Good video. Covered many good things to check. I got lucky. I found five with my smartphone. I checked them out. I found a good one. The only problem was high mileage. I had my mechanic check it out. He told me to buy it. The C5 is the best sports car you can find for the money. It is America's sports car
Congrats and enjoy!
Does it have a lift back
doing the same thing this friday too
I sold my c4 (loved that car) right after I bought my C5 LeMans Blue commemorative in April of this year. Purchased from the original owner. It’s mint. Although it’s my daily driver spring summer & fall, I’ll try like hell to keep it that way 😬
Yay, you did it like we asked! Thanks, Jim!
Have a c4 but getting ready to purchase a c5 to go with it. Great information ! VERY useful!
Awesome. Good luck.
Great video. Thanks for the info.
Very helpful, thank you.. I am starting my journey to purchasing a C5 or C6 with research first.. cheers!
No prob. The C6 should be very similar...
Hi Jim..any thoughts on checking for the apparently common issue of a dangerous fuel leak at the crossover tube area? Strong fuel smell, dampness behind/under driver’s seat? I am doing my research before purchasing, and this alleged issue is scary to say the least with regards to parking in the garage, burning the house down etc.
@@Adlorne I have not heard of this. What I have heard of and experienced is if you fill it to the gills, it will seam like a gas leak and be apparent in the garage for a C5 at least.
Great video . Thanks Jim
Glad you enjoyed it
I’m really happy I found this video, thank you so much for all the useful information! You’ve got a new subscriber
Welcome!
Throw the harmonic balancer and steering rack in there as well. Cause if mechanically not inclined this could easily become a high ticket for such an affordable car.
Just looked at a 2004 with 110,000 mi and sure enough the harmonic balancer is wiggling a little and it appears the radiator has a leak
@@zr1sparky1 no biggie, plenty of nice aftermarket high performance parts. Not too difficult to install and still a fun and inexpensive project car to tinker with.
EXCELLENT VIDEO
That was very helpful thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful!
Good tips, thank you!
Your welcome!
Love my 2000 triple black 6 spd convert
wow great info.
I'm 13. love the c5 corvette, saving up some money so I can hopefully buy one in a couple years.
Save at least 15k
Koolio C i've been walking dogs and mowing lawns. Slowly but surely I hope to reach that 15k mark( im also considering a c6)
@Julian Ardire lmao, not anymore, it's easier than ever to save that much at a young age.
I am too you’ll get it one day👍🏼 hard work pays off the only thing ima worry is the cost of parts and all😂
Just to let you know you also have insurance and at a young age it will be way more with a two door sports car.
Know which models have the good EBCMs in them. Check for weathered weatherstrip around the entire targa top, where the body meets the doors, and the rear hatch. Water leaks are very common in C5s if the weatherstripping is weathered.
It is hard to find good quality weather stripping for replacement at this point in time. And they want $1500.
Very nice information for future new car buyers. Do you happen to have the C5 spreadsheet so I don't have to figure out what I should add?
Just grab the info from the video and description.
I wanna buy this car once I'm 19 I thank you for this
Sure thing...
The problem with the battery leak is that the computer is right under it. So, battery acid can drip on the computer and worse, the harness for it and really screw things up.
I got lucky when buying a 2001 model. The two previous owners had babied the car and had always been serviced by GM dealerships. The car looked and drove like it was brand new for 175K on it.
has the car been reliable?aa
@@diegogolfhotel I've had to replace the TPM sensors cause the batteries were dead or going to be dead. The power steering rack has a leak but I'm rebuilding it now as we speak. I could have kept putting in Lucas power steering stop-leak but no I want it done correctly with new seals. Other than those items the car has been a real treat.
@@markwarren7959 thanks for the reply! Hope the car is smooth sailing from now on
@@diegogolfhotel on a side note, I replaced the harmonic balancer for peace of mind but it looked fine.
Wow at 175k I’m looking to buy a 2003 w 130k
If I'm buying a C5 and had not had one before, I don't have a manual to look up how to pull and clear the DIC codes. Would have been nice if you included how to do that that in this video.
Hello. It is way too much information for this video. Best to have print outs of all the codes since there is a ton of them and video tape the codes as they go across the screen. This way you can look them on the sheet.
There are many videos here to show you everything you need to know
Just bought an 03 vert in spiral grey. Unseen....really hope im ok
do you think this car would be a good first car?
I got lucky and bought a clean well maintained 02. 101k and looks new. Owner put new wheels and tires, new AC controller, and new brakes before trading it in. I had it checked and they said it was perfect, needed nothing. Oil Change $146. ✔
That is awesome!
I bought a great one, I want to change tires because these are older tires as the car has sat. They are all run flats and some roads make the car go all over the place. Looked today and looks like alot of run flats are not going to be made til next season. Any tips. Also I do get a steering wheel sensor code very randomly.
Sorry, I never had run flats so I do not know. Not familiar with that particular code either. :(
First, I say that the C5 was one of the best. I drove one for 7 years and it was bought new. It cost a small fortune to drive. Now that these cars are old, if you want one you need some accessories.....a pile of money, an ace mechanic, and a crystal ball to find parts!
I the only problem with this is dont look for a vette to pass this list and be cheap u guys want to nit pick cars and then dont want to pay the price
Btw any chance of you sharing the Excel file?
Link to the downloadable ChrisFix Used Car Inspection Checklist:
goo.gl/uqaWYa Just add the few corvette specifics from there. Thanks!
If u push any button after going into DIC mode it will go into manual mode so u can see every code individual. Dont have to film anything with your phone. And if u push reset u can clear then too
Good comment
@Sunday Drive They should reappear if the issue still exist.
@Sunday Drive Could be a big Zero. Need to vet the codes. The Harmonic balancer is attached to the main crankshaft that holds all the pistons. If just the harmonic balancer itself needs to be replaced, its a simple inexpensive fix. $80 part + labor. But if the whole crank is wobbling, then major engine overhaul. This could be a diamond in the rough if you take it to a shop before commitment and verify its a simple fix. Otherwise $4000+ repair.
Bottom line do your initial check......if you decide it’s a car you want to purchase have a professional pre purchase inspection it’ll be the best money you’ll spend!
I tried that with one corvette owner and he would not give me the time of day. So I returned the favor and did not buy his car.
I have a 2003 C5 Coupe for sale 74k everything work except head up display very good condition. Does anybody know how much Anniversary Corvette go for?
8-15K. It would have to me Mint condition to get a high return with that many miles on it. Since you have a few things to fix and most cars are not mint, could be 10K. However, there is a bump in used car prices at the moment.
@@StreetRodJim as far as I know just the head display has issue the motor is working up & down but not moving the screen a/c newly installed condenser, bought it for my wife at 18k miles it’s her daily driver no accident, I personally changed the oil on schedule, transmission serviced at dealer at 65k. Thanks for responding
@@jjd1239 where you located? I’ve been trynna find a C5 forever after selling my C4
@@wackysamurai1583 misprint 74k miles, SF Bay Area, Ca
@@jjd1239 damn I’m in Utah, but for the right price..I’ll definitely consider it. corvettes here are pretty pricy with higher mileage
Do you do work for others?
Not at the moment. I have a multi year backlog of personal projects I can't get too ...
Wrong! I love my C5 and it’s well cared for and I have 2 different tires up front. Like the video but that was a silly comment.
so, in one sentence, look under the car for damage, and look for codes to ignore. Got it.
Ahhhh...You might want to review the video again....
to answer the question posed in the thumbnail, hand the seller the money they ask for.
Watch this. It might change your statement. th-cam.com/video/t6xMs58KC-4/w-d-xo.html
Why does this sound like a dad convincing his son not to get a corvette
These are OLD cars. They will ALL have damage and wear somewhere. Don't get too picky trying to find a perfect car.... there are no perfect C5s, and if there were, they would cost way too much.
Man, if you're looking to buy a 16 year old sports car, the simple fact that it even starts should be good enough. This list is over-kill....
Says the man who only buys new cars or certified cars that go through a 167 point inspection.... LOL
Corvettes are generally well taken care of. Mine was 12 years old with 80,000 MI. It looked like it was on the showroom floor
@@StreetRodJim I don’t buy from the Stealership, but thanks for playing...
