Fun fact, In the series riders of Berk, the scauldron is poisonous! It’s the only dragon that isn’t poisoned by the blue oleander, and eats its flowers. Its venom can be used as an antidote to the flowers.
Tidal class is my favorite class, however I’d love to see more outlandish ideas they could do with a sea dragon. The sea shocker was a nice addition, but I’d love to see an octopus dragon or something. And maybe less legs more fins. It’s weird that most of them have legs when many are just aquatic.
Fun fact, the purple death is actually based off the books, and it was actually originally a NAME of a dragon, not the species. The species itself was called the Sea Dragonus Giganticus, explaining the Tidal class classification.
Concerning the Sand Wraith, I actually don’t think it’s that closely related to the Night Fury. Rather, I think it’s a case of convergent evolution, in which the Sand Wraith and Night Fury evolved in similar ways (general body shape, tail ornamentation, built for speed and stealth) due to similar evolutionary pressures, despite not being so closely related. That would explain the different classes.
Yeah but the sand wraith is not built for speed, rather for ambushing from under the sand. The night fury probably evolved from it as it found more success being strike than waiting around for prey to appear in less sandy regions.
I actually think that Sand Wraiths share a common ancestor with the Night Fury that diverged into the two species. Sand Wraiths stayed ambush hunters while Night Furies became the nimble, agile beasts that we know and love. It would makes sense seeing their similar builds and other physical features. Thats just what I think, who knows maybe im wrong or whatever, i don't even know much about the dragons outside the movies.
I highly doubt it's convergent evolution, they are way too similar for that to be the case. biologically they are literally just spikey night furies. I think its glaringly obvious that night furies, light furies, sand wraiths and woolly howls are furies and very closely related
I feel like the sand dragons being Tidal class isn’t that outlandish, they swim through sand as if it was water. Either way I think the Sandbuster and Sand Wraith should be in the same class, its weird that they aren’t. As for the Windwalker, while I agree it fits best for Strike, I do understand the Tidal class description. I think it’s meant to reference albatross, where it spends its entire life flying in the skies above the ocean, rarely venturing beyond the shore. I also imagine that the electricity and water are probably its canon abilities, with the fire in Rise of Berk just being an error as it uses the exact same fire model as most other dragons in that game.
You're right that the sand wraith and the sandbuster should be in the same class. When first described as an ambush dragon that swims through sand, people literally thought it would be a sand wraith
I loved HTTYD as a kid because I had a soft spot for dragons and I still do! Not only they befriended my favorite creatures there but they were also so diverse, unique, real thank to small details I love to research. Your video is great, if only little me knew English well back then she would be thrilled. I have to catch up with another episodes I really enjoy your analysis (and I agree, some shouldn't be in Tidal class), your editing and humor :)! Keep up the good work!
I think if you think of the Sandwraith as something of a mudskipper fish, or draw the comparisons to a flounder more it has an argument for staying tidal, considering there is a description for its behavior. The Windwalker, I think has a strong argument for tidal class if you compare it to sea birds. Something like an osprey or an albatross- detecting storms, diving for food, and using the unique ocean winds to fly long distances
yeah but what about shallow water like maybe the sand wraith hunts in the water which is shallow but deepish And wind walker being like a sea bird or is it just recently evolved to live in the water which makes it lack most features of the tidal class I mean do all dragons need to fit in some are similar but just different
Could, perhaps like the Submaripper was erroneously, the Sand Wraith fit into multiple classes? It looks like a Night Fury, burrows in sand, shoots sand balls, and I presume all subspecies are semi-aquatic.
@@okebedoke That's not exactly the same: as NewOrca stated in his NOT Tracker Class video, Nadders are more Sharp than Tracker, especially since they are the poster child for Sharp Class.
To be fair, Windwalker was based off a species in the books, who was Hiccup's riding dragon. It's appearance is almost one for one, unlike some book species. In the books they were "Sky Dragons" (the books used a different classification system) and it was also a speedy dragon that had electric blasts. Likely should have translated into Strike.
Was lots of fun working with ya on this one. Have to say I didnt know about some of the abilities these bois have, like the TideGliders acid, (note which take do you folks prefare? RiseOfBerk where it doesnt have back legs or SchoolOfDragons where it does? Im the former) or the Krayfin and its giant size or firepower, which looks like its a glob of oil that is ignited. I do wander about some of the ones that can stay underwater for days without surfacing, they are either breathing though their skin like some amphibians do or like some turtles, especially those specialized in diving, are highly reliant on cloacal respiration during dives. They accomplish this by having a pair of accessory air bladders connected to the cloaca which can absorb oxygen from the water. Basically they breath with their buts.
On the subject of tidal class dragons being able to go without oxygen for long periods of time, even the submaripper staying underwater for days, because they are reptiles the best explanation is that they could have similar structures to that of aquatic turtles, in that some species of turtle possess a pair of accessory air bladders connected to the cloaca which can absorb oxygen from the water. This is a process called Enteral Respiration or Cloacal Respiration, which is just sucking water up the butt and diffusing oxygen from it, a process similar to gills but because dragons are reptiles they don't have those.
Personally I agree with the Sand Wraith being a tidal class dragon, it has large lungs and able to stay in the water for long periods of time, said by the website, and it's habitat the beach provides close connection the the ocean so I would imagine ocean fish would be its food source in which it would hunt in the ocean. It's sandy colour suggests it could spend a lot of time close to the sea bed or resting on beaches but overall I think it's a tidal class.
Y'know, I think the Krayfin actually uses these special things cavitation bubbles. They're hotter than lightening and pretty intense. You see it a lot when talking about mantis shrimp, because the force they hit things with causes them (Which is also why they're referred to as tank breakers cause they 100% will shatter glass fish tanks)
For the Luminous Crayfin, it seems like it’s firepower might be something equivalent to a depth charge, so while not very useful on land or in the skies, when dealing with rival tidal class dragons, it’s an incredibly effective weapon. Of course that’s speculation, maybe it’s just a big fireball as shown in the concept art.
I also like the purple death, because it’s a reference to the first how to train your dragon, book, with the green and purple death being both massive sea dragons
This video is amazing on everything, this dude should make more content about this, Tidal Class is one of my favourites, along with Mystery and Strike.

In the books hiccups riding dragon is called a windwalker and the 2nd fastest dragon in the world and the windwalker in this is almost a match to how the windwalker in the books looks so my guess is they put it in as a nod to the books but it didn't like up with any of the classification so they just put it in tidel class for easy. But the books are good and you should read them they are very different to the films in a good way but there are 12 of them but it is very Very much worth it

Sand wraiths look a lot like night furys! Maybe they're an ocean adept sub species, just like my head cannon where light furys just adapted to the hidden world.
My hypotheses: the sliquifer (pronounced like slick and aquifer combined, without the ‘ah’ sound) is a distant relative of the scauldron, having separated from that lineage in a similar way with dolphins from whales. So we could call them the cetacean dragons. I also think that Whispering Deaths share a common ancestor with Thunderdrums, as they have very similar jaws, body shapes, and wing placement. The legs of Whispering Deaths could have just gone vestigial, while the scream came from the fact that concave jaws make for great echo chambers.
But the Tidal Wave, while kinda similar at least in theory, is not related to scauldrons at all. Oddly enough, it seems like its hind legs, of all things, had evolved into wings. I think this puts it separate from pretty much any other dragon in all HTTYD. On the other hand, all four of the scauldron’s four legs became vestigial.
