    Hey Mark, loving the tutorials. Couldn't you use a reflector rather than a kicker light in this example?

    • @stanspb763
      @stanspb763 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A reflector could work but it requires experimenting with distance and angle while a kicker has an accurate repeatable light power so set ups between poses or models is more consistent. That is particularly important in head shots where often a large number of portraits are done for different subjects. For example corporate head shots or in my case actors where I might to 20-60 subjects in a short period of time. For portability, I just use a speedlight that is RF remotely controlled which is small, light and means I can go to a remote shoot with everything in one backpack and 2 collapsible light stands. I often use large reflectors and v-flats in the studio and more complex lighting formulas.

    Putting a 1/4 CTO in front of the hair might give given a little warmer light (seems light the kicker was a bit cold). Just a thought!

    • @michaelmorrison4846
      @michaelmorrison4846 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ,...pretty sure it would, but if you were paying attention, the video was about creating depth, not about warm or cold,....or anything else.

    good video. I always think of lights in terms of power vs f stops, so that's a bit confusing. any videos to explain that? thx.

    • @stanspb763
      @stanspb763 ปีที่แล้ว

      A light meter removes and confusion since it is not concerned with power, but on measure light falling on the subject, regardless of distance or modifier attenuation. A decent incident light meter speeds up any session a lot and has a faster pay-back than almost anything else in the kit. I used one alot in the film era but when I went digital I was living far from home, 7000 miles, so had a minimal kit. Last spring I finally got another and it made a dramatic change in session duration

    Great video as usual. A tactical question ..... Someone wanted to give me a well-intended tip for an upcoming fotoshoot. They told me to have my model not look at me (into the camera) all the time with each shot as this would tend to look a bit rigid and boring. They suggested that the model look past me or away or to the side etc.etc. I said, I like the model to look at me because I get a better connection with the eyes. So what is right?

      Es solo un estilo de iluminación que normalmente es halagadora para la mayoría de rostros, disminuye la sombra debajo de la barbilla, y debajo de la nariz , los ojos quedan bien iluminados, aun asi produce volumen, si te fijas en los ojos el destello de la luz esta colocada a las tres. examinar la imagen el minuto 1:44 y 5:22 .

    I get confused when it's said that the kicker light will be set to a stop less when, going from f8.0 to f5.6 is actually going to more open, brighter, right? Are you referring to the f number, or to the size of the aperture opening? Please explain. Thank you.

    • @sitthixayditthavong6468
      @sitthixayditthavong6468 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The kicker light is a stop less, ie half as bright as the main light. As the main light is exposed correctly at f/8, then the kicker, being half as bright, has a reading on the light meter of f/5.6. The numbers let you know the relative intensity of each light in the photo.

    • @Burritosarebetterthantacos
      @Burritosarebetterthantacos 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No its metered down to accommodate the lens being more open which means less light needed. So metered for f8 vs f5...f8 needs more light for smaller opening. If course I may be wrong so id look it up.

    • @stanspb763
      @stanspb763 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The meter is reporting the aperture needed to fully expose the image at the shutter speed and ISO selected. The main light is metering for f/8. The kicker light meter reports for full exposure would require a larger aperture of 5.6. Since he is shooting at a smaller f/8 aperture, the kicker would be 1 stop lower than the level required to expose the contribution of the kicker fully. It is an easy way of visualizing the contribution of multiple light sources. A good light meter makes shooting more efficient with less trial and error but it can be done without one by visualizing the contribution of each light source.

    That kicker light is much too strong and makes the light look unnatural. Also the hair in front of the face makes it always slimmer.

    • @catielang2582
      @catielang2582 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, I felt the kicker light made it worse. He was saying it “added dimension” but the first photos with her face kind of shadowed had dimension, not the flat bright look of the kicker light. I was really confused lol
