What about putting bottles in the dishwasher? For the most part, we do NOT recommend putting reusable bottles or accessories in dishwashers. I've mentioned this in many other videos, so I suppose I was already in the "handwashing" mindset when writing and making this video and (somehow) neglected to mention dishwashers in a video about cleaning bottles.
These bottles can be expensive, so we think it's better to take a hands-on approach to make sure your bottle is cleaned sufficiently while minimizing the chances that it could get damaged or chipped from knocking into something else while your dishwasher is running. Also, you'll probably want to remove and hand-wash the seals anyways periodically because the dishwasher won't be able to get all around them. And it's not always clear which products are really dishwasher safe. For example, newer Hydro Flasks are dishwasher safe, but older ones are not. For the average user, it can be confusing or difficult to really know, so we generally like to play it safe and recommend handwashing.
But using a dishwasher makes cleaning easier and more convenient for sure, and it's much better than not cleaning regularly at all. So if it works better for your busy schedule, then a dishwasher can definitely be a good option. Just be aware that it has more potential to cause some kind of damage over time with your bottle. Hope this helps!

I clean the inside of steel bottles with a paste made from dishwashing liquid, baking soda, and a little bit of water, and a bottle brush with a sponge tip. The baking soda is an abrasive that will scrub off coffee and tea stains. I do the same for ceramic mugs too. I pop the plastic caps in the dish washer, after removing gaskets which I hand wash under the faucet.

Thank you!! This us exactly the kind of review I was looking for. I need a replacement bottle without annoying nooks and crannies. I find that I’m less motivated to clean my water bottle if it’s difficult to clean it properly

For sure, we've been asked this question so many times. Figured it was worth it's own video!

Something I never understand about bottle design is why they need gaskets at all. The standard 1-time use PET bottles and Nalgene bottles seal just fine, even with hot water. As long as they use the right kind of plastic for the cap and mouth of the bottle, there should be no need for gaskets at all.

Great video, I was asking the same questions when I purchased my bottles. I chose then yeti rambler due to the fact it can go in the dishwasher. My dishwasher can run at 75c/175f degrees with a hygiene cycle at the end, and I use each bottle for about 3 days or so before cleaning.

Nice! Yea, I usually recommend handwashing so you can clean it more carefully to prevent damage in the long run, but it's certainly an option. Kind of wild that I forgot to mention that anywhere in this video when I've covered that info in probably 10 other videos. Might edit it and repost.

I think a dishwasher is a good option if the user can accept that the paint will be damaged. I have been using kleankanteen bottle for over 10 years and still my favorite. The bottles have had half the paint removed and I have used paint stripping chemicals to completely remove the paint and continue to use them.

Yea, a lot of these bottles and lids are marketed as being dishwasher safe, so that can be an good option. However, we usually recommend handwashing though to prevent exactly what you mentioned, and I say that in a lot of our videos. But it's funny... the fact that I spent all this time making and editing this video and forgot to say anything about dishwashing is kind of wild, haha. I've said it so many times in the other videos that I think it just slipped my mind and I assumed handwash-only from the beginning.

thanks for the video, was about to get stanley but after watching this, maybe I get kleen kanteen tk series for easier cleaning, I live in hot and humid weather and slime is really big issue on plastic and mouth contact.

If you're worried about a clean bottle, Stanley's Quenchers are pretty good. Wider top that's easier to get a sponge into, and you can disassemble the lid pretty easily. But those leak easily, so they're not my favorite. Also, don't get Iceflow though if cleaning is important to you. I couldn't get the spout off that one to clean under it. I just posted a video about Stanleys if you're curious.

@@bottlepro3252 ah i see, stanley is still my consideration list because wider mouth design, but it is iceflow bottle with "cap and carry" OR "fast flow lid" , cap and carry looks sleek enough but downside is mouth contact is on outer bottle body, so if my bag is dirty then i cannot use it to drink. Fast flow lid got cover for mouth but i hear one user review it will have bad odor if leave water overnight or something

Hi, would you please do a review on the Owala water bottle? If it's possible.

Yea, I recently bought an Owala and have been using it quite a bit. I talked about it in a few videos that go over several bottle brands, but I was thinking about making a stand-alone video just for that brand soon.
