  • Sighting in and getting a feel for my new (to me) Sharps Quigley.
I had been pining away for a Sharps rifle for some time. Unfortunately, I wasn't going to be able to afford a Shiloh Sharps. When I had the opportunity to snag this one. I jumped on it. It is used but well cared for. The gun itself is a Pedersoli Sharps falling block action with a 34" octagonal barrel. Pedersoli tang sight with a hooded globe -style front sight.
For anyone who has seen "Quigley Down Under" this rifle is modeled after the gun from the movie. With the exception being that this one is chambered in 45-70 gov rather than 45-110.
I know it isn't a Shiloh, but this rifle is GORGEOUS. I think it's a keeper.

Enjoy! I have the same rifle but it has had a steady diet of 2F black powder using home-cast 405 and 500 grain bullets. Black powder reloading and shooting is more involved but great fun. After my first outing with the Quigley, I bought a shoulder recoil pad to save my shoulder. It is VERY accurate with BP and heavy bullets. Mine is limited by my 80 year-old eyes. My grandson may inherit this rifle in a few years.

I have one of these and I'm in love with mine, it's very accurate and does it's best with 400 gr bullets, such a nice show, keep up the good work !!

A wise purchase! But make sure you always put it to half cock before dropping the lever, I have a similar Sharps in 45-120 but that does give more recoil with a 550 grn bullet, so I re stocked it with a full buttplate pistol grip stock. Enjoy! Chris B.

I'm still learning about the graduations on my Lee shaver tang sight. I'm thinking you had to add 6 MOA to your tang sight for that second group? Your right! That baby is a shooter! I actually just bought Quigley rifle from Cabelas last month and haven't had a chance to go out and put rounds down range just yet. I cant wait!

Beautiful rifle. I think Sagebrush Longshots have a video on the rear sight adjustments, like you say once you start to use it, the settings make more sense. I currently have an IAB/ Sile Sharps and have shot some of the 405 grain bullets with good results, but have moved to 500 grain bullets from Hunters Supply with good results over Accurate 5744.

Very promising. Will you stay with the smokeless or do you plan to move to black powder?

Your setting the sights a skosh higher did the trick!

Had the same rifle and it was extremely accurate. I have a 63 Shiloh got it used in great condition and is a good shooter. Shiloh and C sharps are great rifles but you can buy two Pedersoli sharps and sometimes 3 for the price of a Shiloh or C sharps. Not waiting 3 years for a custom sharps or someone telling me my Pedersoli is trash. The two Montana rifles are nice but not that nice for the money they charge to buy one.

Beautiful gun! Would like to know how you are doing with it a year later?

I use 24 gr of IMR-4227 or 34 gr of IMR-4198. Lighter recoil from 4227. 350 gr projectile.

Recoil would be a lot more if you were using the proper load. 45-110 540 grain bullet doing 1300 fps will drive that butt plate into your shoulder and make you wish it had the shotgun stock.

45-110 in a 45-70? My guess is you meant the 45-110 is a better gun cartridge? Ps I like your channel too and learned a lot from you. Hope to see you at Quigley this year.

When your opening the breach with the lever it would be best to come back to half-cock position with the hammer to avoid damaging your firing pin. Nice rifle take good care of it.

take a look at the block, if the firing pin spring is still there the firing pin retracts into the block regardless

Once more, a second rate Sharps. Why these folks don't pony up the extra money for the top drawer C. Christian or Shiloh is beyond me.

      Second rate how?

    • @normanbraslow7902

SmeatPlays. Simple. The fit and finish of the C. Sharps and Shiloh are just a bit better. Makes sense, as they're really custom made. Pedersoli is a large company that makes lots of firearms. No possible way the care they can put into crafting the rifles is the equal of C. Sharps and Shiloh. Second, the American wood is higher quality. Third, the C. Sharps and Shiloh are more technically accurate in dimensions and profile. I'm not saying the Pedersoli is junk, they are well made. Just not quite as good. For the amount of money involved, best go for the best.

@@normanbraslow7902 well I’ve got to give it to you, I did some research and needless to say yesterday I was talking to the nice lady at C.Sharps about a custom order. Shiloh told me almost 2 years to have an order done, C. Sharps gave me 10 months. Expecting a call from them today to finalize

SmeatPlays The only real "advantage" of the Shiloh over the C. Sharps is the reputation it got from the movie "Quigley Down Under". Shiloh is for sale, and that does not bode well. Since they are, literally, a stones throw from each other in Big Timber, the competition for quality is rather intense. The only reason I have a Shiloh was fortuitous, it kind of fell into my lap. It was a carbine, and I had it re barreled in .45-110, as I wanted to hunt the big stuff with it. Supposedly, the .45-110 has a bit flatter trajectory, a bit more range, and almost the same knockdown punch as the .50-90 at the reasonable hunting range of 100-150 yards. For hunting, the standard sights are fine. The fancy, and pricy, long range sights are best for target shooting, as are double set triggers. It depends on what you want to do with it. When I got my bison, using 540 grain paper ed bullets, at 150 yards one hit in the spine through the shoulders was all it took. He dropped like a bolt of lightning hit him. I will tell you, unless you chamber it in standard .45-70, working up black powder hand loads will be an adventure in itself. I'd have it no other way.

I have a pedersoli special long range fit and finish is fine not all of us have the extra cash to spend 5 0r 6 thousand dollars on a sharps. And as long as it has that kind of accurcy i dont see a problem With the pedersoli
