EP 62 Solo Sailing Iceland's Western Coast

- I leave the island port off the SW coast of Iceland and proceed up the West Coast, visiting 6 ports in the majestic Western Fjords. Nothing 'dramatic' happened along this passage (good news), so I took the opportunity to demo in some detail my (imperfect) gybing and tacking procedures. I also show some aspects of using Raymarine's AIS system. (I still have much to learn before this is mastered.) Also, I show the difference between Predict Wind's 50 km GRIB presentation and the free Icelandic Met Service. Not much debate there.....

I enjoy how you make us "phantom sailors" part of your tacks, gybes, navigation. A strong sense of the sailing experience... even if my chair and laptop are not heeling as much.

Your reefing policy taught me something. FromNow on if I hear wind “might” get 25-30 + knots in 6 hours, I am reefing. Better prepare too early than too late

I agree with the reefing, That is what we do in our sailboat and also what other cruiser friends do. Unless you are racing, in changing conditions always have the boat configured for the max wind.

First of all Patrick you're never boring... we are around the same age and you're doing what I'm expecting to do someday if I can ever get my sloop out of the marina... Laff... I lived in Norway for a good number of years and worked on the Norwegian shelf for a few... I get glued to the computer screen watching you handle your boat in those seas... I understand why you don't like the 'Sock' notwithstanding I have no intention to flying my symmetric anything over 5kts... Laff... great vid and Fair Winds...

Another enjoyable video. It amazes me the detail on these wind maps. They will only get better with the development of AI.
I remember as a young pilot, that we hated computer generated forecasts, and always wanted to speak with a human forecaster....... Times change.

Looking at your top furler line, I wonder if its diameter isn’t too big and therfore it doesn’t sit deep enough in the pulley. On our boat it is thinner, not so good for the grip, but it doesn’t jump out or get tangled. I also keep it tensioned at the stern through a pulley held with an elastic bungy cord. The small diameter line is enough for the forces at play.

I'll look into the sizing of the top furler when I get home. I really know nothing about them.....(as is evidenced by my filming).
I never miss watching your adventures. I’m a small boat lake sailor with an appetite for big water sailing. Time has past leaving me too old to try but not too old to be a phantom shipmate. Many thanks

Keflavik Naval Air Station, NASKEF, was closed in 2006, but reactivated in 2015, from 2017 with the P-8aPoseidon, stationed there. I visited in 1977, with P-3b Orion, from our base at Andøya in northern Norway.
Ahh.... thanks. Im of the P3C generation. :-) i actually met an Air Force C130 crew there at a hotel where I went to dinner. They were on a stop-over to somewhere. I knew better than to ask.
I was there many times in the 90s on Nimrods.
Gosh you guys are old. But then again I was running around Europe and landing at Stavanger in my trusty Phantom about the same time, '77. 😁
Always good to see you again Sir Patrick. JFK That little vessel's performance is quite admirable Patrick. Running solo is just so much difference than having a mate. The Western fjords of Iceland are beyond any words I know.

Hi patrick . Thanks for the nice video . As always very engaging .Allow me to throw some 'old salt' lingo at ya . We always called those protective boards 'Batter boards' . I remember when I first heard the term I didn't get it because I associated the term 'Batter' with cooking .hehe . Well I figured out the real reason for the term soon enough . They are meant to take the battering so that your ship doesn't . Also the fishermen I knew that used small stabilizing sails or outriggers called them 'flopper stoppers' which is a kind of fun name. Fair winds to you .

Still shipping a bottle of chateau neuf du pape with me everywhere i sail, for the rare chance of meeting you in a port.
When I brought back my brand new bicycle from the bike shop, I lost control and slammed it to the driveway ground, causing a nasty scratch on the handlebar, and heartache. As I was about to touch up the black handlebar with a black marker to disguise the scratch, my 10 year-old nephew interjected, "no, no, a beat up bike is a respectable bike", showing wisdom beyond his tender years. Indeed I have since accumulated so many more scratches that I couldn't care less. Jenna has now acquired signs of a respectable boat! Congratulations!
Brilliant. The trick is to know when the item looks 'tested in battle', or if it just appears 'neglected'. :-)
I have to be careful not to binge watch all yr videos (I discovered this channel a week ago). While watching I noticed there is something special about you wich I recognized because I met a few people like that years ago, mainly during my navy days. And then you mentioned you were a fighter pilot! So the penny dropped 😊 : pragmatic, doesn't let emotions get in the way of things that need to be done, safety first, no drama, following procedures, aware of one's own limitations, continuesly eager to learn without being submissive, calm, good sense of humour, friendly and approachable, etc.

Hi Patrick - spectacular views and scenery, though we do not envy you the 1°C temperatures 😄As regards your harbour wall mooring, we use harbour walls in a similar way, but the trick around here is to use "Angels". These are merely heavy weights and we use two large bow shackles that each weigh about 2kg (fishing boat chandler sell them for about £5 each). Once the shore line fore and aft are in place we open a shackle and put one on the fore line and one on the aft line and then drop them over the side. This pulls the boat in (quite gently) and keeps her near the wall but she can still move off. It also stops any long lines working their way under the boat. If you want to see more detail on this, our episode in Douglas (Ep,. 249) gives a detailed account.
Having seen your running backstays in operation, I am gald we have a standard triangular sail. I will happily accept the slight loss of speed in favour of the sheer convenience of line handling. You did great but I am glad we do not have to do it.

Another great video Patrick, thank you. When I’m tacking I usually leave autopilot engaged and just press the 2 buttons simultaneously, -1 and -10 for port to give me a 90 if that makes since.
Yeah, but on Raymarine's remote controller, you have to work your way through a 3 step menu selection. I used to just press the buttons too on my NKE remote.
So pleased to see the quest for Châteauneuf-Du-Pape has been renewed..... And no surprises at the result either!

Superb stuff as always Patrick. Have to say that sailing that thing looks like a lot of effort compared to a standard Bermuda rigged cruising yacht. Can’t say I’m convinced! Fair winds my friend. 👍
Agreed, those backstays look like a pain in the a** on shorter tacks.
Last episode Patrick said he thought the most ideal boatlength was around 40 foot.

Nearly twenty years ago my wife and I were returning to our marina in about forty knots of wind and working against a current. Nasty. We would always deploy our fenders as we neared the marina, but it just wasn't safe! I now know the term is going in "hot" ... no fenders! Just happened that back then the last dock (against which the wind was blowing) was for a seaplane that wasn't in dock at that time. ALL of it's docking space was covered in tires and it was such a nice coincidence to have those waiting our return and the wind blowing us into place. One of the marina live-aboards was waiting there and caught our lines. I asked why she was out walking the docks and she replied she was making sure all her ducklings returned safely.
I have hijacked other empty pontoons/berths when the wx just wasn't going to allow me to safely/easily get to mine. No one has complained (yet). Fair winds.

Hi Patrick, thats a heafty tour your on. Im impressed. TH-cam would not let me put positions in this commentary field. But my suggestions for your Norwegian visit(As a north norwegian sailor and north norwegian citizen) is the maybe not so known as Lofoten, coast of Helgeland(the thin piece of Norway) And spesifically I have four suggestions that are all a bit off coast they are from the south - Vega -Træna -Myken and Rødøy. All of those have fine harbours. But I have to warn you, the summer is still missing here.

Great Vid, watched it whilst doing passage planning for my first solo sail... Across the Pentland Firth into Scapa Flow. Was good to see an expert at work solo tacking (must get me one of those remotes)

At 2:00, again, like Gustavo said in your earlier video, you need to keep a little tension on the furling lines, both "incoming" and "outgoing" while furling both ways (your "furling halyard line" should be tight at this point as discussed as well). Makes it a bit trickier, but prevents this little mishap from happening. Practice furling and unfurling in very light air conditions first.
Congratulations on another brilliant video. Sailing in the Denmark Strait is definitely not for the faint-hearted.
