The written article by the Washington Post has so many more details and nuance than what was included in this video. I wish more of it was covered in the video. It touched on what he does for a living, how he grew up & developed an interest in learning languages, and even problems he has in life. It also showed some aspects of his personality.

Interesting segment. I was a Russian linguist, and assisted with languages I also had knowledge of. A motorcycle accident 17 years ago caused head trauma that effected the language center. I have now developed dysphasia, I will know the meaning of the word I want, but the word will come up in multiple languages. Some days it takes longer to form sentences while speaking because I have to sort through too many options to find the right language.

I read the related Washington Post article with a lot of interest. I'm in no way comparable to this amazing man, but as someone who grew up speaking three languages and learnt German by self-study (and later at university-level) to become fluent, and then started learning 4 more languages, I have developed a special interest in this topic. Vaughn Smith is a genius - can't wait to see him get his due. We would like him to share his methods and processes for all language enthusiasts.

These stories of hyper-polyglots are entertaining, even awe-inspiring. We get them every year or two in newspapers or on tv; the internet is littered with them. Yet each year, inexorably, beyond its communities of heritage language speakers, North America sadly becomes ever more aggressively uni-lingual
@Shawn Geo-location? Canada's geo-location is more conducive to unilingualism, yet there is considerably more second language learning and openness to second language learning than in the US. A smart country contiguous to Mexico would have large numbers of enthusiastic Spanish speakers. Instead we find worst in class language education and retrograde anti-immigrant English-only political movements in places where bilingualism should otherwise flourish
Interesting. So some people exercise 30 minutes a day, and others study languages. I always say how much you know has nothing to do with how fast or easily you learn, but how much you care about learning about whatever it is you want to know.
Or you can do both at the same time.
15 minute a day learning a language. 1 hour 4 times a week in the gym. Do the language learning inbetween sets in the gym

Very interesting article in WP, I live in Australia so language learning was never a big thing at school. Over the years I have tried to learn Indonesian, Japanese, French and Spanish. Except for Spanish I spent at least 6 months trying to learn the other languages over the years. Spanish is the one language I have kept trying to learn for many years, taken classes, immersion classes in Mexico and Duolingo. I have trouble trying to retain vocabulary, but keep trying. Very interesting to hear Vaughn’s story.
I wonder if they look at Steve Kaufmann brain,he started older than him when learned multiple languages

Actually man has two kind of memories. One is the common memory, it is analogue. It changes constantly, forgets, interpretes, add lies and nonsense, projects etc. One can also name it as man's working memory. And there is a digital memory, where the perceptions of all the senses are digitally stored from the moment of our birth till the moment we die. The digital memory, common man is not aware of. He relies completely on the working memory. makes many mistakes, forget a lot. Very few people have the gift to rely on the digital memory, They have not really to study, just listening, reading, observing and synchronizing with what is already in the digital memory makes that they can without real effort master a lot of musical instruments, languages etc. When their brains are scanned in action, not much activity can be seen since the digital memory is not dependent on the brain.

There's no proper way to speak a language. Just different ways.
It makes wonder whether more people would discover this capability - or more modest version of it - if they simply tried learning one or more additional languages.

If we could all speak another 2 or more languages then the world would be a better place and we would be able to better understand life’s problems.

I am a bilingual and do have and always have had an interest in learning another language. However, because of outside forces, and disabilities I have, picking up another language has been difficult for me.
I currently have a MAJOR interest in Japanese (since so was a kid) and Korean, and an interest in Dutch and Italian, since Italian is pretty close to Spanish.
I am Puerto Rican, so my Spanish is different from Mexican/Latin American Spanish, but even then my Spanish is sub par now that I’m an adult, even though I grew up speaking Puerto Rican Spanish and still do at home and unfortunately at work, where I’m… not really as useful as I should be.
I WISH I could have the abilities a polyglot has. They’re incredible.
Most Americans can’t even speak one.
I understand French and I am learning German. My problem is learning vocabulary. Once I have vocabulary I can listen to speech, and piece the language together. But the learning of vocabulary is so slow.

Of all the savant abilities, polyglot is one of the best, you can go to many places and speak with everyone and can get jobs that let you travel the world

Well, I get it. I speak 4 languages. When I'm thinking, I could be using any grammatica, structure, but some times, there are words more precise in one language or another, so my thoughts are things like "she sounded quite monóntona, so me lateé y decided to cherche autre chose more gezellag to doen in this place"

His spanish is pretty good that's for sure, he really speaks like a Mexican. Some people are very talented for languages and some are not at all, that's my scientific explanation !
Because some of his family is from Mexico. So, it is logic.
That theory is falsified by the fact that everyone speaks at least one language and most speak at least two.

I'm friends with the man in this video and he was fluent in many languages long before apps even existed. we were at a barbecue in the early 2000s and he was already fluent in 17 languages, including all european languages except irish and finnish (i think he said that was bc those languages had different roots). if I understand your comment correctly, you think he's a fraud and you should know that he's not. the human brain is incredible
You yourself are a self proclaimed “polyglot” and quite arrogant as a matter fact, it’s a miracle you have any subscribers. Also you are only fooling monolingual people with your content, you don’t speak any of your languages higher than an A2 level ..if you’re lucky. Hope you grow up one day

Of course not.
Unfortunately I doubt it. If you’ve ever been to a local bazaar, flea market, food court, or mall kiosks, the vendors usually can speak at least 3 languages or more & they’re just selling anything from cosmetics & clothing to toys & food without ever becoming super wealthy

Come in, how much, too much, that's good, good quality, the best, beautiful, cheaper, cheapest, change, no change, no credit card accepted, the machine is broken. I just experienced that while traveling the Middle East. I do wonder how much of the 24 languages this man can really speak. I speak, Spanish, English, Italian (B2) and a bit of French, but in reality, I can honestly say that I am fluent only in Spanish :)

The Washington Post article lists Dutch as one of the languages with which he can carry on "simple conversations". It is not one the languages that he says he can speak fluently.

No matter what our job is or who we appeal to, i believe we all have a purpose while we are here and when we follow that we can really shift things in our world for the best.
Who cares?? Many care because speaking several languages gives you a much better understanding of, and exposure to different cultural and intellectual landscapes, and you can know that only when you speak at least one other language than your own. It provides you with an extra pair of glasses, so to speak, with which to see the world, and what's out there.
Look up “Xaioman” he learns all in days to weeks. Even is reviving lost languages. Xaiomanyc
