    Lyrics:

Boris Ivanovich Fomin (Борис Иванович Фомин, 12 April 1900, Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire, - 25 October 1948, Moscow, USSR) was a Soviet musician and composer who specialized in the Russian romance.
Several of Fomin's songs became popular in 1920s, most notably "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" (Russian: Дорогой длинною, By Endless Road), commonly known for its English version "Those Were the Days", made world-famous in 1968 by Mary Hopkin and credited to Eugene Raskin who in 1962 wrote the English lyrics for the tune and claimed the song for his own. It was composed by Boris Fomin in 1924, first interpreted and recorded by Tamara Tsereteli (1925) and Alexander Vertinsky (1926); it was the latter who popularized it abroad.[1][2][3]

    ChatGPT offers this interpretation:
This is a poem in Russian by Ivan Petrovich Larionov, titled "By the long road". Here's a translation:
"By the long road, we rode in a troika with jingling bells,
And in the distance flickered lights...
Oh, if only now I could follow you,
To ease my soul of its sadness!
By the long road, in moonlit weather,
With that song that rings out into the distance,
With the old and the seven-stringed,
That tormented me so at night.
It seems we sang for nothing,
Burning night after night in vain.
If we're finished with the old,
    Then those nights have passed!
From now on, we must travel
Towards our native lands by new paths!
...We rode in a troika with jingling bells,
    But now that's long gone!"

    • @BarryKort
      @BarryKort ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ChatGPT further explains:
«This is a Russian song called "Dorogoi Dlinnoyu" (By the long road).
On a long road, they rode in a troika with bells ringing, and in the distance, lights flickered. The singer longs to be with someone and have their soul lifted from sadness. They reminisce about singing with this person, with the moon shining and a song that echoes into the distance. They realize that they sang and burned through nights in vain, and now that they've moved on, those nights have passed. They look forward to traveling new paths to their homeland, but the troika ride with bells was long ago.»

  • @ellococatra

    Beautifully done!
    In English, the original words would be something like this;
Once we drove a triple team with bells on,
And in the distance, lights their twinkles play'd...
Could I but on Falcon's wings fly to you-
Dispelling anguish from my soul away..
    The Long Long Road resumes,
    In nights by moon illum'ed,
    And with that song,
    The distance flies away!
    Yes, with that ancient tune,
    With seven strings played through,
    The memory of that night
    So torments me!
    Lai-la-la-la-la-la-la ...
Now it seems we sang so well for nothing,
Night by night I burned as bright as day.
Maybe doors have closed upon the old times
Like those nights it all has passed away...
    The Long Long Road resumes...
To the distant future lead new pathways
On them, we are destined now to go.
Once we drove a triple team with bells on,
That was then, a long long time ago...

Once upon a time there was a tavern, Where we used to raise a glass or two Remember how we laughed away the hours And dreamed of all the great things we would do Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la... Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
