    yes typically Indians add mung dal either with skin or without
    But Guyana cooking of course is adopted to the availability of mung dal
    that is why he is using Matar
    but it will be excellent as we lived in the Caribbean I learnt a lot 😀⛱👍🙋

    Dear friends always appreciate the cooking
    never say
    this is not how we do it
    yes every kitchen every cook every region culture and country has different cuisines
    same dish will be modified according to the available resources
    even if everything is available for health reasons you have to modify salt pepper sugar fat etc
    so please learn from all chefs

    My first time 10/28/2020 watching someone cook it, thanks 🙏🏽 I’m sure it’s delish 😋
    I make a good one as well but I put no coconut milk and sometimes I don’t chunkay. I cook my peas like Dhal. Then I add the rice and 1-2 tbsp of oil to prevent sticking, then, I cover mine until it’s done. Depends on the amount of rice, 30-45mins on low heat. So happy I got to see the old time way. Thanks again 👍🏽👍🏽
    Sad someone told me years ago they put coconut milk and I was surprised. So now I know why.

    • @RealNiceGuyana
      @RealNiceGuyana  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, coconut milk is usually added.
      if you do not chunkay it then it is not Kichri, it is split peas cook up. If you are calling it Kichri it has to be chunkayed.

    Please tell me how long the peas have to boil before you put the rice. And if you soak the peas overnight. @realniceguyana

    • @RealNiceGuyana
      @RealNiceGuyana  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Firstly the peas does not need to be soaked overnight. For this recipe we added the peas at the same time with the rice.
      Some people like their peas softer in the Kitchri, so they would boil the peas for about 10 minutes before the rice is added .
      So it all depends on your preference.

    For the people who are say its poor people food...here is an explanation:
    In India The dish was probably originally eaten for breakfast something similar to the watery rice Chines eat called Congee in the morning. Mar and rice was actually a ting in Guyana. My grandmother sometimes ate it. Which we though was gross
    It was also originally for people who we were not well as its mild compared to other dishes
    It used to be well know in England going back to the early 1800's
