    Excellent breakdown. I'd also add, Lanning has been studying Chip's offense for 3 years, beat Chip when he had a higher ranked team at the time, and knows the running back coach and what he expects from the backs. Going to be a great game.

    Caleb Downs should be able to get after this Oregon offense. He's excellent at reading and reacting and has a knack for knifing in and getting guys down behind the line of scrimmage on dump off passes behind the line.
    If he's not occupied in coverage, he could run up and stop Bruno Mars because he only leaks out on the perimeter when he runs.

    Every year in College Football we see some marquee matchups play out in an extremely lopsided manner. I'm surprised to hear almost zero discussion of how this may turn into a blowout. To me, this is as likely to be a blowout as it is to be a wire to wire close game. Ben Gretch (NFL Writer) frequently writes about "input volatility" in the sense that sometimes we get fundamental things wrong about matchup and it results in our analysis being very far from what plays out on the field. Have either of you given any thought to this?
    For example, if we take Oregon's rushing defense numbers at face value (They're poor) and Ohio State's at face value (They're awesome) then you'd expect Ohio State to dominate the trenches which would bode well for a big Ohio State win. Every analyst is discounting the numbers, which seems reasonable given the context of each team's seasons. What if the discount isn't warranted? What if Ohio State stops Oregon's rushing offense effectively and runs all over Oregon themselves? The numbers would suggest that to be the case, but we're pretending like it can't happen.
    I understand that a neutral show put on by Ohio State beat writers needs to be careful about perceived bias, but it seems like an incomplete analysis to not even consider that this game might be a blowout considering how often these types of games are. (A blowout for either team, not just Ohio State as in my example)

    I think the one player, the one position that neither of you mentioned is safety. Caleb Downs could be the IT factor for the defense. You mentioned a DE, a DT and a CB for Oregon as disruptive forces. I counter with Tyler n Ty, Jack Sawyer, Denzel Burke and Caleb Downs. But remember vs Penn St...this is the type of game JTT goes off

    Some context on Jeanty's performance. 25 for 192... He had a 70-yard TD, 17, and 31. maybe 1 other over 10 yards. If you take off the 2 big plays, thats less than 4 yards a carry. I think this is context to go along with Oregon so far as a whole... mistakes have been there, but the good is very good.

      Doug is going full KOTN. He's hedging his bet by picking Oregon at home. By him not even mentioning Caleb Downs or that this is the kind of game JTT goes off(Penn St), he has the 3pt home field advantage excuse.

    Tressel faced a healthy Michigan program when it was still a machine and both schools were pretty even. Tressel went 6-1 in that era, winning both as the favorite and underdog, including a National Championship. Then he got three freebies that he easily lapped up during Michigan's self-destructive RichRod years before he was caught lying to NCAA investigators about Ohio State's pervasive cheating and had to resign in shame, resulting in 12 vacated wins and a postseason ban. Because Ohio State and its fans are very forgiving of NCAA violations, they still love him, welcome him back, going so far as to put him in their Hall of Fame. He earned those accolades and recognition.
    Urban Meyer's legendary 7-0 record started with closer-than-they-should-have-been games against the flailing Brady Hoke. But 3-0 is 3-0, plus there was a National Championship. Then Meyer really did earn his Michigan-beating bona fides in the Harbaugh era. All of Harbaugh's teams were good to great teams (maybe not 2017), and with the exception of 2016, they were all historically dominating (except for 2017). As an aside, some believe he was aided in the last historic beat down by taking advantage of stolen signs, but as stealing signs is legal, it is on Michigan to better protect them. But I digress. He then had to retire due to health reasons (before he took the Jacksonville job a few years later) with a cloud of controversy hanging over him for having provided a safe harbor for Zach Smith. But in spite of the questionable moral values of Urban Meyer, because Ohio State and its fans are so forgiving, they still love him and welcome him back, going so far as to have him teach a "Leadership and Character" class at their business school. He earned those accolades and recognition.
    Ryan Day started off on the same track (the one that had been laid down by Urban Meyer). He badly beat a 9-win Michigan team and made the CFP. Then in 2020, after lobbying the Big Ten to play through a global pandemic because the SEC was going to, he then led his team to the CFP title game, in part due to the Big Ten changing its rules midstream to ensure that Ohio State was eligible for the Championship game instead of Indiana, and also perhaps in part due to their Covid-19 practice contact violations, as was pointed out by Harbaugh at a Big Ten meeting, leading to Ryan Day telling his team that they would "hang 100" on Michigan, leading to (the following year) Harbaugh responding with the comment that some people are born on third base and think they hit a triple, "but they didn't."
    The reason the "3rd base" sticks, as Doug said, is because despite the dominating win in 2019 (when aided by the legal act of stealing signs, but still being the only team in that competition engaging in such actions), he has been unable to realize the success that Tressel and Urban had, even when they had to face similar challenges (i.e., a Michigan team that had its shit together). Those coaches won a National Championship. Those coaches beat Michigan when Michigan was excellent (and also when they were bad). All Day had to do was beat Michigan in 2021, 2022, and 2023 and at least one the titles from the 3 CFPs he was in. That's what his predecessors were able to do. That's what he assumed he would be able to do, as well. "We're gonna hang 100." I mean, I'm standing here on third base, aren't I? How hard can it be?
    But in spite of those failures, because Ohio State and its fans are so forgiving, they...uh...love...him? Or maybe they don't? It's complicated, I guess.
    Lucky for him, he has a chance to totally redeem himself. Yes, it's true, his redemption will have to come in the form of a win over a decidedly not good Michigan team. And then he probably also has to cap that off with a National Championship. But maybe, at the end of going 16-0, with a win at home to even up his record at 1-1 against Sherrone Moore, and a National Title, maybe then, and only then, will people finally remember his name. But they never learned Mike D'Antonio's.

      Ohio State's pervasive cheating? What are you talking about? So selling your Big Ten rings and jerseys is tantamount to cheating?

    • @BenMichigan
      @BenMichigan 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@michaelthompson729 Correct. Under the NCAA rules at the time, it was against the rules to provide such benefits to players. Ohio State cheated by using ineligible players. That was the cause of the NCAA's investigation which resulted in the vacated wins.

      @@michaelthompson729 Not really sure what your objection is to an objectively true statement, but by all means, feel free to mentally replace the word "cheating" with whatever synonym your prefer, as long as it conveys that rules were broken in an effort to increase the likelihood of success. It doesn't really change my overall point, which was about how Tressel and Meyer set an incredibly high standard that makes them beloved at OSU, despite departing from OSU under a cloud of controversy and scandal, while Day has been unable to meet this lofty standard, yet believed he was preordained to achieve the same success by virtue of being the OSU coach, leading to the 3rd base comment which "sticks," as Doug put it, because of his failures, which also results in no one in the South bothering to remember his name, apparently.
