I adore Ian's work. It's so understated, yet evocative. It evokes a personal sense of nostalgia, but simultaneously a sense of not-belonging for me.

@@atikzisan360 I uploaded one about a month ago. My next one is coming along and should be ready in a few weeks (I’m on holiday shortly so there’s a break in my schedule. And end of term is always a tricky time. So many commitments). But it won’t be too long.

my goodness, your choice of words and the way you convey sentences are sufficient enough to be used as teaching matertials in English lessons.
I think the power of photography to help us step outside ourselves, meet new people and experience new things is often forgotten with the talk of skills and gear. It really can change your life, if you give the chance.
As someone that also started with photography already flirting with my 30's, I appreciate this video.

Wow, wow, wow. The ambiguity that Ian talks about - e.g. both the sadness as well as the calm in his photos is such a beautiful metaphor to what life is like in general. It’s ultimately ambiguous. Not without purpose, but a clash of beauty and brokenness.
Thank you Sean for bringing him on, and thank you Ian for sharing all those incredibly valuable thoughts. I walk away extremely inspired (just jotted down a new project idea actually). And I just might have to pick up your book! =)
Ian Howorth and Joe Howard have been my favourite photographers for a number of years, it was great to hear Ian explain the mixed emotions that are present in his photography as it’s an element that I have always enjoyed without quite having words to describe it, now I have the words. Thank you to Shaun for this great video.
Nice one Sean, I'm ex-Cape Town, my family moved ro England which lasted only 6 months, then back to Cape Town, and I have been living in Cusco, Peru now for 15 years permanently, with extended visits before that. So I get where Ian is coming from.

@@phillipbanes5484 my brain just gets too worked up when there’s options. I can’t even bring 2 lenses with me to shoot or I’m just constantly thinking about what lens I should be using and if I’ll miss something for having the wrong lens at the wrong time

I was born in Australia to English parents and not only feel this pull constantly between countries (too English in my mannerisms and language for some Australians but not English enough to be truly English) I am thankful that I rediscovered photography. Photography has given me a community, an ever consuming passionate curious interesting the world. And it brought me to your channel.

It's interesting in the concept of feeling like an outsider, because in some ways, my portrait work is similar.
I'm not really a "people person" and am pretty introverted (but not necessarily shy), so hanging around or going out to meet people isn't something I do. So my friends were a bit surprised I became a portrait photographer.
My wife explained it best, I think: "It's just your way of connecting with people who are outside your normal friend group." I would have never thought of it that way unless she pointed it out.

In particular, this video, reaches inside my mind and pulls out to expose thoughts and feelings in a very familiar and yet eerily comfortable way. Wow, I didn't know that you grew up bouncing around Africa. I grew up the same, I lived in Botswana for many years of my childhood, and relate to what you are saying. I don't think it gave me an identity crisis, it gave me part of my identity that I am proud of and this influences my photographic work immensely. Taking photos allows me to imagine myself in a foreign place.
I'm going through a similar experience working on a book about where I live now. A very interesting video.

Das Bild mit der Lady mit dem Pelzmantel und dem konfrontierenden Blick ist wirklich großartig und um so beeindruckender, wenn dies keine gestellte Szene ist. Die Aufnahmen am Ende des Videos sind ebenso faszinierend und ich kann nicht mal erklären warum sie dies für mich sind da diese Art von Fotografie (normalerweise) nicht das Genre ist welches mich interessiert.

I love your work, man. I've been watching your portrait retouching series relentlessly and can't get over how detailed your teaching is. I was wondering one thing, though: How do you combine all of the elements from each video? Where do you start, and what do you finish up with?

I found the content interesting. I lived away from the UK from the age of 24 to 65. I have been back in the UK for 11 years and still feel like I am a visitor, not sure if I will ever feel at home.
I really enjoyed this. His work is fantastic. Specially with the story behind the images. Thats how it should be. I thought the phonebox was very very sad. The conversation that went down that line must have been hard listening.

Great vid Sean. He has certainly developed his own personal style. I'm wondering - how on earth does he afford the cost of medium format film? My goodness, here in Australia it costs an arm and a leg just for the 12 shots from the roll. I was happy to say goodbye to film 15 years ago, and like Steve McCurry, would never dream of going back to it - digital was so liberating. However, we each are different and perhaps he cannot get that look using digital!
Thanks my friend. I think he is also very economical and efficient with the shots he takes, but yes it's become so expensive.
@@phillipbanes5484 Thanks Phillip. Yes I agree. Steve McCurry said he used to have to lug a bag with 150 rolls of film in it, all over the world on his Nat Geo shoots. All the hassles at airports and X-ray, and not knowing if he nailed the shot till days later. It was the same for me and I gladly gave it up. for all my weddings now and gigs etc, I just love my two Z6ii's and their gorgeous lenses. I can shoot over 2K images at a gig, go home and apply presets and in a few hours be done. The hilarious thing is that all these newbies to film, end up having to get them digitally scanned (they usually don't print them), and upload them on social media - I don't get it. Why not just save money, shoot them on digital and be done with it.

I can't be bothered rewinding the video to find the answer for you, but you can identify a couple of rolls when he loads film in to the camera. Of course, that's only a few of many! 🙂
Can we have a retreat in the beautiful hills of N Yorkshire or streets of a UK city, for those of us who'd enjoy the separation but have kids/frandkids and no money to burn on foreign travel? :)

someone tell me how do street photographers make money. I know it's not about money but one has to survive. I recently turned 40 and in a weird place mentally to follow my passion of photography. Been doing it on/off but want to get into it more. However monetary aspect is keeping me from plunging into it. currently at a software job is paying the bills but I can't see myself doing it anymore. I was doing weddings but even that has dried up recently as more and more people are choosing flashy style which I don't do.
Must admit not any of his images inspired meat all. Maybe I’m missing something.
They don’t inspire meat they inspire veg!
I go out with my camera and take images that look good to me, all this philosophy is too deep for me.
You've already left two negative comments and this video wasn't even posted a day ago. I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve with the comments - it's fine if the content doesn't appeal to you, but clearly it appeals to numerous others. Just go watch something else? We're not short of options.

It is still ordinary postmodern photography. Stop exploring yourself and move on exploring the culture you live in.
