  • A retrospective of the film and TV career of the marvellous William Hartnell, the original DOCTOR WHO. He made far too many films to be able to list them all, but all of his most critically-acclaimed roles are included here, including The Army Game, Odd Man Out, Brighton Rock and This Sporting Life.

William Hartnell was a brilliant Doctor but besides that he was a great actor in his own right.

You can really see how much he was struggling in that Life with Johnny clip. He was so controlled and quick in the other clips before his health started to betray him at the end of his run on Who. What a treasure.

When you look at all of these roles he done here, it's an utter myth he just played sergeant major roles. He had a massive variety of roles to play.
Where can I get that Life With Johnny episode? That's a rarity. I believe it used to be on TH-cam but the account is no longer here.

What a great actor. It's both sad and shocking how much he deteriorated between 1969 and 1972 when he reprised his roll as the first Doctor. Even his voice sounds like someone in their 80's not mid 60's. He passed away at the age of 67 as did the second Doctor Patrick Troughton and the word lost two great character actors. It was very enjoyable seeing him in most of his film appearances.

Will any Gentleman? 1953 Brother Charley (Jon Pertwee) the 1st and 3rd Doctors meet onscreen 20 years before the 10th anniversary special, did anyone notice a blue police box about?

Dial 999 also features Patrick Troughton another meeting of two doctors before they played the role

@@bendream544 so Hartnell actually hired Troughton for the job himself to be the doctor 😮

He did have a bit of a reputation for playing tough guys before Doctor Who...I read a biography that described him as "The British James Cagney"

Hartnell acted in 75 movies. none of the other actors had a career as long as him.

Sure but would be cool to see these older doctors in other roles since a lot of their roles are in relativeöy obscure films and shows today.

    Me: good morning
    Hartnell: attention quick march me
    Myself: old fuss pot
Me: what should I do in the uk You are the wisest oldest first me tell me what you think my destiny should be
Bill: focus on your education first before deciding my boy 😊
