I have always liked Jean Louisa Kelley's rendition of this song. I remember the first time I watched this on "Mr. Holland's Opus", I was absolutely spellbound.
Jean Louise Kelly's rendition of this song is one of the most passionate things I have ever seen. More than just great singing....her facial expressions tear your heart out as you imagine the torture that Mr. Holland was going through. Suddenly your once in a lifetime soulmate is beckoning to you....what will you do? Incredible song and movie!
So much more to a performance than voice. Kelly sings AND acts this performance. As true art it won't speak to everyone. I feel her performance is simply unforgettable. A thoroughly perfect combination of form, sound, honesty and expression in every possible way to communicate the emotion of the moment. Thank you Ms. Kelly for an outstanding performance, I believe the Gershwin boys would agree that you have earned this song as your own.
Just watched Jean Louisa Kelly sing Someone To Watch Over Me for perhaps the 50th time. My reaction has never varied. I just fall in love with this beautiful girl and the way she looks at Dreyfus. I regret that we cannot see more of her. One of the most memorable scenes in any motion picture.
When I saw Mr. Hollands Opus some years ago, this song came up an I remember thinking what a great version of this old Gershwin standard ! Forgot about it until now. Searching through all the people who sing it, this remains the best.
Beyond riveting, this perfect rendition of a Gershwin classic is emotionally flawless and goes directly through my soul and out my heart! A perfect "10!"
Great smile, looks, great voice, talented acting---what else could you ask for in an actress? One of my all-time favorite movies. What great characters and what great lessons this movie offers.
This film is so lovely and romantic. The song is wonderful and very tender. The voice of the Jean Louisa Kelly is magnificent. I enjoyed this performance. Thanks a lot for sharing this one.
What a marvelous voice, singing an unforgettable song! I wish she would sing more, although her acting talent is great. I don't think I've heard anyone singing this Gershwin song with more feeling.
I was going to write the same comment! I have bought Mr Holland's Opus on DVD and can't get enough of this song or the movie. Also brings a tear when John Lennon dies!!
I come back to this song over and over. I haven't heard any other vocalist out there even come close to nailing it like her. Only wish this version didn't start over at 1:19 dang it. LOL!
That scene and Kelly's voice is amazing. Compelled me to read up on her. She was 23 when she did this. Many a singer in high school have amazing voices and for one reason or another don't make it big. I had such a friend who possessed an amazing voice at 15 and she also sang in the annual drama production - just leaving the audience with dropped jaws. 7 years later Joanna sang at my wedding and had the same effect on my guests.
My first introduction to this song was seeing her sign this song: "Someone to Watch Over Me" in the Movie: "Mr Holland's Opus"... Thanks for sharing this video...
Jean Louisa Kelly owns this song. Saw the post from the Letterman show and hoped someone would post from the movie. There goes the old fart's heart again lol Thank you Celsobe Good work
She is brilliant, in Holland, in Buck, an outstanding voice, and an amazing talent. I guess she didn't GET BIG because she had taste, discretion, talent, and a life (I presume). Good for her.
I'm probably in love with Jean Louisa. Just watched Uncle Buck again.. And she's still so beautiful. I always had a crush on her while she was doing Yes, Dear...
Certainly a wonderful theme and no doubt about it splendid acting and yes, Jean Louisa Kelly has the voice of an angel. Thank you CineMax for making it possible for me to see this extremely well done movie!! This is a marvelous inspiration for teachers everywhere!! Yes, you do make a difference!!!
i remembered watching this movie exactly at the same time when i think of a girl i'd just met on street that i cant forget 'bout her and when i thought of her, this song, this voice came along, gave me such a beautifully sad feeling i think maybe i'll never see her again
She certainly sang it so wonderful.. had that Broadway magic to it. Great movie,,, seen it multiple times... makes me want to sing. Its a shame they cut art and music out of schools... the evil do-ers behind the scenes dont want those programs ... they want a society incapable of artistic and critical thinking.. which is what art/music helps us develop.
I just listened to Linda Ronstadt's version of this song and she is good, but nobody performs it better than Jean Louisa. Do yourself a favor and rent Mr. Hollands Opus. Great movie, fabulous acting and a wondeful message.
Yes she did have a crush on him, but Mr Holland had one on her two. She was his muse. But in the end I think Rowena really helped Glen in appreciating the family and life he already had.
Ms. Kelly is a fine actress, but I think she should spend much more time singing, as she has such a beautiful voice. This recording is so special, better than any other I've ever heard. Sweet girl!
Oh yeah, I'm old enough (see my username). :) I believe the year Mr. Holland's Opus came out in theatres, I was a high school sophomore, so maybe 9 as well when Uncle Buck came out. I did not actually see MHO until it was on television in the early 2000s. Since then, I've loved this song (and other Gershwin pieces) and have wanted this version. The only one I was able to really get was by Sarah Vaughan.
Ótimo filme. Usei-o em muitas aulas para mostrar alguns exemplos para outros professores. Great movie. I used it in a lot of classes for to show some examples for other teachers. Vanderley-Brazil.
Miss Kelly was born in 1972 in Worcester, Massachusetts, married 1997 lucky Mr. James Pitaro. They got two children till yet. However, everyone on earth knows this beautiful song was written by G+I (Gershwin) it was the basic of the dicisive scene of "Mr. Holland's Opus" (1995). May be we see Mr.Holland - who is a composer in the movie - as a conducter. This part is brilliantly played by Richard Dreyfus who only can express his feelings for her with his face doing his work in front of his musicians.
That lady in the crowd, with the curly hair and spectacles was Ms. Rowena Morgan herself!! She is ofcourse, much older here and it was she who knew that Mr. Holland was writing his Opus! And it was she who wanted to give back something to Mr. Holland for his sincerity and guidance. Obviously, she realized by then, that he did the right thing in not following her to NY.
la verdad esta pelicula se me hace de lo mas linda para mi ya esta en mi coleccion de peliculas favoritas y bueno para mi es un clasico y sigo reconociendo que buen cine independiente se hace en estados unidos guao mis respetos
I have always liked Jean Louisa Kelley's rendition of this song. I remember the first time I watched this on "Mr. Holland's Opus", I was absolutely spellbound.
Really beautiful
Same!
And the agony of his wife realizing that Rowena wasn't just a fairy tale. 😢
I fell in love with this girl when she sang this song. Nobody sings it like Jean Louisa.
One of my all time favorites.
Just watched Uncle Buck 😊👍 and then it just hit me!! What a talent, Jean Louisa! 💕
I remember watching this in school for a few days in Music class.. I still cry every time I watch it. 3
It was on TV this afternoon...and yes it made us all cry ....
When I saw Mr. Hollands Opus some years ago, this song came up an I remember thinking what a great version of this old Gershwin standard ! Forgot about it until now. Searching through all the people who sing it, this remains the best.
This film is a heart breaker ----& a masterpiece. easily, Rich Dreyfuss finest work onscreen, EVER. ----------------------WolfSky9
Yes this was a Film for all ages , to embrace & enjoy for a Life Time...Thank you Richard Dreyfuss , YOU have that Midas touch
I agree with you. His performance was undrated as was the movie. A terrific actor.
This may be the best version/rendition of 'Someone to Watchover Me'. She did it with the right emotion so that you believe it.
The very best
I love her version of this timeless Gershwin classic.
Beyond riveting, this perfect rendition of a Gershwin classic is emotionally flawless and goes directly through my soul and out my heart! A perfect "10!"
Noone can sing this as well as she can..
Chills every time at how perfect she sounds.
Yaz Wright Amen to that.
Two of my favorite movies! Mr. Holland‘s Opus and Uncle Buck!
Great smile, looks, great voice, talented acting---what else could you ask for in an actress? One of my all-time favorite movies. What great characters and what great lessons this movie offers.
Very well said Mike Parker !
This is one of the best versions I've heard of this song Simply Beautiful.
A classic Irish beauty, I was absolutely taken with her, in the movie. -------------WolfSky9, 73 y/o
Sim, apaixonante.
This film is so lovely and romantic.
The song is wonderful and very tender.
The voice of the Jean Louisa Kelly is magnificent.
I enjoyed this performance.
Thanks a lot for sharing this one.
I have seen Mr. Holland's Opus 6 times and love it each time! Such emotional conflict yet a lovely delicate movie!
She has a beautiful vibrato in her voice. Lovely!
She was also in early minute maid juice and Marek commercials ...... True
was on Tv this afternoon. forgot how great this movie was. Richard Dreyfuss was amazing.
I love to hear a beautiful voice that doesn't do a lot of "screaming". Just like this!
this is most likely the best verison of this song,, so much passion, so much control, so intense,,,, I love it...
I first watched this movie in 1996 and it gave me strength to carry on. Mr. Holland's life is an inspiration to every beginner teacher like me.
The way she sings and looks to Mr. Holland is like a shot to the heart
What a marvelous voice, singing an unforgettable song! I wish she would sing more, although her acting talent is great. I don't think I've heard anyone singing this Gershwin song with more feeling.
I absolutely LOVE the way she sang this song with so much feeling. I fell in love with the movie because of this song.
One of my favorite movies. I fell in love with Jean Louisa while watching this movie.
I've listened to a lot of versions of this song and my favourite would always be Jean Louisa Kelly's rendition :-)

We watched this movie in my ASL class, and the music (mostly this song) was absolutley captivating.
She is much much better, than anyone who ever attempted this song, & with beauty & grace , & STAGE PRESENCE to the max....truely gorgeous!!
this is my favorite rendition of this song ... so beautiful :D
That scene and Kelly's voice is amazing. Compelled me to read up on her. She was 23 when she did this. Does she try to sing for a living? Sounds as though she should.
not really, she went into TV but she now has her own You Tube channel Jean Louisa Kelly - Topic
Totally agree. A great movie only to be better because of this beautiful rendition of a timeless song.
She handles this song better than anyone else has ever done. I cry every time I hear it.
Gorgeous! She was the first person I ever heard sing this song and she is my favorite!
Such a great movie and singer!!
Just saw and watched again...simply fabulous!
absolutely lovely performance!
J'adore c'est magique, un talent béni des Dieux, merci de nous en faire profiter René Willener Genève Swizerland

Beautiful voice....beautiful girl. One of those I fell in love with in my youth.
Such a romantic song sung with passion.
A great song performance in one of the best movies ever!
I am surprised that Jean didn't become a still bigger star.
Martin Mitchell maybe she refused Harvey’s casting couch.
I really love her version. So beautiful.
She is brilliant, in Holland, in Buck, an outstanding voice, and an amazing talent. I guess she didn't GET BIG because she had taste, discretion, talent, and a life (I presume). Good for her.
Exactly. She's too classy for all the celebrity shenanigans. She's a true artist who just wants to be entertaining and also have a life.
I'm probably in love with Jean Louisa.
Just watched Uncle Buck again..
And she's still so beautiful.
I always had a crush on her while she was doing Yes, Dear...

The most beautiful love song I have ever heard
She has such a beatiful voice. She needs to sing Gershwin and put it on an album
This girl stole my heart in " Mr Holland's Opus". Ohhhh my, she was luminous. ---------------WolfSky9, 71 y/o

Does she play on the sitcom "Yes Dear" ? A strong resemblence to the actress
Yes she did
Great movie! I wish Jean Louisa Kelly can watch over me!

Que hermoso film. Un canto a la vida. A sacar de adentro lo mejor de cada uno. Me pareció muy buena y fresca la interpretación del tema. Ryan
Yes she did have a crush on him, but Mr Holland had one on her two. She was his muse. But in the end I think Rowena really helped Glen in appreciating the family and life he already had.

Cuanta pasión en su voz y su mirada!

Una de las mejores maneras de hermanar una historia con una canción. Hermoso. Ryan
What a beautiful voice !

Yeah, i love this version because it includes the incredibly we written, (and often neglected) introduction.
Jean was in an old movie called "Uncle Buck" with John Candy..
Never liked her as an actress in any other show.. yet, Mr. Hollands Opus was a very good movie with her..
Great Gershwin! Great Jean!

George Gershwin
