Damn! I'm super sad about the lost footage but this series has been awesome so far. It's so amazing to see your mom and Fancy hike like total badasses on trail! My mom recently hiked 5 miles of the PCT with me around Echo Lakes, which is the longest hike she's ever done and I was so proud of her. She even went out and bought trekking poles afterwards too! I can totally imagine the pride you must feel watching your mom handle the trail like a boss! And Fancy is so freaking cute. Looking forward to watching you on the Camino!

I will start with the mountain bike on September 5th from Germany / Düsseldorf and will drive the Jacobsweg through France to Santiago. I expect to be in Spain in mid-October. I've been following your paths since your AT Thue hike. I am very pleased that you will now get to know our beautiful Europe. You will love the old nice cities and beautiful churches. Perhaps we see us on the camino. That would be great.
I wouldn't worry about the break in the series. It's just fun getting out with you into the wild. Love the flowers, the stream crossing, just the site of a tent being put up relaxes me. We'll catch up when you get your footage back.

I just wanted to leave a note to say thank you for all of your videos and efforts! As someone who was an avid hiker and camper, but has now become ill and had the ability and freedom to do it taken from me, I absolutely love watching your videos and seeing everything! I had always wanted to do a thru hike on the AT, as my home hiking area is up in the NH mountains and I have hiked and camped on many spots along that stretch, but now I’ve found myself physically and medically unable to continue doing it and am no longer able to work to cross that off my bucket list; it’s really wonderful to be able to watch you and you help scratch that itch I still have to see life out on the trail and I appreciate it so much! Please never ever take your ability to do these things for granted and take in every moment you’re out on the trail! Life is short and unpredictable and you never know if one hike might be the last time you will be able to get out there! Keep enjoying your adventures and thank you again for all of your hard work sharing them with us!!

My mom wants to do it with me, but I don't think either of us is ready yet, but we plan to do smaller hikes and walks to get there. I just hope we get ready before her age catches up with her and she can't handle it.

Hi, I'm spanish and I've been subscribed to your channel for a long time. You'll love the Camino de Santiago. If you have any doubt about Spain and traditions, just ask! Also, while you are here, also consider the GR-11 which is 800km crossing the Pririneos and will take you 2 months or so of pure incredible mountains.
I just did the mountain bike version of the GR11. The Pyrenees are absolutely amazing would recommend them to anyone. The Spanish people are very friendly and the mountains are so peaceful and beautiful.
Fancy reminds me of my dog haley. So full of energy. On a different note, while in the army, we always dummy tied things easily forgotten when you pick up and move. Love your videos.
Any plans on going back to the San Juans, to the section you had to bypass last year due to the fires? I've done some camping/fishing in that area, and it is pretty neat. I haven't been back out West for a few years; I'm about to talk myself into going out there for a few days this year before the snows hit. Love your videos.
When I was undergoing Officer training for the Army, we pretty much all had blisters. A friend's mother, who was a Nurse saw me limping on a weekend about 5 weeks in and put me onto this, which I absolutely swear by. In the UK the brand is called Compeed, and the product is 'second skin'. The reason blisters hurt so much is because air gets to the unformed skin underneath, and also it is ultra sensitive. Removing (carefully) the dead top layer, the second skin sticks directly over the top. No real need for anything else. it sticks to the skin, has a gel cushion, and you leave it on, I have had them on for up to a week. By the time they come off, the skin underneath is peachy. Easy to apply, instant relief and you can carry on pretty much instantly. For blister prevention, I've heard people swear by wearing two pairs of socks. The first pair are typically 'silk' socks, very thin, and the outer pair are your normal woollen hiking socks.
Dixie, consider this phone: Kyocera Duraforce Pro 2. It has a sapphire screen that just will not break. It is not Gorilla Glass, it is watch crystal grade sapphire and it will not break. There are videos on TH-cam of it being thrown out of car windows, over the shoulder of bike riders, and attempts to scratch it with knives and stones. I got mine when I was a camp nurse and you can take underwater video (like in the hot tub on the nurse cruise -- fun!). It will even make a call or send text from underwater, though I have no idea why you would. The video quality is probably not as good as the iPhone, but it is HD and certainly presentable. It has ridden around in a pocket with keys for four years, been dropped many times and, while the case is worn, the glass does not have the first scratch. It does not need a case like the Otterbox, it's fine on its own. It is not the sexiest phone, or the most well known, but I think it is more rugged than the iPhone for a third of the price. Thank you for the inspiration. I am 63 and am leaving for a short (23 miles) hike on the Pine Mountain trail in Georgia the week after next to check out gear and to break things in. I have not been backpacking in 20 years. Your work had a lot to do with my decision to get going. All my best to you.

Was happy to see familiar territory with you so close to my home (I'm in central Washington). Was laughing out loud at Fancy's snow zoomies and eagerly awaiting your (hopefully) recovered footage. We just got back from a trip to Modoc National Forest, Deschutes (where did some of the PCT and other trails up there), and Shasta with our dog. We only did a day hike in Shasta-Trinity, but we were backpacking the rest of the time. It's been three days now and our dog seems so depressed. She was full of life on the trail (and the ocean) and now she's just so sad. I can't wait for her to do the zoomies again. The only time she perks up is when it's time for a walk and even then she wants to get in the car.
This has been so enjoyable to watch, thank you for sharing the journey with us. I hope you can recover the footage, but if not, you’re only human and we’ve all been there a time or two, or three. I would have made the same assumption, so I actually did learn something from your experience.Loved seeing Fancy so happy, and a debrief with your Mom would be great! Happy trails! 🐾💟
Dooooog!!! My puppers act the same way in the snow. It's kinda neat your mom and dog were able to join you for a section. If I lived closer, I'd definitely take my dog for day trips. It's always so sad leaving her behind. How often do you think about your dog when she's not with you?

Some of us are frankly closer to her age than yours so seeing her out there is just awesome :-) Also- I'd love a little recap on what you see in the changes to Fancy's confidence as a result of this trip. You made it clear that was the big reason for taking her and it would be great to see if you feel it was a success. From what we see in the videos- she seems like a totally new dog now with a huge personality!

Seems like she's coming into her own, more confident, and she's also brought a lot of joy to you and your mom on the hike. Unexpected bonus of bringing a dog!! I'm obsessed with trying to eat well and NOT eat tuna and tortillas EVER, if I can avoid it!
As my friend Dee used to say (about the dogs), "I used to think that I was wearing them out taking them on hikes. Now, I know I was just building up their endurance/energy level". Fancy is going to have some big expectations in the future.

I've one question tho, with all your hiking trails (obviously you're hooked), have you given up on your Engineering career? Can't imagine how you've kept it with all these trips! Believe me tho, I do understand, after years of sitting at that drafting desk ( and then computer desk), that's what finally burned me out and drove me to the woods!! LOL Oh, and btw, when I did quit that, I was living just a few miles from where you're hiking there.

I know you are spot on. Fancy is the kind of dog that people try to find. Note how she looks at Dixie for the okay to cross streams or obstacles. She is a great dog. Sketchy dogs are spirited dogs and if they accept the boss like Fancy clearly does they are the best. I have a 90 pound Rott/Lab that is the same way and 5 years old and loves your videos and when Fancy is on she gets so excited I have to pause from time to time.
I thought maybe you could just dip the phone in alcohol to dry it out or a hair dryer(?). I had an old flip phone that went through a hospital washing machine at those very high temps and when it dried out it still worked. I think it also went throu their dryer with the sheets it was washed with.
Fancy seems to be getting so much more comfortable on the trail!! Watching this series makes me want to take my mom and pup out sooo badly. Happy hiking to you, your mom, and of course miss fancy!
Hey don't expect too much of the 'Camino'. I found the nicest part was the Pyrenees crossing, I did that several times. There is a lot of roadside hiking in the middle but if you have time to stay in the cities and explore it can be quite interesting with some touches of very old Europe.
Looks like you got yourself a snow dog there! You'll have to relocate to the midwest snowbelt with us. We'll make a Northwestern Wildcat fan of you yet. LOL. I always assumed you used a gopro for your underwater footage. I don't think I could get up the courage to stick my phone underwater. Looking forward to watching your overseas adventure. I don't think any of us would've known the better on your missing footage. We all just look forward to whatever you putout. Good luck in your travels!

This has been so inspiring! I am turning a nice round number-birthday this year and my 14 year old daughter has declared that she would like to thru-hike the AT to finish out her high school career. Fancy cracked me up!! Although I realize you’re a bit frustrated, it’s a bit comforting to see even Dixie still makes hiking mistakes, but you always roll with it, & keep on hiking on!
Someone has probably already mentioned it but this winter when there is some snow on the ground in Georgia or Tennessee or wherever it may snow the closest to your home in Alabama, sounds like Fancy would love a road trip to play in fresh fallen snow. The deeper the better with a nice hillside.

I love that Ruffwear dog backpack... I have the same one for my K9 packing buddy. I especially love the fact that the harness is super secure on the dog and the handle is balanced to turn the dog into a dog shaped suit case to help the dog on ascents and descents through rocky steep terrain...
Such a joy watching Fancy! You might want to make a habit of putting things down, such as your poles, on the direction of travel side of you when you stop so they are in front of you and visible when you leave. Also I was wondering why you don't wear gaiters. I'm an old guy with bad knees so I'm doing all my thru hikes vicariously through you. Thanks so much for all of your efforts sharing these hikes with us.

The technical term for your dog’s actions is the “zoomies”.
We used to call it "having a mad moment" when we had a dog
We call it Low Butting in order to make the tight turns.
We called it "running the bases." Fancy is an expert at it!
Our Boston used to have the zoomies. She’s gotten too old now. We miss the zoomies
I love how everyone has a different term for this. We call it doing a "pig-boy". I have no idea how we arrived at that term.

Removing (carefully) the dead top layer, the second skin sticks directly over the top. No real need for anything else. it sticks to the skin, has a gel cushion, and you leave it on, I have had them on for up to a week. By the time they come off, the skin underneath is peachy. Easy to apply, instant relief and you can carry on pretty much instantly.
For blister prevention, I've heard people swear by wearing two pairs of socks. The first pair are typically 'silk' socks, very thin, and the outer pair are your normal woollen hiking socks.

Dixie, consider this phone: Kyocera Duraforce Pro 2. It has a sapphire screen that just will not break. It is not Gorilla Glass, it is watch crystal grade sapphire and it will not break. There are videos on TH-cam of it being thrown out of car windows, over the shoulder of bike riders, and attempts to scratch it with knives and stones. I got mine when I was a camp nurse and you can take underwater video (like in the hot tub on the nurse cruise -- fun!). It will even make a call or send text from underwater, though I have no idea why you would. The video quality is probably not as good as the iPhone, but it is HD and certainly presentable. It has ridden around in a pocket with keys for four years, been dropped many times and, while the case is worn, the glass does not have the first scratch. It does not need a case like the Otterbox, it's fine on its own. It is not the sexiest phone, or the most well known, but I think it is more rugged than the iPhone for a third of the price.

Was happy to see familiar territory with you so close to my home (I'm in central Washington). Was laughing out loud at Fancy's snow zoomies and eagerly awaiting your (hopefully) recovered footage. We just got back from a trip to Modoc National Forest, Deschutes (where did some of the PCT and other trails up there), and Shasta with our dog. We only did a day hike in Shasta-Trinity, but we were backpacking the rest of the time. It's been three days now and our dog seems so depressed. She was full of life on the trail (and the ocean) and now she's just so sad. I can't wait for her to do the zoomies again. The only time she perks up is when it's time for a walk and even then she wants to get in the car.
This has been so enjoyable to watch, thank you for sharing the journey with us. I hope you can recover the footage, but if not, you’re only human and we’ve all been there a time or two, or three. I would have made the same assumption, so I actually did learn something from your experience.Loved seeing Fancy so happy, and a debrief with your Mom would be great! Happy trails! 🐾💟
Dooooog!!! My puppers act the same way in the snow. It's kinda neat your mom and dog were able to join you for a section. If I lived closer, I'd definitely take my dog for day trips. It's always so sad leaving her behind. How often do you think about your dog when she's not with you?

I have really enjoyed this particular journey with your Mom and Fancy. I second the calls for a trail name for your Mom and a post hike interview with her. Some of us are frankly closer to her age than yours so seeing her out there is just awesome :-) Also- I'd love a little recap on what you see in the changes to Fancy's confidence as a result of this trip. You made it clear that was the big reason for taking her and it would be great to see if you feel it was a success. From what we see in the videos- she seems like a totally new dog now with a huge personality!

Seems like she's coming into her own, more confident, and she's also brought a lot of joy to you and your mom on the hike. Unexpected bonus of bringing a dog!! As my friend Dee used to say (about the dogs), "I used to think that I was wearing them out taking them on hikes. Now, I know I was just building up their endurance/energy level". Fancy is going to have some big expectations in the future.

I know you are spot on. Fancy is the kind of dog that people try to find. Note how she looks at Dixie for the okay to cross streams or obstacles. She is a great dog. Sketchy dogs are spirited dogs and if they accept the boss like Fancy clearly does they are the best. I have a 90 pound Rott/Lab that is the same way and 5 years old and loves your videos and when Fancy is on she gets so excited I have to pause from time to time.

I thought maybe you could just dip the phone in alcohol to dry it out or a hair dryer(?). I had an old flip phone that went through a hospital washing machine at those very high temps and when it dried out it still worked. I think it also went throu their dryer with the sheets it was washed with.
Fancy seems to be getting so much more comfortable on the trail!! Watching this series makes me want to take my mom and pup out sooo badly. Happy hiking to you, your mom, and of course miss fancy!

Hey don't expect too much of the 'Camino'. I found the nicest part was the Pyrenees crossing, I did that several times. There is a lot of roadside hiking in the middle but if you have time to stay in the cities and explore it can be quite interesting with some touches of very old Europe.

This has been so inspiring! I am turning a nice round number-birthday this year and my 14 year old daughter has declared that she would like to thru-hike the AT to finish out her high school career. I'd love to do a section with her. I am so proud of your mom for braving the wild and going along with you. Also we love taking our dog hiking with us, so I am already a Fancy fan. Someone has probably already mentioned it but this winter when there is some snow on the ground in Georgia or Tennessee or wherever it may snow the closest to your home in Alabama, sounds like Fancy would love a road trip to play in fresh fallen snow. The deeper the better with a nice hillside.

I love that Ruffwear dog backpack... I have the same one for my K9 packing buddy. I especially love the fact that the harness is super secure on the dog and the handle is balanced to turn the dog into a dog shaped suit case to help the dog on ascents and descents through rocky steep terrain...
Such a joy watching Fancy! You might want to make a habit of putting things down, such as your poles, on the direction of travel side of you when you stop so they are in front of you and visible when you leave. Also I was wondering why you don't wear gaiters. I'm an old guy with bad knees so I'm doing all my thru hikes vicariously through you.
