Stacy, I am a DJ of 30 years. At a wedding this summer, I did a glowing heartfelt introduction of the father and bride dance… introduced them to the floor and one minute into the song realized I was calling her dad by the wrong name the entire time. My face was so red. Point is, mistakes happen to the best of us. And watching you in these videos, you are amazing at what you do.
Oof! I'm guessing that won't ever happen again anytime soon! Thanks for the compliment.. it's taken years in training to get this far - some days I still feel like I'm in training!

Thankfully, we are fortunate enough to work with clients that get it.

Another great video and fab insight into the use of the side fills. The band is really tight and the new drummer was spot on. Stacey, don’t beat yourself up, we all make mistakes, you held your hand up, good on you. We once finished a set and our bass player was keen to pack up and started unplugging power and unplugged the DJ who still had an hour set to play 😂. We ribbed him mercilessly for a long time after that 😂
This is a great venue. Very weird compared to standard venues. I didn't use any fills last year, but I may consider it if I find myself.there again. Great show!
Hi Bill - It appears you are familiar with this place! We found they "sort of expected" that we would cover these areas, specifically up the side to the food trucks.
Don't sweat it Stacy. We've all done it. I was working as stage manager supporting a 9 piece horn band. It was an outdoor gig at my local amphitheatre for a Brew Festival. Singer's wireless was dropping out. I waved to FOH multiple times, but they were busy not watching the stage. There were 5 people in the FOH tent. So I said screw it. I unplugged the wireless. "POP". Then I plugged in a wired SM58. "POP". That got FOH's attention. Later FOH engineer started on me about unplugging the cables during the show. I told him that you had 5 people in the tent and no one was paying attention. He said I should have ran to FOH. I said you need to watch the stage. I'm 6'4" 350 pounds. I'm hard to miss. Since then, no more distractions allowed in the FOH tent.
Love the story and the outcome! Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do to make the gig successful! (And give "subtle" reminders to even the seasoned pros!)

Interesting gig. Matrix mixes certainly make life a bit easier. Only critical factor in those spaces is the weather as you well know. Enjoying your videos 🖖
Matrix functionality in the digital world and specifically with the PreSonus Series 3 takes it to a new level. PreSonus did this well in that's it's easy to do and very flexible. I think we are back next year so we have another chance to wrestle with the weather!

You are awesome guys, love your videos. i have one question. You never realy talked about drum microphones. Which microphones do you use on drums? And do u use overheads on drums?
Our common drum package includes Sennheiser 604's for toms and snare. Shure Beta 52 for kick and Oktava condenser for HH and Overheads. In this video, the band provides their own mics which are Audix mics - D6 on the kick...not sure what the other ones are.
Why I have a 2 in 4 stereo copy rack unit now! I can copy my mains to 3 other pairs of Auxiliary Mains! Downside, is its analog. If I could find a digitally controlled one, that would be awesome!
For clarification, we have worked with them for quite a few years now, more over the past few. If you are referencing the prior video, that was a unique situation to support their line-up transition but they have been using IEM's for a couple of years now.
Hello All right with you. Here in Brazil we have a concern for the same small sound systems, we have an obligation passed from technicians to technicians to align the sound system through the use of software such as Smaart and Rita with the help of calibrated microphones. I see that you don't have that much concern in this regard. Can you talk a little bit about how you go about aligning and optimizing your system.
We rely on the PreSonus DSP software that comes with the cabinets. Once we set it up, we don't tend to mess with it at the shows. Our sound is sourced from the stage so there is minimal concern with delay and phasing. If something doesn't sound right, we will use our ears and experiment if any changes with polarity or delaying subs makes it sound better.
Is there a backline company in the area? For gigs that require a much larger audience area, consider renting additional sets of powered speakers and power distribution for it. That area could be covered very nicely with 3 pairs of FOH speakers set 120 degrees apart. This would place a FOH speaker every 60 degrees. The limiting factor is the logistics and budget. Propose the additional coverage with additional cost to the event organizer. Having the extra hands of the backline company to set up the 2 additional pairs of FOH and power allows for a reasonable load in and load out. While the backline is loading out, you could be packing the stage to load out immediately following the backline company.
Perhaps, but to put it into context, these are city sponsored events with limited budgets and this is the area they host these events. I know they have had sound challenges but are likely placing the "blame" on the entertainment because they don't understand that the venue design is he real challenge. Most bands simply are not prepared to provide the coverage they want...I am sure they hear the complaints so they share their concerns with with the acts and leave it to us to hopefully figure it out. In a perfect world, they would be bringing in outside production or we would be provided the budget and weather coverage to do the job right. I am not so sure a bigger production would honestly want to touch this one. It would be difficult to get bigger trucks down to the stage without tearing up a bunch of grass so they would likely need to load from the street and with no weather protection within proximity, I could see it getting very expensive and risky.
@@thesoundcouple Production companies are unlikely to take a 2 hour gig with a large production setup. When taking a job such as this, make it clear and submit a stage plot to show the committie the area with good coverage and if additional areas need covered, that would require additional equipment and expense, then recommend they contact a backline company for any additional recommended equipment. Provide a list of what you bring to the party and a list of not included but recommended additional to solve the shortcomings.

Hi Joe - we really haven't focused on it because our typical applications generally don't require us to apply delay to speakers. Stage Left Audio has a good overview video on the principles of delays if you are interested in learning more.
