    Leo Fender never wanted you to refret his electric guitar necks, he wanted you to just throw it out and buy a new neck. That's why they are manufactured with the simplicity of a garden implement. The pricing never fell in line.

    • @j_freed
      @j_freed ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually I can’t back up this claim. But there are many perfectly fine, playable guitars out of East Asia that may be cheaper to replace than refret. These are often Fender style guitars.

    • @TheSavagederek
      @TheSavagederek ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I wouldn't go that far . It was more so if the neck got damaged or if you wanted a different profile or board type ie Maple or Rosewood although originally they were all Maple , but the guitars were designed with the working musician in mind , so things could be swapped out and or renewed .

    • @ravenslaves

      @@j_freed You're correct. Interviews confirm it.

    • @j_freed
      @j_freed ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ravenslaves... what's cool is the cheapness and simplicity of a 50's one-pc maple board Fender neck - by the time the frets are well-worn, the lacquer fretboard may look quite bad...
      so, if a replacement neck were cheap enough, and easy to install in 10 minutes in a pinch, then why would you send off the guitar to strip and refinish the old worn maple neck & replace the frets, a process that may occupy the next several weeks without use of the instrument?
      For a working musician this could be much more inconvenient and costly than to swap in another mass-produced neck.

    • @honkytonkinson9787
      @honkytonkinson9787 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@j_freedmy take was that was more within the context of warranty repair at the Fender corp
      Btw, Leo didn’t design guitars, he designed amps and guitar pickups. Leo probably didn’t have much of an opinion on guitar production beyond preferring cheaper and faster. It was cheaper and faster for Fender to replace a neck with a new one, than to fix an old one. Not so for the local repair guy.

    • @ChrisEck13
      @ChrisEck13 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheSavagederek I did have the Epiphone Slash signature Firebird at one point. I loved everything about it except that the body was so light and the Kluson banjo tuners were so heavy that the neck dive was insane. I ordered a set of the Steinberger gearless tuners from Gibson but ended up trading the guitar towards a Gibson LP Trad Pro V before the tuners were in stock. So if he's going to get an Epiphone, I would recommemd either getting one that doesn't have the Kluson banjo tuners or be prepared that he may want to get different tuners for it.

    Great topic about the Fender Princeton amp.
    I play bass. For smaller gigs (without a full PA) I like to use a nice sounding Randall full tube guitar 15 watt head. First off I used it with a 1990 1x15 Trace Elliot cab I had. But it wasn’t loud enough.
    But, I loved the sound of this perticular amp and wanted my own little B-15 Ampeg kind of thing. A larger tube amp would’ve been too pricey for me at the time.
    So I got on the internet. There I learned a lot more about speakers and speakercabs. It took a while to get it. But I did in the end.
    And it really worked out for me! Volumewise it’s all about ‘sensitivity’ in DB’s, more than wattage to know how loud a speaker is. As a matter of fact: wattage doesn’t work in speakerland, it’s just used to give us ignorants an indication.
    Speakers know just two or three things:
    1. Ohms
    2. Sensitivity
    3. Frequencie.
    So, I got a low midrange PA speaker with high sensitivity that would fit with this Trace cabinet.
    It worked out just fine. The little amp works much better with the higher sensitivity PA speaker! It’s much, much louder! Two or three DB more is a hell of a lot!
    It doesn’t have as much muddy low end (nobody wants to hear), too.
    I did the same thing with some other much larger bass amp speakercabs for much larger gigs: low midrange, high sensitivity PA speakers in & the original bass speakers out (Ampeg 2x10 and 4x10’s, old 2x12 SWR’s).
    More volume (if needed) & less of the muddy ultra low frequencies onstage.
    And, they still work great with pedals that add low frequencies too, like octavers f.i. .
    Soundpeople love my cabs! All the unnecessary low frequencies they hate so much on stage have gone, but there’s still a great bass sound.
    Don’t forget: both bassguitar and guitar are mid frequency instruments.
    High sensitivity speakers are great to solve certain issues in cabs. Just check if the specific speaker will work in a specific cabinet. That’s really important, because there’s a lot of physics involved. It takes some e-mailing back and forth. But it’s really worth it!!
    🖖

      Ah the joys of the bass player lol . I found my 250watt TC combo perfect for small to medium gigs and was light enough to cart around for rehearsals. It was a 1x15 although I sometimes wish I'd got the 2x10 option .

    I use dual blackface princetons as my main stage rig - one on a small amp stand angled up and the other on an amp stand just above it pointing forward - pedal board and main guitar an older gibson les paul special with P 90s. Both amps set at 5.5 volume. Works really well. Loud as hell and easy portability.

    On the topic of the Princeton, upgrading to a 12 inch speaker of a high DB rating will seem to work wonders. Some ship this way, but I always think of the Headstrong Lil King with its very efficient GASC64 12 inch speaker (100+ db), some of the best Princeton-ish demos I’ve ever heard, and that’s got to make for a nice loud gig-worthy setup.

    I never understand why someone changes the pups, keys, bridge/trem and then say how wonderful they've made it - and then try to sell it? It just sounds BS to me, if those parts have improved the guitar that much, just take them off and replace the originals and put them on the next guitar. Am I missing something, I think I've only ever changed pups purely for looks when something comes with uncovered coils, I don't like those, but I keep the originals in the case to swap back if I sell it. I don't sell guitars btw, that would be number of guitars owned - minus 1 - that's wrong!

    Man- have any of you ever like coveted a guitar and wanted it for years and years- only to finally get to play one for more than just a minute and realize- it's not what you thought it would be, not even close? I've always wanted a real, US made, Strat- I have a couple Squires- a 70's CV and an Affinity, both HSS models. So last practice this guy who has been sitting in with us on acoustic brought his US made, 80's something model Strat for me to play- I was all excited. It's a standard SSS, cream colored, black trim, maple neck- and it sux. I mean for one- it needed a setup- he doesn't really play so he just bought it as a collector's piece- never had it setup to play. The High E string was fretting out when I would try to get a full bend anywhere near the 12th fret. But the action on ti was already so high- I would hate to have play it once you get it high enough to no longer hit the frets- 7.25 is just too small of a radius. I think about 9.25 is as small as I want to go. But all that aside- the pickups just sounded like crap man- the pickups in my CV sounded better. They really did, everyone in the band agreed. It beat the Affinity pickups but- only the bridge- the neck pickup on the Affinity sounded just as good as the US Strat. Makes things much easier for me- I can move on to a good Tele now. I don't have any version of a Tele- I think I'm going to swap the Affinity Strat for an Affinity Tele. I already have an Epi LP so I would have the holy Trinity then- the Les Paul, the Strat, and the Tele.

    • @ChrisEck13
      @ChrisEck13 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want a Tele I would encourage you to get either a Squier CV or G&L ASAT Tribute. I think the quality of both have been better than Fender the past couple years, and they're more than an Affinity but not by much and think you're getting a lot more for the little price difference.

    • @stoneysdead689
      @stoneysdead689 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisEck13 I agree- but I'm not sure I can invest the funds right now. Swapping for an Affinity Tele would require very little money to be thrown in- just have to make up for the fact that the Strat is slightly used, and the Tele isn't. But it's an HSS Strat- which costs more so- should be about even. If they want much money at all, it defeats the purpose and I'll just keep it- make it into a project guitar. But yeah- I agree, if I had the money, I'd get a purple Pete CV Tele. in a heartbeat.

In a similar automotive vein, clear vinyl wrap from the local wrap shop is pretty bullet proof and even UV rated. Guys with million dollar McClarens or GT40s will typically get a clear vinyl 3m wrap applied over their unicorn paint jobs. Anyone using ceramic-coat should absolutely wear gloves and use a cheep mask, unlike the TH-camrs that smear the shit on with bare hands and open mouths.
