    Never liked the idea of a tube fed magazine. But have always appreciated the Henry heritage and their devotion to American made and the 2nd Amndmnt. Hence I at least bought a .22LR Golden Boy in support of the company.

    I also want to say much thanks to Henry for keeping the lever action alive and especially the fine and venerable .30WCF chambering.

    bought my new Haven 94 winchester in 1971 for 99.95 with 2 boxes of winchester ammo included. it came in the mail. I had to sign a letter saying I was 16 years of age. are we really better off today?
    makes me want to cry.

    Arcamedies said give me a lever long enough and he shall move the earth.

    I had a Winchester 30-30 with of course the side loading gate, which I found to be a PITA to reload.
    I like the Henry much better without the loading gate and its smoother action.
    Thanks sootch!

    I really am thoroughly pleased with my Henry .30-30. I got one of the very first ones to be built at the new Rice Lake, Wisconsin plant. It cycles like a champ, had zero blemishes right out of the box. And the really neat thing, is that many firearm manufacturers have some quality control issues from their newest factories....until they iron the initial production kinks out. But the gun I received looks like it was made by seasoned craftsmen who've been making quality rifles all their life. Most of the employees there in Rice Lake knew absolutely nothing about making guns before they came to work for Henry.

    This Henry Rifle in .30-30 seems like an excellent choice for big game hunting or even home defense. One thought though, the screws for a scope seem to be pointless. The .30-30 with iron peep sights will be accurate enough for good shot groups at 100 meters and even out to maximum of 150 meters. The .30-30 rifle was designed as a BRUSH GUN. The heavy 150 grain and 170 grain .30 caliber bullet is designed to punch through brush without deflecting away from line of sight. Most shots in the brush at big game are typically at a range of about 30 to 50 meters. The scope at these close ranges serves no purpose but might actually make the rifle more difficult to handle in the brush. The ease of carry, quick deployment in brush, and the heavy punching power through the brush is what has made the .30-30 lever action so popular over the last century. If you want to put a scope on a .30-30 go get a .270 or .30-06 bolt action rifle instead where the optics will be properly utilized. A scope is a waste of money on a brush gun like a .30-30 rifle.

    Great job on the review. This H009 is my 4th Henry, and none has ever disappointed. Having previously owned an older Marlin 336, that was a remarkable shooter by the way, I was wondering if this would hold up to it. It does, and then some. Sure it's hard to look past the traditional side-gate loading but it is only a means to an end and the tube feed I feel does not slow me down at all. It's also easier on the thumbs. I added a sub-$200 Nikon Pro-Staff 3-9x40 to increase range, but usually gravitate back to iron sights- preference. In short- getcha one. Excellent service by Henry seals it.

  • @nlesiak3
    @nlesiak3 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @8:55 during the close up you can see a pin on the lever near the front of the trigger. this is a small lock that snaps closed but you can drift out out the pin, clip off 1 coil or so, pop it back in, and this will lesson the "break" in the beginning of your racking cycle where you have no momentum, it will really smooth things out. I've done it on all of my henrys and marlins.

    Great review as usual. I just bought one of these for a really good deal, one which I couldn't pass up considering the prices up here in Canada. 30/30 is one of my favourite calibers especially shooting cast boolits. This newest acquisition of mine makes three now, so now my 20" '94 carbine and Trapper have a gun safe mate ;)The only thing negative that I've read with these is the lever tends to drop when loaded but I'm sure if I hold it closed when walking in the bush it shouldn't be a problem. After purchasing a 22 rimfire Golden Boy 2yrs ago I had to get another Henry. Thanks again for your detailed review. Cheers eh!

    • @sexytopramen
      @sexytopramen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have more tacti-cool guns than you could shake a stick at, but i still can't bring myself to use them over a lever gun in the new England woods. I've used an early 70s model 94 the past few seasons, and just last week bought a new henry 30-30 octagon barrel in brass. It just feels right while walking through the Maine woods to tote along a lever gun with iron sights.

    I agree with Sootch. Love Henry rifles. Pulling out the tube to load is not so great . Got the Golden boy in 22LR. I'll get a Big Boy in 44 Magnum. Great looking,smooth actions,and well made. Henry has lot of pride in quality control and customer service. Mr. Imperato really does a great job with his company and he has everything built in America. Because of his efforts and the history of Henry, I feel the need to buy their rifles. Every gun owner should own at least one Henry rifle ! I always like your videos Sootch.

  • @justo222
    @justo222 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    excellent vid sootch00 (as always, BTW) !! i've watched a lot of reviews on the henry rifles and yours is the 1st to really talk about the loading differences with it's pluses and minuses. i've wanted a henry for years, that is, until i found out it wasn't side loaded. i'm still not too crazy about having to pull out that retaining rod and having that lying around, possibly getting dinged/bent/etc... while i'm putting ammo down the tube (after all, accidents do happen). tho' i'm still not convinced that the tube load is better than the side load, if i ever decide that the tube load is not that big of a deal to me and do decide to get a henry, i'll be sure to tell them that your vid had a major part in my decision. thanks again, and keep up the excellent work/vids!

    Excellent review. I do like front tube loading and unloading. Most of the time (unless on shooting range) you will use 1 or 2 shoots max (sometimes none) and later you unload. I do not like to load same cartridges through the action multiple times. Each time you run cartridge through the action (and in to a barrel) the bullet get pushed back a little bit. Do this multiple times and you can have problem with overpressure. Very interesting rifle.

    Nice review on an obviously well made rifle by America's premier historical and legendary gun maker, B. Tyler Henry(or the recognized descendant). Really nice metal finish and stock work! I do love the Nelson King patent side loading gate, but as you say there are some nice safety advantages with the forend loading tube .

  • @webster7710
    @webster7710 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Just a nitpick, Sootch. The modern Henry Repeating Arms company is in no way related to or affiliated with Benjamin Tyler Henry. They are a new company, founded in the mid 1990s, and use the Henry name as more of an homage to the inventor of the lever gun.
    Other than that one little issue, the video was great, as usual for you. I really enjoy your reviews. Nice to see the Henry getting some love. I have one of the older models (smooth stock, buckhorn sights) and I love it. With a Leupold 1-4x scope it's my go-to deer rifle.

    That sling is so nice! I fell in love with it at first sight! Also if you mount a finer "peep" sight on this rifle, it will take the head off a partridge at close or long range. And with the Hornady ammo, it becomes a tackdriver.

      The original Henrys had a tube loading system. I guess it is a nod to that design and it distinguishes them from the Winchesters and Marlins.

      Yeah, maybe that's why. Still doesn't sit well with the some of us dreamers though I guess. The original henrys were also rimfire, top ejection, and solid brass receivers, but they seemed fine to do away with those on this model.

I have a post '65 Winchester '94 30-30, but like you point out, it creeps me out to 'unload' it.. especially indoors. I've had a slam fire happen with a pump action before.. pretty sketchy racking/ejecting high power rounds.

    Bought a brass Henry 30-30 previously loved but not fired, in the box. Loaded in 5 rounds, slid the magazine follower in and she jammed up tighter than a drum. Loading lever only made it worse. Love disassembling a rifle with a live round in it. Fellow offered to take it off my hands and I was glad to see it go. I since found out, never having a lever action before, I should have made sure the loading lever is held in the closed position while sliding the follower down. I wish I hadn't sold it. Bought one in 17HMR. It is truly all they say and more! I'll get another Henry in minute.
    If they ever ban all the firearms in Canada, they can have all of mine but not my Henry!

    I Love the quality of the Henry lever actions. I can't stand not having a loading gate on the side of a receiver though. If only Marlins were as good as they used to be. They have been improving, but the Henry quality is above Marlin's right now, sadly. I Love the old Marlins.

    I love this rifle! I did change the aperture to the smallest one X S offers for better accuracy.

    I agree that Marlin's quality has been sinking faster than a submarine with a screen door. I owned two Freedom Group Marlins, one wouldn't feed ammo properly even after a trip to the factory and the other had an issue with the barrel that couldn't be corrected. I would rather buy a new Henry and spend a few extra bucks doing it and get a good gun. I have an older Marlin now, and have had a few of them and the quality between the older Marlins and the new ones, well, enough said. As far as Winchesters, there is an old saying that the Winchester Model 94 is the gun you buy to collect and the Marlin is the gun you buy to shoot, but since Winchester now comes with a plate of sushi and Marlin has more issues than Readers Digest, well, Henry is the way to go.

      I also made the mistake of purchasing a Freedom Group Marlin. And I also had a problem with ammo feeding correctly. As the rounds were being fed into the chamber, the edge of the chamber would shave brass off of the case. The spent casings will not eject properly and the rear sight is canted. It was sent back to Marlin for me and I contacted one of the managers at Marlin and he tried to defend it, saying that there are going to be teething problems when you're just starting. They fixed the feeding problem, but that's all they fixed. Very disappointing.

      The marlins are starting to come back Quality wise . And I would want a Henry but the marlin is $375 and the Henry is $745 and I don’t want to hunt with a tube fed rifle plus I don’t have $750 this would be my first real rifle other than a 22 so I need some advice badly I am 14 years old

      Bayan1905 Henrys aren't perfect though. The loading system sucks, the "safety" on the hammer is a joke and not to mention they cost literally twice as much as a high end Marlin 336c. Also the accuracy is pathetic, you'll get tighter groups from a 12ga turkey gun.
      I'll admit, They have a smooth action and good looks but that's all they've got going for em'

      Weird Fatman21 Marlin is coming back but if you're thinking of getting one make sure it's not an older gun. I looked at two brand new Marlins a while ago, one was an older gun and the other just came from the factory. the new one was VERY nice and well made and had a silky smooth action, but the older one was a dud, it had a stiff action and crooked sights. They were both new guns but the older one was sitting there for some time.

      @@johnt4060 Tighter groups from a turkey gun.... Ok buddy! If they were that bad there would be no argument in the Marlin I mean shit buddy like you said they got the all so special side gate! there half the cost! customer sevice is impecable! why do these arguments even go on!....look dude I don't care what you like so why do you care so much what everybody else likes you need to focus on you and stop trying to get everyone on your boat... action's speak louder than word's and that's why Henry is king

    Maybe I'm being a little too picky, but the company is Henry REPEATING Arms, not Henry Arms.
    Henry makes some really nice lever guns. I have the .30-30. It's a beaut. For some reason, it shoots much more softly than my Marlin 336.

    Yea, really like the action on the Marlins and this one I'm sure is just as good if not better. But...just can't get over seeing the bolt and extractor on the side of the receiver, stick out like a sore thumb. Plus, them Winnies I tell you, love them oldies, they're lookers that's for sure and just as functional. And cheaper if you shop around for good used ones. Great video as always.

    Thank You for this and many other awesome reviews !! I am interested in a new henry lever action rifle. In terms of recoil, fun factor, and within 100yd effectiveness for whitetail deer, which would be your preference between the two ?

    I really enjoy rifles and even shotguns with peep sights. You can really reach out with peep sights, and close fast shots are very easy.

    With my handloads (Hodgdon Reverevolution powder and a Hornady 150 RN), it is pretty easy to get 1" accuracy all day at 110 yards using a 7 power scope. 30-30 does well for deer and hogs at close ranges. Fun to shoot and not much recoil at all.

    I did buy a marlin 336 in August of 2015 and I have to say it is a great gun the quality is great on mine also it shoots flawlessly and never had a problem with it the Henry is nicer but out of my price range
