Richard Hammond found a spanking new 90 and 110 in the middle of the woods somewhere and it looks like he approves of the redesign of the British off-roading icon. Old defender: "form follows function"
New defender: "lets put a metal square on the side for literally no reason"
The metal square is there to be able to hook on extras such as storage boxes to the side of the defender.
Aactually the metal square is meant to protect the glass when you use the ladder, its honestly a godsend when camping ⛺️

My car mad and land rover loving 4 year old son saw a picture of one of these for the first time. His immediate reaction, spoken without malice but simply with the pure innocent tactless honesty of the 4 year old that he is: "it looks like a Skoda". And he's right!

Would have liked to see them go down the G Wagon / Jimny design route, keeping it boxy like the original. This looks more like a modern Freelander.
The same with Wrangler ... I think Rivian has a better design and package than this.
Defender is an icon. This is just bland. Not sure it works ...
Modern G Wagon also don't have a little more ability than this. Jimny is still off roader, who better drives thru forest than McD drive thru.

Andrew Pryce Defenders weren’t really designed for hogging up and down the M25 at 80 mph... They were designed to be in Scotland, tearing through the mountains at 5 mph. Also, as long as it is maintained properly, they don’t need much fixing.

...and thats the point, reason that the old vehicles ruled the earth. It would be interesting to do a 10km tour with old and new see what issues arise.
Depends on what will be included in the cheapest version possible. If it will have no infotainment, no active air suspension and so on, than maybe, just maybe it won't break every 100km.

Funny how Toyota can have all the mod cons on their Land Cruiser and it never breaks down. Why would you even dream of taking anything with Land Rover on the bonnet to Ethiopia or anywhere remotely life threatening?

@@metadriveincorporated2313 now that I convert it to imperial I highly doubt it's 90cm. My truck isn't even 90 and it's a lot higher off the ground with higher exhaust and intake
@@metadriveincorporated2313 It could wade deeper, but the issue is then one of traction with the water bed - i.e. it starts to "float" a bit which becomes dangerous to control. The limitation is therefore its weight/mass/volume in water rather than where the air intakes & electronics are housed - same with all off-roading vehicles.

Yup, not a 110 not a defender. A ball of soft shite I'll warrant.
Side window profile looks a bit like the old mini estate with the weird semi suicide doors. Front grill is a bit shite. Apart from that it looks ace, love the square rear pillar panel. Interior is well executed, successfully managed to mix minimalist utilitarianism and luxury feel

I love the old defender and after thinking it through for a few months I really like the new defender. It was never going to be the same but what they came up with is a fantastic looking and modern replacement.
If it's bothering you so much that it's not the same you have three options. Buy an old defender. Buy the new Ineos Grenadier when it comes out. Or buy a Bollinger B1

Don’t get me wrong i personally love the aesthetic of it. Its the persona they missed. Defender ‘users’ want the go anywhere tech... engine, suspension sure. Beyond that nice seats and a heater better than an asthmatic hedgehog would suffice many fans with a £7k lower baseline price for the lack of mod cons.
People wanting tech and good offroad have a discovery, freelander, range rover for that. The defender needed to stay raw and this my friends just isn’t close to raw.

Was going to type a comment along the lines of this but this pretty much sums up exactly what i was thinking and what everyone else (judging by the likes on your comment) seems to know.
I saw that screenshot it and then sent it to the lads I work with so that we can prepare for trying to diagnose these cars and their inevitable CAN BUS problems

As good as the Defender was in 1975 it was pretty shit towards the end. The idea that farmers were crying when they ceased production is bullshit - they were all buying Japanese pickups long before that.
the new defender is sick as they have just bettered it by making it more luxurious and who doesn't love a bit of luxury and its now better for off road in nearly every single way an it is officially my dream car.

Where is the manual transmission option? Hopefully you will be able to buy one with very limited electronics because, let’s face it.... Land Rover has a bad history on the electronics front. Last thing I want is the stereo shorting out something important.

@@frankmagana1408 But the Mercedes-Benz G-class has not betrayed its roots, retaining the body-on-frame construction. It may have switched to independent front suspension (while retaining the straight rear axle suspension), but it still remains true to what a G-class is.
This Land Rover "Defender", has not.
@@frankmagana1408 Yea, Mercedes basically did what would call ergonomic improvements on the car but the essence is still there.
Why remake the 1970s version , it was basically the same vehicle through 7 decades. As for the G-class , it is the most pointless overpriced , high maintenance vehicle on the road , driven by absolute tools with more money than sense & the styling already looks dated like a pastiche refresh of the 40 year old original.

I haven't owned a Land Rover (Defender) for 35 years, but I'm going to buy another... Six Toyota Land Cruisers and a couple of other 4x4's have been my off road companions over the last 4 decades. I'm an agricultural contractor with 4 grandkids, 4 grandkids I like spending time with. I've tried a 110 version on a Land Rover experience day and it did everything I needed it to do off road. I might not be in JLR's target audience, but they've got a customer... I think they've built an amazing machine.

Very true, last I checked Defenders were utility vehicles, 4wd, repairable in the middle of the Amazon. All that computer nonsense is not relevant, only needs a Sat Nav and stereo, even the air suspension has to go, the body looks weak and shyt!

It looks like an updated Freelander. Land Rover have made a massive mistake cancelling the old Defender, just look at how popular the updated G Wagon is.
They canceled the original defender because sales were going down, and it was time for a new beginning. It would be almost impossible to make an updated version of original defender because they would have to jack the price so much. Getting a square body like the G Wagon to become aerodynamic was not cheap and that's why the G Wagon is so damn expensive. After all, the original Defender was supposed to be a cheaper, rugged offroad vehicle that almost anyone could get their hands on.
DaBoise they also cancelled it, because it sharp edges werent legal in the Eu anymore due to being a danger for pedestrians. So they had to close sales for the old one there and design a modern one.
The old one was failing in sales.
Honestly, I wasn't a fan of the new Defender when I first saw it. But since I've seen just how capable off road that it is and I would love to have one! I could haul my whole family around in it, seems nice on the road, but then when push comes to shove I could take it down pretty much any Mountain road near my home. Can I afford one? No. But I still want one.
Interior looks great, tech sounds fantastic. Exterior? What a shocker!

This is an amazing car; however it should've been introduced as it's own model, not the successor to the defender, which is supposed to be an old school easy to fix automobile.
Did hard Jeep guy. However I have been eyeing land rovers a lot over the years cause I’d like a second truck. Defenders and older discovery’s. I saw this release and I’m in love. Honestly it’s beautiful and would love to get my hands on one.

@@kev8943 not available in most of the world unfortunately. And also not that great. It's a stiff work truck with very little flex and expensive optional air conditioning and vinyl floors. And its loud inside and costs G wagon $
