In the beginning, I was intrigued, but also sort of confused in a way because I was lumping different styles of gardens together. It wasn’t until I began more seriously researching Japanese gardens and undergoing an apprenticeship in Osaka and Fukui that I began to grasp the differences in the 4 types of Japanese garden design. I crave calm. I akso feel like the front entrance or first part of the home where people enter should be austere and muted. The tea garden style is if the person gets past the formal entrance. thanks for your videos. I feel somehow understood.

Thank you for this. I live in a condo with an adjacent raised garden that is 30" above ground, and an irregular shape approx. 7' x 9'. I'm trying to create a Japanese-style garden within those confines. Fortunately, the background includes a beautiful dogwood tree and evergreens. The Tsubo-niwa is the obvious choice, and I'm attempting to keep it simple - not an easy task for a plantaholic! Thx again

I just wanted to say thanks for producing such great video content and also for covering this subject matter so thoughtfully. I've been doing a fair amount of hardscaping with large boulders (5-10klbs +), stairs and paths and stumbled upon your videos while looking for inspiration. I've had some great takeaways but looking for even more content about paths, rock gardens and sculpture. Do you have any books to recommend? I'd love to have something (in addition to your videos) to share with clients for inspiration and ideas. I have two questions, what is the vertical sculpture in this video at 3:15 and where can I find out more about the rake that is used to create the rows in the sand. A very pretty, overlooked Japanese garden is the Mytoi Garden on Chappaquidick Island.

Did you mean 11ft x 11ft ? 11ft2 is very small right?
🤦🏻You're right! I meant 11ft x11ft. You do see many 11ft x 2 ft gardens in front of restaurants or with a garden wall behind them. Courtyard gardens are usually bigger than that though.
What is the name of the garden at 9:00?
This is from the The Japanese Garden in Shitennoji Temple called the Gokuraku-Jodo Garden, or the Garden of Paradise. Specifically the dry rock garden is called the "Fudaraku Garden." Here is some more info on it: shizenstyle.com/japanese-garden-in-shitennoji-temple-gokuraku-jodo-garden/

I have no idea what this guy is about, you don't look angry at all to me. Anyway, I subscribed for your knowledge and analyses of japanese gardens, there are too few serious videos on the matter.
That never across my mind that he looks angry. Some people could be misjudged because of their natural facial expression.

This is such a wonderful primer. I am now thinking how best to improve (or rather restore) my garden in Tokyo. The woman who built the house spent a lot of time thinking about little details and there are lots of decisions for me as to if/how I should keep her layout or change to something new.
Keep the areas that speak to you, add your own voice to the rest. A blend of the traditional and the modern is a great way for the garden to continue to grow and be a link to different generations. Try not to create something where the maintenance overwhelms you later though 😏
