    Just this last St. Patrick's day outside of Philadelphia (Delco... we have a Saturday night live episode dedicated to us....lol). We marched in a local Irish-American parade run by a local heritage organization that my family has been part of for a long time. Afterwards we had a party in a VFW and I herd an Irish-American and an Irishman preform this song. The man explained the story just as you did and the crowd was silent. It was a wonderful song, performance, and a wonderful day.
    Also, thank you for defending Irish-Americans. Its tough hearing "You are not Irish because you herd of a story of a great grand...."
    There are still Irish and Italian-American communities wrapped around ever east coast city to Chicago. We are not constantly throwing our heritage in peoples faces or using it to be ignorant to others, though there are plenty that do outside these areas. There are great communities of people of Irish decent over here that have influences everything from town names to whole sections of cities.
    I am a 30 year old male from Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania in Delaware County (Delco) and I am 85% Irish.
    My family came here during the famine... The DNA persists and we live in a melting pot so a lot of American state identity differently than others.
    We are not all 14% screaming that we are Irish. Though there are plenty that do.
    We don't state we are Irish in the sense of being an Irish-national
    You understand this and you help teach folks.
    You are awesome lol
    I am getting married next year and I get to finally see the hills of Ireland. That will be pretty nice haha
    ALSO! If you don't know of the Molly Maguires of Schuylkill County, PA. Check em out! Sean Connery plays in the movie about them.

    A few days ago I learned about a person being very sick who used to be very important to me. She and her sister would sing this song so beautifully. So when I heard about the one sister being sick I remembered the song and started playing it myself. I did a lot of research and must have listened to the song about 100 times by now but only with your explanation of the story I finally understand the background of the line "I had to leave my own sick bed...". Thanks for that! What I still don't quite understand is the line with "his blood upon the rose". I am hoping to get behind that at some point :)

      This is a reference to the poem I See His Blood Upon The Rose written by Joseph Mary Plunkett himself. The poem is about the importance and intensity of his religious beliefs. He saw God everywhere:
      I see his blood upon the rose
      And in the stars the glory of his eyes,
      His body gleams amid eternal snows,
      His tears fall from the skies.

    Hello Davey. I just dropped by chance on this one tonight. Like the written word I've sent ye, I can do the same with with songs and tunes. They would be all CDs, but might have to be cleaned up with the "toothpaste" method . But I think there may be a bit of rare stuff among them.
    "Grace" just being one you will find among them. Give me some little time to forward forward to you.
    Warmest regards, Mel

    How about covering the song"A Rebel Heart"?

  • @niallmac44
    @niallmac44 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is the first time that I have seen anyone (other than me) bring out the MacDonagh - Gifford connection. No someone needs to give Nellie Gifford (there were six sisters) her due. She was aide de camp to Constance Markievicz during the Rising. She was also the "nurse" who smuggled Jim Larkin into The Imperial Hotel to address the crowd during the 1913 Lockout. There are a couple of books about the sisters but I would recommend Rebel Sisters by Marita McKenna Conlon. I am not exactly disinterested. I am the grandson of Thomas and Muriel MacDonagh and so grandnephew to the Gifford sisters. I am also grandnephew to the six Gifford brothers (pity the poor mother) but they all stayed loyal to the crown and are pretty much forgotten.

    • @Imyourhuckleberry01
      @Imyourhuckleberry01 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes people do tend to forget or dont know that Grace lost 2 men in her life over that 24 hrs on 3 and 4 May. They also forget to mention that Muriel MacDonagh died just some 14 months after the Rising in a swimming incident at Skerries whilst out swimming with one of James Connolly's daughters. Sadly at the time I believe Donagh MacDonagh was in hospital when Muriel died, leaving the children Donagh and Barbara MacDonagh as orphans. Such as sad history but one that should be told.

    • @niallmac44
      @niallmac44 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Imyourhuckleberry01 Yes, my Dad was in the hospital with TB at the time of his mother's drowning. He remembered being help up to a window so he could see the funeral procession. He was told what a glorious thing the funeral was with 4,000 volunteers in the procession. He was just four at the time and did not really understand what the funeral was.

    • @Imyourhuckleberry01
      @Imyourhuckleberry01 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@niallmac44 Yes, thank you. I assume then Nuala is your mother rather than her sister Maura Smyth who Donagh married after Maura's tragic death in 1939? I am English by the way so please excuse me if I have this wrong, but Muriel's story is something I have always been interested in. I believe there is also a specific ring involved in the story which was buried with Muriel.
