Nightwish Army + Epica Legion have been summoned. Symphonic Metal bands I can immediately think of (and often tour together) include Nightwish, Epica, Kamelot, Xandria, Within Temptation, Leaves' Eyes...you have a massive world to explore.
    Personal top 5 suggestions:
    1. It's going to be said, but just more Nightwish (live). Personal favs being Romanticide, 7 Days to the Wolves, I Want My Tears Back (Wacken 2013), Yours Is An Empty Hope (Floor growls!), and Ever Dream.
    2. Liar Liar by Kamelot
    3. Consign to Oblivion - Epica (much more metal)
    4. The Day That The World Breaks Down - Ayreon (features MANY symphonic and power metal artists in one song)
    5. And We Run - Within Temptation, feat. Xzibit (symphonic metal/rap mix!)

To expand on what others have said, Floor and Simone know each other well. They are friends in real life and Floor was Simone's vocal coach. In addition to that, the man who shouted "Floor Jansen" with a growly voice at the end is Epica's co-founder Mark Jansen (no family relation with Floor). He was with After Forever with Floor before leaving due to creative differences and forming his own band, Epica, with his girlfriend at the time - Simone. They have named Nightwish as a major inspiration for them - long before Floor was in it.
Simone and Mark are no longer a couple but they work together very well still. Simone is married to a member of another Symphonic metal band - Kamelot. Kamelot toured with Nightwish during their 2012 Imaginaerum US tour. During this tour, Nightwish's lead vocalist at the time, Anette Olzon, fell ill and the two female vocalists in Kamelot covered for her during one show. Anette publicly criticized the band for replacing her during that show instead of cancelling it. This was the last straw that led to Anette's firing from Nightwish and Floor joining them. We know the rest ;)
One of the two Kamelot vocalists that covered for Anette then is Elize Ryd. Elize was considered by Nightwish in 2005-2006 after they fired Tarja, but they thought she was too young and went for Anette instead. Elize then formed her own band, Amaranthe. Unrelated to this, in Anette's first album with Nightwish, they released a song titled "Amaranth".
Are your heads spinning yet? XD

Had a book in the late '80's that had a "genealogical family tree" of bands. These various North Sea / Baltic nation symphonic metal bands would fit right in perfectly.
Wish I could remember the name of that book. Was fascinating how most of the major bands are interconnected.

Aw, was so pleased with how excited you guys were on this one. You're right, these bands are popular just not in the US.
Epica doesn't usually play with an orchestra but this was a special show. I believe Simone, Epica's singer, was pregnant at this time if I remember correctly. I think she wrote the lyrics for this song as well - I admire that she writes a lot of the lyrics, they are quite good!

  • @BrindleChase
    @BrindleChase 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

Love the reaction. Epica doesn't normally tour with the orchestra, like Nightwish. But this was a special 10th anniversary performance for Epica in the Netherlands, their home country. Floor is also Dutch and good friends with Epica. She used to be in a band called After Forever with Epica's guitarist Mark Jansen. No relation to Floor. Usually the orchestra and choir is taped for the studio versions and played as a backing track, and through digital samples by the keyboardist. Anyway, Sancta Terra is Latin for Holy Land.

Dimmu Borgir - The Mourning Palace - is another by a great band that often has a full orchestra on stage with choir. I am also saddened that a lot of Americans are oblivious to this music. There is much depth added to the music with an orchestra and choir on stage. Brilliant reaction. It was obvious immediately that this music moved the both of you to another level of listening. 🙃Peace

One of the things that impressed me about the infamous live "Ghost Love Score" performance at Wacken was how the band was so on point and tight an entire hour on stage.
This performance by Epica? Equally deep into their set, but the kicker? Simone was three months preggers at the time. Most women in their third month I've known don't even want to get out of bed in the morning until they've had their AM vomit. Much less get gussied up to go out on a stage and perform under bright lights.
Though they say it's good to play music for the fetus, and that makes me wonder... what type of grade A savant is her child after being serenaded in the womb by not just her mom, but Floor as well?
I also have to ask what the hell are they doing in Scandahoovia that they are pumping out such talented vocalists, whilst here in the colonies we're stuck with auto-tuned no-talent hacks like Eilish and Beyonce? FFS Giving Billie Eilish a Grammy was a crime against music.

@@PeterM_K Scandahoovia is the slang term for Scandanavia + the Baltic states + northern Germany + the Netherlands. Basically anything in the North Sea + Baltic.
      .
As opposed to Scandanavia which is just Norway, sweden, and denmark... though some also count Faroe and Iceland.
      .
Scandahoovia -- A small yet well off country, with modern technology, very near to Smogbolia.

I discovered Epica in January of 2016, and could not believe my ears! They are just amazing! Through them I have discovered Within Temptation, Diabulus in Musica, Amaranthe, Amberian Dawn, and Edenbridge, just to name a few. Two things, when reacting to other Epica songs, many are long, ( 7mins+), and w/o YT Red, or ad blockers, there are interruptions. Second, check out The Misfit Swing by Diabulus in Musica. It's a short, and fun song. DIM is symphonic metal, but the song itself is symphonic swing metal. Much like an Amaranthe song, you won't know whether to dance or head bang, and you'll be afraid to do both for fear of hurting yourselves, and having to go to the hospital.

Oh yeah, this duet is even more amazing when you know the whole history baggage they come with (no real drama, they are all good friends or at least get along with each other now). So, in general the european Metal scene is a bit like a brasilian (or korean) afternoon drama: Everyone knows everyone, and everyone has with everyone and if not, then they have with someone that has with someone, etc.
    Well, the backstory:
In 1998 Floor Jansen, still in high school (and a fan of Nightwish and Within Temptation, among others), joined the band 'After Forever' as a background female singer (soon became female lead singer and later only singer), which was founded Mark Jansen (not related, 'Jansen' is one of the most common surnames in Netherlands). A few years later, Mark left the band, and 20-year old Floor became the sole vocalist, to manage the band and write the lyrics before she even decided where to study after school (she then ended up as one of the first students of the newly found 'Rock Academy' that was teaching everything, from basics over opera techniques to growling).
Mark Jansen left in 2002, because his new girlfriend was also a great singer and he wanted to found a new band for her and concentrate completely on that band. That girlfriend was an adorable redhead, Simone Simons and the band was Epica (and Simone was only 17 years old when it all started, btw. And little info: When she heard the band Nightwish for the first time at the age of 15, she went and got singing lessons cause she wanted to become a singer like that.).
Well, at one point Mark and Simone broke up and Mark got another girlfriend. Who was also a great singer. And he decided to found a new band for his new girlfriend (sounds familiar?). But he decided to do it as a side project, as Epica was doing exceptionally well. So, in 2010 he founded the band 'MaYaN' (where he doesn't play guitar but only sings) for his newest girlfriend, Laura Macri (italian and really a great singer). As far as I know, they are still together and both bands are going well (I don't know about american bands, but in european heavy metal it is absolutely normal for any band members to have side projects such as another band, a solo career aside from the band, being part in group or vocal collectives or other musical projects. Or to have another job.). And Simone herself has a long-time partner (which is equal to marriage), Oliver Palotai (a german multi-instrumentalist, musical journalist, orchestrator, song writer and producer from Metal to Jazz) from the US band 'Kamelot'. At this concert, Simone was pregnant with their baby.
    Back to Floor:
She enrolled in the Rock Academy, while still managing her band, producing songs and going on tour. With each new album and each live performance, one could guess the courses she had at the academy. She also joined 'Ayreon', a crazy sci-fi oriented prog-rock-metal project by probably the only person that is taller than Floor. In 2007, After Forever disbanded, Floor had some other projects going on, like her rock career, but at one point it got silent around her.
And then, at this tour in 2012/2013 Floor filled in for a hospitalized vocalist that would never come back, on the shortest notice ever. And now she is married to the swedish drummer of 'Sabaton' and they have a little girl.
I could go on forever for any other member of the above mentioned bands. But that would go on forever, so I'll stop here and just say: Every european metal festival is like a come together of old friends and aqcuaintances for most of them, and guest appearances at other bands performances is totally normal.

You aint seen nothing yet! You definitely need to react to Stabat Mater Dolorosa from the same Retrospect concert. It's a classical piece by Giovanni Batista Pergolesi, also performed with Floor Jansen. They absolutely kill it!
Btw, while you're at it, react to the entire show. It's Epica's anniversary show Retrospect, hence the orchestra and choir.
After that, start with the Dutch bands first (past & present), I promise you'll love them: After Forever (Floor), Revamp (Floor), Epica, Within Temptation, Delain, Nemesea, Ex-Libris, The Gathering, Ayreon (project band of Arjen Anthony Lucassen with ever changing line-up, including Floor from Nightwish and her sister Irene and Simone Simons from Epica), Blackbriar.
More bands in this genre: The Gathering, Within Temptation, Sirenia, Leaves' Eyes, Therion, Xandria, Delain, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Nemesea, Diabulus in Musica, Therion, Ex-Libris, Coronatus, Edenbridge, Lacuna Coil, Amberian Dawn, Dark Sarah.
More towards the gothic genre: Theatre of Tragedy, Beseech, Mono Inc., Blackbriar, Snow White Blood, The 69 Eyes, To/Die/For, The Murder of My Sweet, The Sins of Thy Beloved.
