    How cool was it to see Casey Neistat championing smartphone filmmaking? Fit the topic perfectly, too. That and of course Steven Soderbergh using an iPhone to make his feature film "Unsane"... and these guys can afford whatever gear they want. Don't wait to create!

      Question about filming on a cellphone, how do you deal with super small sensor sizes, and deep DOF? I'm sure its much harder to get a good DOF and have good lens control with a cellphone

    • @NWLegacyChannel
      @NWLegacyChannel 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also can smartphones have ND or UV filters?? Would help with the blown out sky on some of your vids

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To get some shallow DOF you can use the Tele lens, 3rd party Tele lenses, ND filters or Beastgrip even makes a DOF adapter to attach traditional photo/video lenses. You can also get the subject closer to the lens to get some nice bokeh.
      We’re spoiled today with all the larger sensor cameras. Wasn’t too long ago that most cameras we all used were 1/3” CCDs, unless you were shooting film. So long story short, you can get shallow DOF looks, but on wider shots and most non telephoto shots everything will typically be in focus.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely. Adding an ND filter is one of the number one things we recommend! We have several videos on our channel on using ND filters. Here’s a review we just did th-cam.com/video/TY69zFw5ORA/w-d-xo.html. And there’s more so just search our channel if you’re interested. Thanks for watching!

      Indeed I am with you on that! Ask I always say, if you heard a noise outside right now, and ran outside with your phone and filmed a UFO on your lawn, I guarantee nobody would be talking about your gear... Only the content! 🎯🎥

    I watched this video almost about a year ago and it really changed my attitude. I always felt that I should only make a film if it's perfect. Since then I have made a bunch of random films and have really gotten good practice from that and now I am getting paid to make videos for people. Soon I will be making my next attempt at a narrative short film, I hope it will turn out great.

    The best, or first TH-cam video in years, perhaps both, that not only did I watch all the way through without growing disinterest, but that was truly and actually educational, detailed, and extremely helpful. I had all my questions answered without needing to dig and search further on TH-cam or the internet. That NEVER happens. Your willingness to share your knowledge without hesitation or keeping secrets is the best gift I’ve received online in a decade. It’s exactly what I needed, when I needed it. Awesome video. Thanks!

    Amazing and inspiring video! I own LOTS of filming equipment, but due to traveling extensively have been searching for the absolute minimalist shooting setup. Im very excited about where cellphones are going with the future of filming, and looking forward to adapting to it rather than fighting to keep spending 10's of thousands on new gear :)

    G'Day mate, I am in the process of making my very first video to post on my TH-cam channel using my second-hand mighty Mavic Pro drone 7& iPhone 7-plus. I am slowly adding to my kit (on a low budget pension) so all the more to be as resourceful as I can. Watching good folk such as yourself helps me learn how to & I truly thank you for that. I have subbed & a big thumbs up man. I am currently learning how best to use Filmic Pro on my phone to film & LumaFusion to edit on my iPad Air. My note to you: The meaning of life is.... I love the tips on using the flat colour profile in Filmic Pro! I've managed to make some films on my own with that feature and really see how it gives the footage more dynamic range. However, I think you could also consider sharing how to focus pull using Filmic Pro. I think that's one of the coolest features of the app, being able to manually adjust focus. Cheers!

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s all about video noise. In lower light with a smaller sensor you get more noise - And shooting log will increase the noise.

    I also shot with filmic pro and the log kit on my iPhone X and have it attached to a DJI Osmo mobile 2 and let me tell you something when you have everything dialed in and have the colors and lighting set it looks like straight out of a multi million dollar production for example shooting a scene were a character gets lost in the forest and tries to find a way out you can give it a legit horror movie look I showed it to some coworkers and they couldn’t believe it was shot on the phone 👍🏻😄 of course I have to improve some things like movement but when you like what you see you’re on a good way

One question is nagging me, what happens to the music you have in your short films if you decide to unsubscribe to the music service where you purchased your music? Great video thank you very much. As a novice I will be pleased if I can shoot 1 film in 20 days, but only doing it for my own enjoyment. Can I ask one thing about Filmicpro. Can you use it to take still photos as well as video? I currently use Osmo mobile 2 gimbal, which I like with DJI app for video and open camera for stills. Open camera is much better than DJI app, in my opinion, but is not integrated with Osmo mobile 2 while Filmic Pro is.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      FiLMiC Pro is a video camera app only. You cannot do stills unless you take a still from a 4K image. Moment Pro Camera app you can do both. But FP is all about video and it’s a very feature rich app.

    Awesome video! I have a quick question for you. I noticed you have a 4 TB hard drive screenshot on one of the videos. Currently, I am backing all of my files up to Google drive as I have unlimited storage. Do you foresee any issues with editing off of these drives? My concern is that they are stored on the cloud and that it may somehow slow things down during editing. However, I cannot find much online about whether this is an issue or not. I am using proxy because I am shooting on iPhone and editing on premiere on a PC.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To our knowledge you can’t truly edit yet from cloud storage like that. But perhaps it’s possible with a fiber connection, but only with low bit rate proxy files would be our guess. We use several fast RAID setups and also some SSDs and it’s not fast enough typically to edit 4K smoothly or without lowering the playback resolution.

    • @johncharles5980
      @johncharles5980 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Appreciate the feedback. No 3rd party lenses except on our last one called Reverse Cycology... that one we used a Moondog Labs anamorphic lens. The rest were all just the phone lens. 📱👍🏻

    I’m still learning filmic pro settings can you just leave iso and shutter alone if you got proper room lightning and shooting outside seems like when i adjust it get image lil darker or lighter than I want is there a auto exposure & focus plus AWB has to be red selected right while you shooting video thanks

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can just lock them after they auto expose, but it’s best to use manual to dial it in. And you definitely lock AWB for best results (to red).

    I wish this technology was around when I went to film school and had to edit on 16 millimeter film. Argh! Digital has made it so much easier. Great video. Question: what audio equipment do u recommend? Thx

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! And we hear you! Filmmakers today have so many great resources at their fingertips that just a few years ago we could’ve only dreamed of... For audio we really like the RODE VideoMicro. It’s a small camera mounted shotgun mic that works well with smartphones and sounds surprisingly great. We highlight it in our Wish List videos if you’d like to see it in action. For lav style mics we like the Sennheiser ClipMic Digital. We reviewed that mic and there’s a video on our channel as well. Lastly, we sometimes use traditional shotgun mics and double system sound (like with a Zoom recorder) and just use the phone for video.

    Can you do all this if filmic pro on an iPhone 6? All the settings mentioned here?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can’t use the Cinematographer’s Kit upgrade to shoot log or flat. You can with the 6s or later, but not the 6. Everything else though should be good to go.

      iPhoneographers is it worth using then on the iPhone 6 or not worth the money?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s definitely worth it for the manual controls and 100Mbps video. That other kit is relatively new. The app has been around since 2012 and you can get great results using it. It’s always been on our highly recommend list.

    What about importing into Filmic Pro from other apps, like the Moment app?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can’t import into Filmic Pro. You just export or transfer the footage you shoot to other apps for editing or color correction.

    I don't have the FiLMic Pro app yet but I am wondering if you can focus pull by setting focal point, locking and then unlocking, set new focal point and then lock again. It would be clumsy compared to a focus ring on a camera but I am wondering if it can be done. I think the DJI Osmo Mobile you can manually adjust focus with a button, that might help.
