- The Russian word СВОЙ is one of the top 1000 words in Russian. In some cases it should be used instead of "my", "your", "his", "her", "its", "their". When exactly? You'll know after watching this video.

он сам не свой - he is not himself; e.g. He behaves strangely.
в своё время - when the time comes; at the right time; for ex: Ты узнаешь всё в своё время.
умереть своей смертью - to die a natural death.
он не в своём уме - he is not in his right mind; e.g. He is doing crazy things.
он свой человек - he is quite at home; e.g. He is a person that we can trust. For ex: Не стесняйся, здесь все свои люди.

Feel free to download and use the table when necessary.
How to work with my video lessons? At first watch it and repeat all Russian sentences out loud and record yourself to check your pronunciation. After watching put down all sentences you can remember. Watch the video again in 5-6 hours and correct the mistakes in your sentences if you have any. Do the homework that I usually give at the end of each lesson. Watch the video again in 2 days and make your own examples with the patterns used.

It also seems to me that Russians tend to shy away from using ANY kind of possessive pronoun when it's obvious that the object belongs to the subject of the sentence. For instance, in English, it sounds perfectly fine to say, "She was walking with her mother." But, I think a Russian would probably say, "Она гуляла с мамой." I don't even think they would say, "Она гуляла сo своей мамой." But, I'm not sure. I'm still learning Russian - but this is what I've gathered through my studies. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Nothing to correct here, David, you are absolutely right. Though gramatically it's correct, but you can never hear: она гуляла с её мамой. Only: Она гуляла с мамой or она гуляла со своей мамой.
Exactly 💯, I observe the same now.... and I am always inclined to translate their version as in your example as such "Anna was walking with the mother" just assuming that this could also be an acceptable variant in English 😅. The language seems to always looks for short cuts)) Thank you for the observation!

Thank you very much! I realize that Russian is much more precise than for example English. In the sentence "He loves his girlfriend", "his" could actually be interpreted as some other guy's girlfriend. ;-) and in the Russian sentence such an interpretation is excluded.

He loves his girlfriend . I liked that example very much . Else people will think he loves not his girlfriend but somebodys . I knew the word cvoyu in songs but now got the meaning . very well explained

3) Каждый дом имеет свой запах. "Запах" is singular masculine in Nominative case
4) Ребёнок убежал от своих родителей. "Родители" is plural, in the sentence it's in Genitive case
5) Катя ничего не говорила о своей семье? "Семья" is singular feminine. We should put it in Prep.case
6) У всех свои радости. "Радости" is plural in Nominative case.
It would be great if you rewatch it again and put down all the forms to check the answers. Thanks for your hard work! Mistakes are VERY helpful, they work better than anything else.

I'm confused. @5:30 the red text to the left says "YOU MAY NOT USE СВОЙ WITH Я, МЫ, ТЫ, ВЫ", but the green Russian text to the right says that we can. And your spoken description seems to imply we can use either СВОЙ or МОЙ, НАШ, ТВОЙ, or ВАШ with such subjects. Which is correct?
You may not use СВОЙ with МЫ. In this case you can use НАШ.

Свой = его собственный.
