks for helping me achieve my goal!!
I would say rather than tri-suit for initial triathlon/s is to use Triathlon shorts and cycling jersey. You'll get more use out of the cycling Jersey in day-to-day use and it has zip in front to allow cooling when on the run!

Yikes! I've been bitten. I've never done a tri, but I've decided to do it. I learned to swim when I was 5-years-old. Last year, at the age of 62, I rode my bike 17,778 kilometers. This year, I'm on-pace to exceed 20,000 kilometers of cycling. I need to run comfortably. My resting heart rate is 46-49bpm, and it's normally 115-120bpm for zone 2. I'm pretty competitive, but it's okay as long as I finish. I've done a half-marathon in the past, so with some training, I'm sure I can do it. Can I get some encouragement?

Any videos or suggestions on bigger or overweight people trying to lean down and build up for a triathlon. Btw, I absolutely love your videos. Very informative and funny at times. Keep up the good work.
What about post race training? I just did my first tri last weekend and I wasn’t sure if I should take a few days off, one day, no days? And should we resume the heavier schedule right away or ease back into it?
You should listen to your body. If you feel sore, take a rest. You could also experience Dom's, especially if you are not used to doing the distances on a regularly basis, your legs will feel pretty beat up and the lower portion of your back. I would recommend a rest week where you still regularly exercise, but at a lower intensity and with more of an emphasis on recovery activities. Yoga, stretching, light cardio. The foam roller is your best friend and will help to get more blood flow into your muscles. I hope this helps, awesome work on completing your first one 😀
hey i need help i have an upcoming triathlon this nov10 and its currently oct2 and I haven’t started to train cycling, running and swimming, what do i do?
Hi - great videos! Only coming across these now as have recently signed up for 2 x Sprint events next year. Is there a link to the training plan discussed in this series of videos please?
10 to 12 weeks, that's pretty dangerous guys. With that period of training I would recommend a 1/4 triathlon as a beginner. Preventing injuries will be a lot more important!
Any advice for those newbies who have work/life schedules constantly changing? I have a young family and run a business. It’s tough trying to stay consistent at times with training.
I have this issue. My answer is to get up before everyone and get it in early. I find I am more motivated in the morning and staying up watching TV is a big time sink I can live without.
Awesome Video! Gave me a boost and confident to go for it! Been running for almost a year and started swimming for a couple of months. Will slowly build a bike. I am aiming to start triathlon, Ironman included, next year. Glad to have found your channel which will be my bible for this journey. :)
Could you also do a video/series on how to run? I just did my first two runs (3k and 5k) and I feel more broken than any endurance mtb race has ever exhausted me...
It is usually Swimming first, then biking and finally running! We are training for an iron man 70.3 this year and are documenting our journey, along with sharing some studies and research on training along the way! Let us know if you like our content! :)
I have been a swimmer all my life and a cross country runner throughout middle school and some of highschool, I hope to do my first triathlon next summer. Hope there isnt an age requirement lol I will only be 15 when I do it. Really though, 6 miles really isnt that long seeing as how a long run for me is 8 miles but idk how hard it will be after swimming and biking
@@hanibaladaptiveboxing4204 wow forgot about this. I'm pretty sure there was an age requirement and I ended up not doing it because the equipment, especially for the biking portion, was pricey. Don't worry though there is good news. I completed my first marathon in may and it took a lot of work. I finally achieved my goal of doing one of those "big races" haha.
I'm preparing for two distances: 70.3 and ironMan. For half ironMan I assumed one year of preparation is ok, and another year for full ironMan. I have a swimming background, but I really struggle with running. So most of my training are easy runs. Like, 5 days to run, 2 days to swim and 2 days to cycle. Often combine swim and cycling in one day.
Glad that you enjoy triathlon training too! We are also training for an iron man 70.3 this year and are documenting our journey, along with sharing some studies and research on training along the way! Let us know if you like our content! :)
Same, i looked at the 13 year old distance recommended and i tried today and got the 6 mile bike and one mile run just fine but i didn't add the swimming
For my first Tri I even rented the wet suit and the bike (I did train on a bike I borrowed from a friend), so investment can be even less... This is for your second event that you start piling gears up :-D
I can recommend not having an expensive bike when you do your first triathlon. It's been 20 years since I gave up triathlon and there is one race that stick in my mind. Before this race I had a crash on my race bike and so I raced on my training bike with mud guards and a pannier rack. I was over taking people who were on full carbon fiber low profile time trial bikes that cost many thousands of pounds, and I was just going faster without even any tri bars just standard drops on my training bike. It was so funny I still laugh about it today. This was 20 years ago so a full carbon fiber bike would be several thousand pounds, don't spend that sort of money if you are slow. Being slow is perfectly reasonable everyone has to start somewhere, just make sure your bike matches your ability. Some people were racing on mountain bikes, they were slow and I have respect for them for giving it a go and racing. But come on if you spend more money on your bike than some people spend on a car then just do some more training so that you don't get overtaken by someone on a winter training bike with mud guards and a pannier rack.
Hey, Just had few questions about it. I don't know how to swim but i have done marathons. How many years would it take someone like me to prepare for a triathlon? considering if i spend this year learning to swim. A little advice from you would keep me motivated. This was a great video, so simple and so informative. Thanks in advance.
depends on what length you want to start with, a full triatlon isn't something you can get done in a few months if you have learn to swim before training the swimming part. You might want to start with a sprint or a 1/4 triatlon after you have gotten your swimming skills up to basic standards. I know from when I was young it was 1 or 2 years once a week I think to learn how to swim, so to be able to swim will go faster for an adult who is fit enough. Depending on how fast you can learn it it shouldn't take more than about 10 sessions, maybe even faster, after that you can train to swim well and longer. I would say if you are decently fit, 1/4 triatlon should be no problem to finish. Pacing is everything as you will know from marathons.
Thank you so much... this definitely calmed my nerves. I think i will get my basics right with swimming and may be next year start with 1/4 triathlon. Again thanks a lot for such a practical and positive reply. Cheers.
tnks! your videos are helping me a lot, with all the tips, even though there's no way to really train in one week, at least I have good pointers not to die!
