How do the best shooters in the World resize their brass for maximum accuracy?

  • As you know, I ruffled a lot of feathers with this video when I told shooters to quit simply neck sizing their brass and F/L sizing with 0.002" shoulder bump was best. • STOP NECK SIZING YOUR ...
    I decided to ask the pros how they size their brass to make sure it wasn't just me. There's always a possibility that what I believe is wrong, so I decided to go out and ask to make sure. Enjoy!

      20 years of reloading, I always thought neck sizing was the most important thing for accuracy in brass prep. I'm convinced I was wrong. However, I would like to know if there is a significant difference in the cheap dies I use, compared to their dies? Is neck sizing better than using a $30 full length die?

    • @twilightroach4274
      @twilightroach4274 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Canon Kroh if you are just a hunter, you can get away with using cheap reloading gear. If you are a competition shooter I believe that you only get the results that you pay for.
      Btw I anneal (AMP) & full length resize every time.

    as a guy who has shot BR for a long time - I've had a number of match winners over the years with my personal "best of match" being an 056 (6PPC at 100). when I got into the game, I was mentored "back in the day" to neck size only...as a result - that's all I have done with my BR gun and all my bolt guns - only FL sizing when they "needed" it. I must say that, I have been watching your videos...and you have really convinced me.... I need to change....and for the record - your videos never "made me mad"....I just needed to approach with an open mind, understand and embrace the paradigm shift. Thanks for what you do....attempt to do - help us to be better shooters. Who says an old dog can't learn.

    Erik, I just found your reloading show, the first time I was aware of you was on Off The Ranch when you built Matts Texas Barndamindium clubhouse. I was pleasantly surprised to see that you also have a reloading channel. I have only been reloading for a couple of years, turning 68 in another week, so who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I'm mainly reloading to cut down on the cost of ammo, that way I can shoot more, I've only tried 300 yds friendly competition a couple of times, and I enjoyed it. What you should include is that all of the pros use custom reamed chambers so that the brass is worked to a minimum even when FL sizing. The said sizing dies are adjusted to only bump the shoulder around 1 to 2 thou anyway. Not even mentioning the few that even use custom sizing dies.
    Buying a rifle off the shelf, like most normal people, is a bit of a lottery with regards to chamber dimensions. For the unlucky ones that get "generous tolerance" chambers, you either replace the brass regularly or risk head-case seperation, replace the barrel with a tighter chamber or neck-size the brass. Neck-sizing is cheaper.

    Hi Erik. Thanks for this and the previous video on neck sizing. Based on these, I've stopped neck sizing only and see an all-round improvement in my groups and consistency over multiple reloads :)
    My method is slightly different in that I use a Redding body die and then a Redding neck bushing die. This, I guess, does the same as the Type-S die, but in 2 operations and my neck runout is nearly unmeasurable.
    Question - have you ever tested the Forster bushing bump dies which only size the neck and bump back the shoulder without resizing the body? It seems to me that these may offer an advantage in bullet concentricity with the bore.
    Please keep producing your great educational and interesting videos! :)

      Do not size brass without sizing the body. It will cause issues.
      What you are doing is fine.

    I started reloading with my old man when I was 7 years old. When he was explaining the different dies to me, he pointed to the neck sizing die & said, don't use those, ALWAYS full length size. Did that ever since, even when I started getting my own equipment & reloading on my own.

    @erik cortina hey what would you suggest to reduce horizontal stringing.? And another question if you have more volume after 1st firing would you accommodate the extra volume say .1 grain?

    Im a novice handloader and I had a bad experience with neck sizing only. I purchased a neck sizing die because of some videos I had seen. I ran some tests with FL sizing vs neck sizing and saw minimal difference in accuracy. Here is where neck sizing only was a problem for me...……..I loaded some rounds for hunting that were neck sized only and they chambered fine but about two months later I went to chamber one and it stuck. I thought it might be just the one round but 7 out of 10 of the hunting rounds were too tight to use. I will be shoulder bumping from now on.

    Dammit years ago i bought Redding Type S dies (neck sizing dies) after buying into the internet "knowledge " feeling dumb now.... I guess the one saving grace item is the sets came with body dies so it appears I still might be ok but it has added another step to my ocd loading procedure. After years of trial and error admittedly I am still learning. New sub here and appreciate the content, anxious to learn.

    Hello Eric, Great topic. I’m wondering, all these pros ... are they using standard FL dies like the average Joe buys (RCBS, Redding, etc) or are their dies custom made with tight FL specs for the chamber of the rifle they shoot?

    Eric,
    What brand fl die do you use? What is your chamber die reamer specs vs the dies reamer specs. My point is when you have a commercial mass produced FL die bushing die or not compared to say your match chambered 284 Win or 7rsaum. That die is going to size the body down much more than needed. I am not speaking of the shoulder bump. That is a given it should be done. But the dies size down the body diameter too much.
    Now if you have a custom die based off your chamber reamer but 0.004-5 less to account for spring back giving you 0.002 clearance. Basically you want the body to fit with j7st enough room to allow for expansion and spring back after firing for a clean unchambering. No clicks from not enough base sizing. Or tge very best choice is to fire 3 case 3 times full loads and send them off to Mr Warner and have him make his die for you. Then do the same for everything else you handload and he will make the custom inserts for that same die body.
    Do you agree that for the best fit and consistency the FL die should be Spec'd off the chambers specs or even viseversa Pojt being the chamber and the die should be related in specs. Not just a universally say a 6mmCreedmoor die tgats made off the min SAAMI ammo spec but off the specific reamer that made your chamber. It's why IMO it's worth dropping to coin on that first Warner FL Die and going forward buying the inserts for other cases. 3 full power load firings with only sizing the neck will give a case that is a very good inverse match to the chamber i.e. a slip fit in terms of body diameter spec fit. This gets you a die that sizes only the min needed for 100% reliable cycling not more. Mark Warner knows his stuff in so many areas of precision shooting but IMO no one touches him when it comes to die making & design.

    I've learned to listen to people with hands on experience. It'll save you time, money, and possible injury regardless of the type of advice. At work I'd take the job advice of a 24 year old who's been doing the job for 4 years over the 30 year old who's been there 1 year.

    Using a rifle that cost almost $10,000, a powder dispenser that cost $5,000, and a rifle rest that cost almost $1,000 I find it hard to believe that you would desecrate it by using a Saami-spec chamber! Tell you what , settle the argument. ....Get an off the shelf Walmart gun and do a video on neck sizing vs. Full length in it! Because that's what the majority of people out there are using. Then compare it to shooting neck size from your custom gun.
    And while you're at it, use something other than premium brass, team Lapua! Maybe Remington or Winchester like the rest of us.

      @ErikCortina  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      😂
      How will that settle anything?
      I have compared neck sizing to F/L sizing in my competition rifles. I used what worked best in testing as do all these other guys I interviewed. You can do your own testing in your rifle and do what works best for you. Use good components, no need to hinder your loads with cheap components.

      Erik Cortina please start specifying in your sizing videos that everyone is basing their answer on their $10,000 competition rifles. Then you'd be speaking the truth! Man up Amigo.
