We take a look at how concerns over the TARDIS crew dynamic led to the last minute decision to add a young Scottish piper to their ranks, and how this developed into one of the most successful TARDIS teams in the long history of the programme...

Fun Fact: The woman speaking to Jamie in the scene that plays from 8:34 to 9:36 is Pauline Collins, better known for playing Queen Victoria in the episode "Tooth and Claw" in 2006. In that episode, Queen Victoria meets Rose Tyler and The Doctor, who introduces himself as "James McCrimmon".

I think my favorite aspect of the duo that was The Doctor and Jamie was that they seemed to be on equal ground. The Doctor never looks down on Jamie and Jamie is never really in awe of the Doctor, despite one being a Time Lord and one being a Highlander. No other companion, especially at that time, has really captured that again

I always felt Jamie has one of the most tragic endings. He loses the memory of his best friend, his first love, the girl who was like a sister to him and also the skills and advancements are all forgotten.
Almost parallels the fate of Donna Noble.

I appreciate that the 60th specials included the 'memory Tardis' shorts which reunited Jamie's and Zoe again, they'd lived good lives, and they FINALLY got their memories back. I may have shed a tear or two.
Plus, I love the idea of Jamie living happily ever after as a laird and father of 5 daughters. Given Zoe, even with her memories erased, named her son James I feel it stands to reason his daughter's are called 'Polly, Samantha, Victoria, Zoe and Astrid (or Anne!)' 😁
Frazer Hines's contribution to Big Finish is legendary. His Troughton impressions make me feel like it is indeed good old Pat talking!
I loved hearing his story about how he developed his Troughton impression at conventions where he would do that thing where he cups his hands together and say “well you see Jamie” in one of the behind the scenes material in one of the Companion Chronicles.
I do think that number 10 and Donna Noble had great comedic chemistry that was quite similar and definitely a very close second.
Coincidence as well when you realise they also both had similar fates.

Thats not ironic. Irony is the oposite of what would be expected, so a character with a similar comedic dynamic to jamie having a similar fate to his would not be the opposite of what is expected at all. What you are describing is a coincidence.

Never cared for Donna, always found her overated. Granted it doesn't help that I find Catherine Tate painfully unfunny. 🤷♂️
Completely disagree. Felt directionless at times. There's lots of "catherine tate show comedy" in 4 i cannot stand.

The warmth, humour and mutual respect that characterised the second Doctor and Jamie’s relationship made them one of the most relatable Tardis pairings in the show’s history.
The silly uncle and nephew is the best way to describe Jamie and Troughton's relationship

I've always had a crush on Jamie McCrimmon, and this video solidifies it. I love his relationship with The Doctor. Never sexual but always affectionate. The new series needs more companions from different times.

Patrick Troughton and Frazer Hines were as valued for male bonding on Doctor Who as Kirk, Spock and McCoy were on Star Trek. Thank you for your thoughtful companion review on Jamie. 👍🏻
Wouldn't it be great if Jamie/Frazer returned for one last episode. The current Doctor could encounter Jamie as an old Highlander/who would be essential to the episode (Yeti anyone?) and at the end return Jamie's memories of them together. I wish I was rich so I could sack Chibnall and produce the episode myself.

Frazer Hines was the first Who-celeb I met at Convention. I was like 13. Nicest guy - bought me a magazine.

Jamie has always been my favourite companion, even the chemistry of Tom Baker and Elizabeth Sladen just falls short of that of Troughton and Hines.
Troughtons Doctor and Jamie are my favourite TARDIS team. Best friends through time and space.
My mother had such a huge crush on Fraser Hines she ended up naming me after Jamie McCrimmon.
I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Jamie. He's brave, absurdly loyal, and (something of a rarity, these days) courteous to women -without being condescending, - in the old fashioned way that now seems to be derided, alas! Maybe not the brightest star in the firmament, but still the kind of person you want next to you in a scrap. He and the Second Doctor had a wonderful rapport. I'm sore grieved we never got to see "Laird of the McCrimmon", though.

I would absolutely have loved to see him interact with a more recent Doctor/Companion dynamic. Some of the best pats of Two Doctors was the Jamie Sixth Doctor interactions.

I’ve always adored Jamie! And his chemistry with the second Doctor was brilliant! 😊 such a great duo!
I wish they had brought him back for the new series in some way. Maybe the Tardis could’ve landed in Scotland in the 1790’s when Jamie would’ve been older, and despite not knowing anything about the Doctor at the start, over the course of the story he would start to remember his previous adventures.
I always found Jamie's and Zoe departure rather cruel - other companions were left to keep their memories of their adventures (unless they died like Adric for one)
Dr Donna Noble lost her memories too. A tragic end for another best companions. I would say she was the 2nd best companion ever, after Jamie. Magic. Perfect pairs. The arrogant but wonderful Tennant really needed a 'take no shit' working woman to make him aware of his hubris and limitations. Troughton was my childhood favorite and my 20 year old son just told me he agrees that Pat and Jamie were the best Dr Who outside of his generations Eccleston and Tennant under RTD. Who made 'Nu Who' the great show IT WAS!!!! It died horribly under Moffat's clueless with characters direction and the corpse got burned by Cribnall. Just like in the 80's!

In some way I'd argue death is actually less sad. There's something so terrible about the idea of them forgetting about The Doctor. It makes it somewhat like their adventures never even happened in the first place

Many people forget the importance of Jamie as a Companion and his relationship with the 2nd Doctor.
The fact you showed that clip from Abominable Snowmen when the Doctor gets terrified that Jamie has an idea... THANK YOU!
It's fascinating how much Jamie changed during his run with the Doctor. He came in being a scottish highlander from the 1700s who grew up with no knowledge of the world and with a very primitive mind that reflected the primitive era of the highlanders. Throughout his run, Jamie became exposed to so much futuristic science, unworldly monsters, different eras of the earth, all kinds of people and many different living conditions and norms that by the end of his run Jamie had become a formal, educated and a more modern person with a scottish accent. The sheer difference in Jamie between The Highlanders and The War Games is just fascinating.
And to make it all completely devastating, Jamie, much like Donna Noble, gets his memory wiped and loses all of that knowledge, wisdom and personal growth he had gained. He was transformed back to his former primitive self in the dangerous and bloody world of the highlanders.
Jamie will always be one of my favourite companions of all time.

I recently listened to the three audio dramas with the Sixth Doctor and Jamie after watching this and had a wonderful time. I have truly grown to appreciate Jamie as a top tier companion over the years and those three stories really solidified it for me.
Now I want to watch more of the Patrick Troughton era.
I absolutely love Patrick and Fraser, they are my favourite Doctor & companion team. The episodes even when mediocre are always enjoyable and fun because of the wonderful chemistry they had. I’d give anything to have more Troughton stories. What a Doctor he was, I still think he’s the definitive take on the character.
I won’t lie when I say that I’m not that familiar with Jamie, having only seen him in Five/Two Doctors, Tomb and Enemy, but from what I’ve seen he’s an excellent companion. The documentary here really does the character justice. It’s interesting how a companion from long ago could be so successful considering the careless approach I’ve heard some of the Hartnell ones endured.
You need to watch The War Games. It’s an epic 10 part episode that is the end of the second doctor as-well as the introduction of the Time Lords as a race. It’s a really cool concept that works wonderfully on screen and is one of my favorite stories of all time.
What a legend, watching this on his birthday, happy birthday Frazer!

The idea of having the doctor screw up recreating his companion's face from memory as a justification for using a different actor for the episode is actually pretty clever. Kind of makes it a bit of a character moment
Yes indeed, that's been really a creative way to deal with the absence of an actor due to sick leave or whatsoever. And it fits well into the surrealistic story. When I've first seen that episode I really thought that was another test for the Doctor.
Jamie is my favourite ever companion, and I feel like more show companions should be drawn in from different time periods outside of the present of the film
Remembering how Jamie and Zoe had their memories erased, Donna's fate is still sad but not unheard of.

Did my 5th rewatch of your videos while sat by the pool on holiday 😅. One thing I'd like to add about the two Doctors is I think Colin should get credit for being able to establish good chemistry with himself and Frazer. Couldn't have been easy after seeing how effortless Patrick and Frazers chemistry was.

I always loved the relationship between Jamie and The Doctor. There are some comics that collected comic strips from Doctor Who magazine written by Grant Morrison where the 7th Doctor meets up with a much older Jamie. He's been shunned by his clan for being crazy because he didn't forget his time with The Doctor, and he gets one last adventure with the Time Lord. If you can find the two books, they're definitely worth a read (I mean, Grant Morrison writing Doctor Who!). I love your videos, brother! I hope you do more of the Companions!

Just totally blown away by your analysis. Thank you for a wonder 1/2 hour or so. I can't make up my mind if I'd like the next one to be either Jo Grant or Sarah Jane, who along with Jamie, are my trio of favourite Companions. Thank you for all your hard work and the pleasure it gives.
Anyone interested in jamies big finish stuff should also check out "the glorious revolution" which probaly has my favorite depiction of jamie as a character in all his appearances. Id also reccomend "the jigsaw war" as a really good jamie story as well.

Thank you for your amazing videos on the Doctors and this Amazing video on one of my favorite companions Jamie ! I’m a huge Dr. Who fan here in the U. S., and your vids help me relieve stress. Excellent analysis - a partnership right up there with Sarah Jane and Doctor 4 - never equalled or surpassed - the balance between the characters is spot on with some cracking japery which avoided being silly. I loved the dynamics between these two - the scene in Tombs where the Doctor and Jamie go to hold hands with Victoria to comfort her ; holding each others in error then realise what they have done and soon let go always raises a smile. As you said their pairing still ignites in The Two Doctors, although this story isn't too bad , it's their appearence which prevents it from flat lining completely - if only they had kept Jamie on in the 6th Doctors televised adventures then the execrable Trial of a Timelord may have been that more bearable. Jamie could have been the one to have, now and again, told Mel to calm the **** down when it was vitally needed. Brilliant stuff.

Author Diana Gabaldon’s ‘Outlander’ book series (book 9 to be published soon) hero Jamie Fraser, who was based originally on Jamie McCrimmon. ‘Outlander’ is now a successful Starz series having just finished its fifth season.

As always, a great documentary... I particularly enjoyed the fact that you managed to find that clip of him with Chaplin, which I hadn't seen before. I would have mentioned the fact that Fraser has appeared in more episodes of Doctor Who than anyone other than the first four Doctors... And perhaps a mention of the 'season 6b' idea which Big Finish are now expanding to explain some problems with the Five Doctors and the Two Doctors.
And now we have Tales of the TARDIS, which brought Jamie and Vickie together and restored their memories
And in their own words, though both had forgotten their adventures, they remembered their learned experiences and carried them throughout their lives, which I think is a fitting end
Great stuff as always. As someone in the animation industry, I'd love to watch an episode all about the animated reconstructions of the lost episodes.

Jamie McCrimmon was, and is, a Folk Hero for me - when I was a kid in the 1960s, and now.
Important to note when talking about people from the past, they are not uneducated, merely not yet aware of what lies ahead in the future. Even if they have not been to school (ie from the middle ages) they are still 'educated' and would be knowledgeable or skilled in many ways that we ironically wouldn't be able to match today.
I haven't watched much of Jamie in the series but in a short span of time since I came to know his character last year I came to like and saw thst he is absolutely one of the best companions (if not the best.)

Yeah, Jamie was definitely the best part of the Two Doctors and it makes me wish we coulda somehow gotten more stories that paired him up with Doctor #6 on TV
Colin manages to channel just enough of Troughton's character to feel like there's still that affection there, without losing his own take on the Doctor -- and Jamie might be a little thrown at first but he isn't taking any of 6's BS lying down.
Gonna go looking for those Big Finish sets now, at least :)

Admittedly, I've seen very few of the stories he's in (for obvious reasons), but it really was a great dynamic. I've never heard of any of the actor relationships being remotely close (outside of Baker/Ward which was a different dynamic). The thing I think worked is they understood the difference between intelligence and education. Jamie was intelligent. The knowledge gap meant he'd never fully understand the details of every situation he was in, but he could think on his feet and come up with solutions to problems.

I first listened to the Sixth Doctor/Jamie audio trilogy just a few months ago and loved it! Especially 'Legend Of The Cybermen', which without spoiling it for those who haven't listened to it (Although you totally should) Is easily one of my favorite Big Finish stories ever. So glad you mentioned it in this video and great work as always! Can't wait for Part 11 of your review series (With the TENTH DOCTOR!) ;)

Wow! Another brilliant video to add to your already impressive body of work! I have only seen a handful of Jamie's adventures but he quickly became one of my favorites! I was excited and saddened to hear about the never made third yeti outing. Excited for what could have been for Jamie' and saddened even more about the bittersweet ending he got In The Wargames. Your videos continue to blow me away and I will always steer newer fans of Doctor Who in the direction of your TH-cam channel. Simply put..you are making the finest retrospectives on Doctor Who ever. I loved Jamie’s dynamic with the Doctor, but also with all four other companions. I love the sibling relationships with them that still somehow differed, having a different kind with Ben and Polly to the one with Zoe. His relationship with Victoria is harder to pin for me but they had great chemistry and I loved seeing them together. It’s sad that in the end he doesn’t remember Victoria or Zoe, and barely the other three :( Also, really loving this companion series so far!!!
