      Leading with 7-stroke rolls is great at a tempo of 108 bpm, but try that with a tempo of 130 bpm and you'll buzz it every time. 5-stroke rolls in duple pulsation is the alternative. I love hearing the 7-stroke in ancient fashion, as well as a 15-stroke roll (13-stroke at 130 bpm).

    Most drum corps stopped using fallams years to a decade ago and most marching groups nolonger even use kevlar based heads. They are mostly aramid fiber heads that are a lot softer ( closer to a mylar feel ) and even have mylar mixed in with the aramid fibers. Technology....

      It's called, practice, and more practice. When I was drumming back in the 50s, through the 60s, I would practice anywhere from 3 hours up to 6 hours per day, on basics. Learning to play each rudiment correctly. I would start by playing the rudiment slow, and then increase speed gradually, if I found I wasn't executing the Ruderman correctly, I would slow down until I could execute the proper way, and then start to increase my speed. Then I would start to decrease my speed, very slowly. In my opinion, DCI and DCA, should start insisting that drum and bugle corpse, start playing real rudiments, instead of all the juggling head-bobbing, and dancing and prancing on the field. They turned what was one of the greatest activities in the United states, and Canada, into a marching band competition, superimposed on a three ring circus. Former member of the Floyd Bennett golden eagles, from Brooklyn New York, former member of the Long Island sunrises. Today is June 23rd 2022. Long Live real drummers playing real rudiments. By the way my first drama instructor was a Cadet from West Point, when I was in military school, Mount Saint Joseph Military Academy, just outside of West Point. That was around 1953 I believe?

    Many of the comments, people have no idea how to execute a standard seven-stroke roll. Learn to play, Army 24, and army 68 standard, drum solos. Also Connecticut halftime, downfall of Paris, Grandfather's Clock. These are all standard, American drum solos. I learned always standards when I was a member of the olph ridge men, drum and bugle Corps, from Brooklyn New York, in 1956. My drum instructor was Eddie Fitzgerald, may he rest in peace. He was not only a great instructor he also was a, drum judge, Easton judges Association, and several others don't recall. Years ago we would get credit, under the caption of, exposure to error. The more rudiments and difficulty of these rudiments including Swiss rudiments, you would get credit. Today is drum lines get credit for, juggling, rimshot at the rimshot after rimshot, head bobbing, arms flowing all over the place, movements body English to make them look cool so they think, and I believe they play less than four or five rudiments in their entire program. Today it's more about visuals, kind of like a circus. You no longer have real drum and bugle c o RPS. May they all rest in peace. In my opinion DCI has turned the activity, into a marching band competition, superimposed on a three-ring circus. Today's date September 27th 2022. Former member of the Floyd Bennett golden eagles from Brooklyn New York, and the Long Island sunrises.

    • @drewpyperc
      @drewpyperc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      David Clarkson It’s a common interpretation in traditional fife and drum playing. Basically the seven and fifteen stroke rolls are played out and tend to fall behind the beat just a touch, and then the tempo kicks right back in. Look up some fife and drum groups on TH-cam and you’ll notice the trend. Different groups have a different feel sometimes, too. You can look for groups like the Middlesex County Volunteers, the Connecticut Blues, the Connecticut Patriots, the Regulators, and of course The Old Guard. These, among many others in the northeast, are all great groups with outstanding drummers.

    I think it would be cool if a DCI drum line wouldn't worry about trying to get high drums one year and instead just brought in about 15 snares and had a whole show with low tuned mylar. Phantom would be perfect. They could break out some of that 89/90 down the line visual. They always had that Scottish slur style. 1987 comes to mind with that snare break that John Wooton wrote.

    Hi.
    Can I ask someone from these corps a technical question about this video.
    Like many other drummers, I'm a little familiar with Crazy Army from Steve Gadd's performance and I've seen it transcribed. I've watched this performance many times and can't work out what's happening with the 7 stroke rolls. Are they slowed down, and then the time caught up in the next beat, or are they not what I consider traditional triplet based 7 stroke rolls and the beat actually drops back slightly. (Maybe played as rolled 16th notes so the beat drops back by a 16th note each time?)
    Is there anyway I can get hold of a copy of the sheet music for this version?
    Whatever the answer it's an amazing performance.
    Many thanks
    Andy

      From what I understand, 7-stroke rolls are traditionally "dragged", or slowed down. Somewhere, I saw a video from a Civil War reenactor drummer who explained that 7-stroke rolls were kind of played slower and looser than 5 or 9 stroke, and the strict in-time beat was picked up again just afterwords.

    • @LukeSoro_MM
      @LukeSoro_MM 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Haha you're definitely a modern drummer. Every non-drum corps drummer CANNOT read a 7 stroke roll. A 7 starts on the 'and' and ends on the 'beat'. We slurp it in. Different styles sound different. The Swiss tend to do a 'stagger' where it's super fast. As a New England snare drummer, I do a medium, so not this dragged and not super fast/concise. As for the sheet music, this is the traditional piece, so just browse the internet. If not, I can probably message you a photo copy of mine from my corps handbook. Thanks.

      hey there andy, i also saw the diffrence immidietly between the 7 stroke role here and in Gadd's variation. what happened is, Steve Gadd is playing the role like sextuplets with double strokes, and they are playing the role the old-fashioned, like you would play a 5 stroke role but with 2 additional strokes, witch causes a delay. both are right. i personaly prefer Gadd's variation. hope i helped!

      CIA it’s an old interpretation of what a seven stroke roll should be, the fact that they are all doing it correctly should give that away that it is clearly intentional. Traditionally rather than abiding by tempo and using a triple feel to compensate 7 strokes were played with a duple feel and tempo was simply kicked in after the roll, that’s not a good or bad thing that’s merely an old versus new technique, imo I’d almost say it is more correct given this would be how it was interpreted when it was originally written
