The Battle of the Rhineland was one of the largest WW2 battles the Allies fought on German soil and part of the critical final campaign against Nazi Germany on the western front.Rhineland 45 is the most detailed documentary about the last set piece battle on the Western Front of the Second World War: The Rhineland Campaign.
The Battle for the Rhineland was a series of operations in early 1945, the dramatic finale of the Allied advance from the coast of Normandy to the borders of the Reich. The desperate German forces had managed to form a last line of defence with their backs to the Rhine - the famous river that stood between the Allies and the heart of the German Reich.
Today the Rhineland campaign (Operations Veritable, Grenade and Plunder/Varsity) is often overlooked when we remember the last weeks of World War 2. The operation and its results were already hotly debated among the Allied generals while the war was still raging. In popular memory, the Rhine crossing is mostly associated with the Bridge at Remagen the popularized narrative we know from the movie with the same name - though the brunt of the fighting happened further to the North in the Rhineland region.

The Rhineland campaign was fought on my home turf. We used to ride our bikes in a bomb crater left behind in a forest the Allies bombed, like in a halfpipe. And yet, I hardly know anything about how these battles played out. I simply must watch this, even though money is tight right now.

Sadly, as the time passes, we will not be able to have the insight of those who had been there.
That's why we should interview those who have been there. To honor their service and their memory. More importantly, we should learn from their experiences and work for a better world.

My grandpa was in the 116th 29th division in Rhineland
Germany in 1945 was like a boxer who has obviously lost but his opponent continue to pummel him to smithereens until he is beaten to a pulp.
A fighter is supposed to tap out or throw in the towel when they are beaten. Germany should have surrendered after the Battle of the Bulge, but Hitler insisted on burning down his own country.

Having watched three episodes, I am happy to say this is leaps and bounds ahead of most history documentaries.
Usually with history documentaries the whole thing gets bogged down with too much time spent in the archives, poor maps and too many interviews. The team with this have however got the top production quality of a top tier show and combined it with the outside the box thinking and great style of the humble TH-camr. Very tempted to get 16 days in Berlin as well now.

Does that include the civilian casualties done in the run-up to D-Day and during the battle of Normandy so as to deprive the Germans of railways and communications.
