Just for clarification. Another more widely believed theory is you were the bodies immune system fighting the cancer in the reporters body, hence why he kept looking worse and worse off as time went on. It's also heavily implied by some lines you kinda missed or just breezed past.
This makes sense because in the corner you can see a massive ash tray filled with cigarettes.

It’s also thought that the way you play the game is in fact a sort of recreating of the massacre, the way you interact in the game both shows a violent depiction of bloodshed as well as many other interpretations like chemotherapeutic treatment being as delicate as the sledgehammer and cancer twisting and morphing the body to be more and more dis functional.

love how they skipped past literally ALL of the dialogue explaining whats happening but read ALL of the useless dialogue then questioned whats happening

The game has a meaning behind it, you are the immunity system and the props are cancer cells, disguising as regular cells. Also a lot of hints are in the game that point towards cancer too.

and the last level is a representation of fighting off cancer
at the point hes at, its an impossible task
The whole idea of using a sledgehammer to clear out the building is meant to be a representation of how destructive chemotherapy is to the body

I love how the don't smoke signs were appearing everywhere and to the left of the screen with the newscaster more and more cigarettes piled up

I love this game, this dev made quite some great experiences. I recommend you all check them out, especially the one named Brutal Orchestra, quite an amazing turn by turn roguelike.
Basically, It's the immune system or chemeo (you) fighting the reporter guy's cancer, which makes sense since both destroy normal and cancerous cells
First saw this game in Jacob Geller's video "Gross Games about Flesh and Stuff". Definitely incredible and beautiful, aside from all the meat.

the game is an allegory for cancer.
some of the plants in the office look somewhat like bronchial tubes and it's implied that the reporter has some kind of cancer, the cigarettes pointing in the direction of lung cancer, the lungs being the location of the bronchial tubes
