  • Hello everyone yes I have another tutorial up on eyes. You might want to watch this one all the way through. I discovered something about paints and what they do.
    Also check out this youtube creator Celsea Mastin who took my drilling idea but added a different way of creating the iris. Link will be below. She did an awesome job.

    Note when drilling glass wear protective eye ware, mask, and use a drop of water to prevent chipping or shatter.
    Can't find the products check out my Amazon store. Here I have put together supplies I have used and using. Some people cannot find products in there local craft stores.

    Disclaimer: I belong to Amazon Affiliated Program. This means by you purchasing or clicking on links I have for you. I will make a small commission. This does not make the prices go up for you at all. It's only an avenue for me to keep bringing you more videos. Its a great way to support any youtube creator. Thank you all so much.
    Materials used
    Pure milk white glass beads
    drill with diamond bit call a burr
    apoxie sculpt to fill in hole (you can use what works for you)
    Glass paints (transparent this will give the watery affect)
    uv gel I used magic glos
    uv light

    OH WOW BARBARA!!!!!!! This is fantastic!! Great idea to draw out iris with ruler circle. It makes centering pupil w bead hole a breeze! I might have to buy some of those enamel translucents too. Definitely a homerun! I'm working on an octopus project and they have some crazy eyes! Might go full out glitter, metallic and do some experimenting with fantasy/angelica film. Thank you so much for linking ME and sharing your creativity. GO Barbara, GO!!!

    Got to get that ruler! I know what you mean about flat looking eyes...not only are they flat flat but they don't have dimension and light which I think the dome shape introduces. It's an amazing difference when you dome them!
    Gorgeous eyes!

    Love it. Awesome research; I love all your experimentation. I'm still trying to perfect my doll eyes. I've tried so many different techniques, it's crazy. I wonder how Genesis paint would do on glass, I imagine just fine. Wondering because I don't want to buy the glass paint if I don't have to. Also thinking I'll drill and paint the eyes and then add them to my raw clay and sculpt my doll head. After I've done all my baking, then I'll add the Magic Gloss. I've had problems with the Magic Gloss after baking it...turned yellowish, but maybe I did something wrong. Only issue with adding the Magic Gloss after baking would be if I had eye lids covering some of the iris... hmmmm. You got me thinking eyes again. Thanks so much for your videos! :)

      @fairysnmypond  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your welcome and glad to hear it has you thinking lol. It has taken me 3years just to get to this tutorial. I just never gave up. I did take breaks LOL... I don't know about oil paint on glass I think it would wipe off. If so it could cause problems when applying the uv gel. The drilling was really what the whole effect I was going for and I was always trying to get it with paint. Just didn't work for me. I never had magic glos yellow on me but again we all have different problems. I really solved so many problems with the eyes and that is by making the head hollow. Now you have ever option possible and no more going through having to put the head back in the oven with the rest of the doll. Just make the head so the neck can attach to the upper torso. You still can have a solid body its not always just for bjd.

    You are going to burn out your little drill motor by pressing down so hard. Listen to the sound of the motor...hear it slowing down? Then, it speeds back up. Let your bits do the work. They cut much better if you're not pushing down on them. They cut by spinning, if they spin too slowly they will start to produce too much heat and scorch you material. The brown marks you're seeing. Hope this helps. 💕

    I think what you're trying to say is instead of a hook is you are creating a lip or an undercut to create a lock. I only know this because I worked in a dental lab making porcelain teeth for many years. Great tutorial following and am going to Bing watch because your tutorials are very informative. The best on YT.

    What size is the bit on your drill and what is it called? Will manicure balls work or do you need a full drill? I found some of those white glass stones in Dollar tree and Dollar General, thought i might try that. So far it hasnt turned brown.

    • @fairysnmypond

      Its called a burr and they come in all sizes. Knowing what size will determine what size eye you have. I have only used a drill.

    Thank for taking the time to show your tutorials I appreciate them I do have a question would it be possible to use alcohol in instead of the paint ?

    • @fairysnmypond
      @fairysnmypond  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Larraine thank you for commenting. Great question and this is what I experienced trying alcohol inks. First, after I drilled out the iris the hole can be quite rough. And don't forget you must seal up the little hole or everything will seep out. I tried two ways here and one was I only filled the little hole. Then I hand sanded the iris after I drilled. Everything was going quite well until I filled the iris up with the magic glos. Between the two mediums, it lifted the ink somewhat and it became not so dried. This caused the magic glos (after cured) to pop out. Then I tried instead of sanding out the iris to just line the inside of the iris with some 2 part apoxie. After tried when inks applied it absorbs into the apoxie and gave it a very dark color. Even tried lightening the inks with more alcohol and I didn't capture a pretty eye. This is only my experience and I would truly suggest trying it out for yourself. You might have better results or another way around what I tried. I think it's a great idea I personally couldn't capture a pretty color. I would be interested in hearing your results if you decide to try it. Thank you again for the nice comment as well.

    You need to get yourself a "Pony Vise" to hold those glass beads before you injure yourself using that dremel. It only takes one slip and 1/10th of a second at those speeds . You can pick one up at Home Depot or your local hardware store for a little over $20.00. and a small sheet of 1/4' rubber (ask the clerk) to use to sandwich them in the vice to not damage the finish of the beads.

    I just have a question. How do you figure out the size of the bead you use to start? What is the size of the beads you use for the most part? Is there a calculation for the size, or is it just what looks best to you. I have tried using 6 and 8 mm beads and they seem too big. The 4 mm seem too small. Or maybe I'm just not making the iris big enough. Please help. Thanks. Always love your tutorials.

    • @fairysnmypond
      @fairysnmypond  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +24Tstone Some very good questions and here are my thoughts. First I start sculpting the head. The head gives me the size of what the body should be. Now comes the eyes. It will always depend on the shape and size eye I have sculpted into the clay. It can be a very large eye or it can be small. I wouldn't say to anyone that there is a scale that we need to follow. It will be up to the creator. Really 6 and 8 mm are a nice size to work with and I have used them on 9 1/2" doll. But she had like hooded eyes. It really sounds to me you might be seeing the iris to be either to small. Go a little bigger with the iris when you see it to be small. But with me not seeing it just make sure you do have some whites of the eye. You can send me pic and I can look at your eyes and maybe will be able to help more.

    Hi, I was wondering what the 1 year mark of the eyes looked like? Was there any yellowing or separation? Thanks for your great tutorials :D

    • @fairysnmypond
      @fairysnmypond  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think your referring to the magic glos resin. I have been using this resin since it came out and making eyes with it. I haven't ever seen it turn yellow. As an answer to separation which I think you mean if the resin separates from the edges of the dug out iris. When using glass beads never. When using polymer clay it can be a different story in some cases, that is separating and then lens can pop out. If someone is having that problem of popping out then I would suggest filling the iris with a little apoxie sculpt, let dry and your set to make them.

      primer built and shine
      everytime u need to sand surface to put another coat.
      they have a differences in thicknes.
      build gel alone wont give you a high shine.

Some may look a little different but they all do the same. Here's a link that I just pulled up m.lowes.com/pd/Dremel-100-11-Piece-Rotary-Tool-Kit/50037162?cm_mmc=SCE_PLA_ONLY-_-ToolsAndHardware-_-RotaryAndOscillatingTools-_-50037162:Dremel&CAWELAID=&kpid=50037162&CAGPSPN=pla&k_clickID=953f3e36-2881-45d3-b4d8-50320b9bf1a1&gclid=CjwKCAjwoKDXBRAAEiwA4xnqv4TdeYKmw_gToIWX2LgdiSBE1BuuTpVwItJ9JcRia2rtA8xi2YEd7BoCHe8QAvD_BwE

      The ones in the video are 12 CM they are large. I chose those so that we could see more of the detail in the video. But there are other sizes as well you just have to really search to find them. For me if I were to use these eyes it would go into a doll about 12 in. The size of the head would be about 3 inches.

      +Sharon Aur In my experience with cloudy eyes is if you use femo gel a liquid polymer clay. I never experience eyes going cloudy with uv gel or even resin. They will get oily from the clay and will be on top of the iris not inside the eye to make them become cloudy. So you should be ok.

      +Sharon Aur I also meant to say I wipe the eye with rubbing alcohol and it take the oil off of the iris and brings the shine right back. I would suggest testing the eyes you bought before you put them in your doll.

      +Fairysnmypond The woman I'm buying my eyes from uses white polymer for the white of the eye and clear casting resin with some catalyst, so to my knowledge she doesn't use femo gel ? Do you use the rubbing alcohol after the head is cured or before ? How do I test the eyes ? sorry for all the questions ! and thank you so much for your help. Sharon

    Can't find glass beads

      Try on the internet with white milk glass beads. Sometimes you will find them on a necklace. As long as they are glass and your white it doesn't matter if it's on a necklace or individual.

    you should ALWAYS ware a mask, and protected eye wear, along with using water when you are drilling, or using any power tool to cut glass. Water keeps the glass from shattering when it over heats, and also prevents most glass shards from flying around you. It is extremely dangerous the way you are doing this.

    • @fairysnmypond
      @fairysnmypond  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Anitra Duke I stated in my tutorial eye wear and mask. As for what Im doing it does not over heat I wouldn't be holding it with my fingers.

    • @anitraduke3616
      @anitraduke3616 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't over heat the entire glass object. Being a mosaic artists I have had glass fracture if I wait t long to add more water. It doesn't take much hear for glass to splinter and shatter. Not to mention it keeps the dust from the drill down and out of your environment. It really only takes a drop of water to work on something that small. That is why you get the reaction on some glass, it is over heating.

      I totally understand what your explaining. I will add the water to my warning of wearing protective eye ware and mask. Thank you for pointed out the water.

      +Fairysnmypond your welcome, someone that doesn't work with glass all of the time doesn't realize how easy it is for glass to over heat. You only have to have something shatter in your hand once to figure it out.

    I think it would have been more useful if the yes were all the same colour. Instead you did a one colour and a bicolour set, of course the green one looks flat and no depth...you only used one colour! No one's eyes are just one colour.

    • @fairysnmypond

      This video was only to show different not so much with two eyes the same and for each to think on there own other then what I did. Thank you anyways for viewing and leaving me a comment.

    • @cnith2
      @cnith2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I get that, but the thing is, it's an unfair comparison. You can't say "this is better" or I prefer this because it looks better when you've done a bad job with one of them. Had you done a proper eye with the green, we could see the difference between the two medias. But you didn't.

    • @fairysnmypond
      @fairysnmypond  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well thats your opinion and in my opinion I would say there is no such thing as unfair. This video was not made to be fair or unfair. It was based on just sharing and for other people to form there own ideas off of mine. Thank you anyways but please move on to something that gives you what your looking for. What I do share on my channel many many are so appreciative and your just one thats seems to be just wanting something to pick at.

    The green one looks more like a real eye.
