My male Maltese is 15+ now and still looks like a puppy. He sleeps 80% of the day but still likes his afternoon walks.
He is truly my companion and love. I know he is on borrowed time and I want to make each day a happy day for him and me.
Thinking about getting two next time. I would prefer one year or older Raising two puppies takes a lot of energy and time. I am retired and 77 years old.

If you love your Maltese as much as you say you do then it would be irresponsible to get another one of you are 77 as the dog could well outlive you and they are known for having separation anxiety so think what it would do to the dog if you were to die. A true dog lover would never want to put it's loved companion through that unless you had a close family member who could take he/she on after your demise.

We love our Maltese don’t we? You hopefully have many years ahead of you. Enjoy giving your love and time to another 1 (2) if that’s what you wish. I think the wording of the other comment was overly harsh. They don’t know you. Only YOU know what is good for YOU!

One day, it was really cold and my Maltese came in my room, jumped on my bed, and I thought she was being sweet, but it turned out she was shivering, (it was like 12 degrees) I could tell how cold she was, so I grabbed my blanket and wrapped it around her, she doesn’t usually let me wrap anything, but she accepted it and huddled closer to me. Since she was small, I put her inside my sweater, I told my sister to go get my dog’s jacket. But by the time she came with it, my Maltese had already fallen asleep inside my sweater. (My Maltese dog’s name is Sydney)

Growing up one of my friends had a Maltese, German Shepard, golden retriever and two one mutts. They always ran in a pack. If you called one dog they all came and they all thought they were lap dogs. Molly fit in with the bigger dogs with no problem (training is key) she was always a sweetheart and even babysat when the golden retriever “accidentally” had puppies. I think she was happy to finally have someone her own size for a bit.

I have a rescue maltese . Very bad idea and he is soo very dominant . I am an experienced dog owner and he tries me all the time . I dont think he bonded at all with any human . He was around 2 yrs when I got him. I called him Tobias but nick named Bubby for some reason. He can poop 3 or 4 xs a day which is a pain. He is a tyrant and doesnt listen for the most part. Im sure he has narcisisistic tendencies but I do love him . He is really cute but cuddly nope !!. He has come a long way but will never be a ''normal'' dog, poor guy!!! . I dread if anything happens to me like covid and I go in the hospital cuz he would not be consoled . he is a 1 person dog. Hes started biting 4 yrs ago too. I know how to train dogs but I cannot trust him at all he is unpredictable. I ve had him 4 10 yrs and I pray he has an easy gentle glide into death when he is ready , a natural death with out sickness. He is around 13yrs now, I will not get any pet after him he was such a handful. He does not know that and gets his needs met . He is pretty happy even though he is a very hard dog sometimes. --oh my vet says small white dogs can be very dominant.

I’ve had my Maltese for nine years now and his name is Max he is amazing the only thing she did not mention was this breed has a sort of coughing condition the older it gets so any strong smells like essential oils or nail polish remover if they’re in that environment for too long it can cause them to have trouble breathing and start to cough so I would be careful around that and they may need to go to the vet just to make sure that they’re OK but there are definitely medications that you can get your dog on in case they do have a cough attack my dog is very affectionate and very loving that we do not have a lot of time does it with him but we give them plenty enough OB/GYN and he’s getting older so he does not like playing as much but we do like to run around with him and give him treats

DO NOT get this dog if you're on a FIXED income!!! It WILL NEED trips to the groomer to get their hair cut, $50-$75 every 6-8 weeks...
You can't wait months and months!! The fur will mat and keep growing and mat some more, then you AND the dog will have lots of SERIOUS problems on top of other medical issues it's bound to have!!
If you don't want that yicky, slimy, dark discolored hair and discharge around the eyes, feed it TOP QUALITY food!! Ask your vet what's best... A groomer can only do so much!!... PEOPLE cause this problem, as it's from YOU giving them POOR quality food.
